We just ran into American-Canadian Tour competitor Ben Lynch, who is here to watch the Granite State Pro Stock Series tonight. Lynch returned to his home state of New Hampshire today after finishing 6th at Circuit Riverside Speedway in St. Croix, QC last night.

7:30

We’re now hearing that the parking lot is so full here at the track that cars have started parking all the way down the side of the road. Unfortunately, for some of those cars it’s posted “no parking” and fans are now being asked to move their vehicles to a legal parking spot.

7:27

A picture says a thousand words. There is a great crowd here at Hudson Speedway tonight with standing room only behind the grandstands. (Speed51.com Photo)

Comment From bruce

Late start on a Sunday how’s the crowd?

7:22

Comment From Twisty

Wayne Helliwell, Jr. actually got his career started at Hudson in 1991, or maybe 1992. He drove a #77 Mercury in the Strictly Stock ranks. I raced against him that day and finished ahead of him, but I’d be lucky to finish on the same lap as him anywhere now – he has turned into quite an accomplished racer. Good luck to him and all of the other competitors tonight.

7:21

The #55 of Jimmy Renfrew and #08 of Tommy O’Sullivan will both start near the front for tonight’s Hudson Hugger 100. (Speed51.com Photo)

7:17

Comment From Twisty

Nice to see Hudson Speedway in the spotlight. It is short track racing at its purest and its a place where I loved to race when I got started over 20 years ago. I don’t think it has changed much since then and that is a good thing.

We asked series president Mike Parks about having some of the higher-budget teams like DJ Shaw’s team running with the series:

“I think it’s awesome,” Parks told us.

“I think the competitors on this series are as good as anybody. Unfortunately, maybe the budget’s aren’t the same but I hope when they come to race with us we’re all on a level playing field. It gives our guys something to work towards”

DJ Shaw is not here today. Shaw won in his GSPSS debut at Star Speedway last Saturday night, but did not make the trip to Hudson today.

Mike Parks talked to us about how the GSPSS is a low-cost alternative for Pro Stock competitors:

“Our purse structure is definitely less than some of the alternatives, but I think the expenses week to week is half of some of the alternatives. We have a very strict tire rule. You’re only allowed four tires each week and you have to practice on your tires from the previous week.”

Parks estimates that it costs roughly $750 to get through the gate each week. That includes four tires, pit admission, registration, and fuel.

For those unfamiliar with the GSPSS, it is a relatively new series which was established two years ago by series president Mike Parks. Parks, who is a long time Pro Stock racer from New Hampshire. noticed a decline in Pro Stock racing in the New Hampshire area and had an idea to start his own series.

The series held one event in 2011 at Twin State Speedway to gauge the interest Pro Stock competitors would have in the series. That event ended up being the launching pad for the series, which continues to grow with every event.

Parks told Speed51.com earlier today that the support has been overwhelming and he looks forward to watching it continue to grow.
