We’d like to thank Rick Williams and all the FUPS Officials as well as Don Cretty and the Staff here at Citrus County Speedway for all their hospitality. And once again congratulations to Wayne Anderson, now 7-time winner in the 2013 FUPS Late Models and 6-time winner of the Powell Family Memorial!

And we thank you Race Fans for joining us for Trackside Now, live from the 18th Annual Powell Family Memorial… Goodnight!

11:23

To say Anderson was pleased wit the outcome would be an understatement. “I feel like I took a 5th place car and won with it tonight. Once I got out front, I just took his line away from him.” Anderson said, When asked about his performance to date in the 2013 FUPS Late Models, Anderson seemed beside himself, “Man… 6 (wins) out of 7 and a second… I just can’t even explain how tough this is to do. My wife Laurie… she’s been with me for 20 years and spotting for me for 23, and I’ve got one guy that comes to the track with me, Steve Gill, and it’s just hard to explain the amount of hard work that goes in to this.”

When asked about racing Webster for the win, Anderson went on to say, “That team has a lot to be proud of and Daniel has turned into a great racer. Every one of these FUPS races we come to I know I’m gonna be racing him for the win.”

11:14

Daniel Webster’s second place finish came in a 17 year old car that was put together by himself and his father. When asked why this race means so much, Webster explained that in the 2007 Powell Memorial, the last race on Asphalt, he led by a good margin. It was his first time leading a race, much less a race with that much prestige. On lap 115 of 125 that day, the right front hub on Webster’s car broke and he watched Wayne Anderson go on to win.

“It’s been weighing on my head since that day,” Webster exclaimed, “He (Anderson) was better than me for a lap on the restarts tonight and was able to capitalize. At the end I had to race smart or else I may not be able to come back to race again.” He added. Webster definitely felt as though he had the car to beat tonight, but said at the end the restarts just didn’t fall his way. He was happy that once again it came down to a duel between himself and the veteran Anderson.

who went to the rear? 84,69 or both?

9:45

It looks as though Neumann has broken something under this yellow and has been pushed back to the pit area. They have stopped the rest of the field to sort out the starting lineup.

9:43

Neumann held off Webster on last restart as the outside continues to be very fast here tonight. Doubling up again for the restart. There is some confusion now as Neumann has stopped on the track.

9:41

Still under yellow

9:41

51 Laps now complete.

9:41

Looks like Webster still scored as the leader under this yellow. Neumann 2nd, Anderson 3rd, Dutilly 4th and Billy Bigley rounds out top 5.

9:39

Ricky Anderson goes spinning down the backstretch bringing out the Yellow just as Neumann edged out Webster for the lead at the line.

Dutilly gets the jump out front and leads lap one. He and Neumann immediately put three car lengths on the field.

9:17

The field of 26 gets the one to go signal.

9:16

There are a few different trains of thought heading into this race. Wayne Anderson is planning on the track becoming slick around the 40 lap mark and set his car up tight for Qualifying, while Anthony Sergi is hoping the track will tighten up as the temperatures begin to drop ever so slightly.

9:14

The field takes some pace laps to bring the engines up to temperature and get some heat into the Hoosier rubber.

The history of the Powell Family Memorial race dates back to 1996 when it was held to honor members of the Powell family of Astor, Florida. The family owned and operated the Ocala Speedway (FL) for several years before six members of the family were lost in a plane crash near Gainesville, Florida on June 7, 1995.

James Powell III started the event to honor his late father and mother, his twin daughters, an aunt and uncle. To this day, the Powell Family Memorial remains one of the most treasured Memorial events throughout the southeast.  Powell himself would go on to win the race in 2003 after finishing runner-up several times.

The race has been run on both dirt and asphalt over the years. Tonight will mark the return of this race to asphalt here at Citrus County Speedway.

The first lap on the track will not count. They will time laps two and three for Qualifying.

6:02

We are ready for Qualifying with the first car set to roll.

5:59

Fans there is still plenty of time to make it out here to Citrus County Speedway on what can only be described as a Chamber of Commerce weather day, to catch some great Super Late Model action. The FUPS cars will go for 125 laps plus there is a full pit area for the other divisions in action later on as well.

When is qualifying starting?

5:54

One driver and car to keep an eye on will be Anthony Sergi. Sergi will be driving a car that they normally run at the bigger 1/2 mile tracks but clutch problems with his primary ‘short’ track car has forced them to switch to the bigger track car here at the quarter mile tonight.

5:43

The fans are staring to fill in the grandstands here in anticipation of 125 laps of FUPS Late Model action. The local Legend Cars will qualify first, followed by the FUPS Late Models. (Speed51.com Photo)

5:39

These are Super Late Model cars that will be competing with the FUPS tour tonight.

Comment From Guest

From Damien, Quebec City: I see Wayne Anderson. Are these cars, Super Late or Late Model (like LMS)? Thanks.

5:36

Patrick Staropoli, who recently took part in the PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge which will air on SPEED on August 11th, is in the field tonight and feels very confident that his #97 car can qualify well inside the 13 second mark.

5:32

Speaking with Daniel Webster he has stated that only a few drivers have broken the 13 second bracket in qualifying with Anderson having an unofficial lap at 13.98. Webster, along with a few others, are expecting the fast qualifying time to be right around a 13.6, so we will keep a close eye on the times as they get set to start.

5:25

Official word from FUPS is 26 cars will take time for tonight’s 18th Annual Powell Family Memorial 125

The only “non-Anderson” to win a FUPS race in 2013, Daniel Webster has brought what he calls “Old Faithful” out today. Webster has 1 win, 3 runner ups and 2 3rd place finishes with this car. (Speed51.com Photo)

Our records indicate that this will be the second time in history the Powell Family Memorial has been run here at Citrus County Speedway. In 2002, during construction at the Ocala Speedway (original home to this event), the Speedway owner gave his blessing for the event to be moved over to Citrus so that they could continue to honor the family without missing an event. Mike Fritts was the winner of that event here in Inverness.

4:09

Cars are off the track as the second full round of practice is complete for the Late Models. The one car everyone has been saying to watch, Anderson, did not take any laps.

4:07

Kyle Maynard has spun in a single car incident in turn two here in practice. He was able to pull away and the cars are back up to speed.

4:05

The first group on-track for this practice session include Walters, Perkins, Sergi, Bennett, Maynard, Shelnut, Zavrel, Neumann, Cataldi and Winchell

4:03

The cars are back up to speed.

4:00

After a few green flag laps, practice has been clowed. Officials are checking the track for fluid.

3:56

We are into the practice rotation as the FUPS Late Models have hit the track for the second time today.

Talking to several competitors in the Pit Area and most are saying that Wayne Anderson has the fastest car so far. Anderson, who turned only 3 laps in last night’s optional practice, comes into this race with 6 wins in the 2013 FUPS tour and has more wins in the Powell Family Memorial, 5, than any other driver.

A correction to our earlier post of Danny Maddox in the #82 car. It is actually TJ Duke behind the wheel of Maddox’s car for today.

FUPS Officials are reporting 26 cars have rolled through Tech this afternoon.

3:03

Dennis Dean, Crew Chief for Anthony Sergi, told 51 that they expect the track to tighten up a little come feature time. They are still struggling to find the right set up on the #20 car. Sergi spun his first time out but has had no other problems thus far this afternoon.

2:56

Our 51 reporters are roaming the pits as this practice session nears it’s end to get some feedback from the drivers that have been on-track so far. The weather so far is in the mid to high 80’s under sunny skies and humid. We’ll ask the drivers how this will effect their plans heading into tonight’s 125 lap main event.

2:52

85 Rick Anderson and brother 4 Randy Anderson are the lone two cars on-track.
