KIMMEL STREET STOCK QUALIFYING STORY

No Barnes, No Problem for Frank Kimmel, II

Frank Kimmel, II knows how to get the job done at Rockingham Speedway in the series that his father, the nine-time ARCA Racing Series Champion, founded.  Problem is, he just never was able to break into victory lane or even get interviewed for a pole following qualifying.  That was usually reserved for Chuck Barnes, Sr. at Rockingham in Kimmel Street Stock action.

With no Barnes in the field Friday, Kimmel was able to shine.  He set the fastest time in the Kimmel Street Stock European-style qualifying session for Saturday’s race at Rockingham.

The secret to Friday’s success?

“Chuck Barnes wasn’t here,” laughed Kimmel.  “I think he’s been on the pole all three times I’ve been here.  I’ve never been great at qualifying that one lap.  You can almost hold it wide open here.  We really only got one good lcean lap.  It’s all about that one lap in these cars.  That very first lap is very important and without Chuck being here it made it a little easier for us.”

Even though Barnes is not in attendance, Kimmel knows his work will be cut out for him if he’s going to win Saturday.

“There’s actually been some cars that haven’t been as good in the past that are really competitive this year.  We came in after practice and we thought we’d have to get our stuff together here.  We’ve been across the scales four or five times just to get our stuff right.  We had a flat last fall that ended up costing us the race.  We’re going to have to be on our game all day.”

K&N EAST QUALIFYING STORY

Faison Earns Surprise First K&N East Pole Award

Three NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races ago, 19-year-old C.J. Faison went to the hospital after a hard crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.  He was ultimately okay and released soon after arriving, but that afternoon in New Hampshire was a reflection of Faison’s entire K&N East career.

He had always been fast from the first time he ran with the series, but never had the finishes nor the luck to prove that he was a weekly contender.

But since New Hampshire, Faison’s luck is turning around.  He had an impressive seventh-place finish in the K&N East race at Dover last month and followed it up with his first 21 Means 21 Pole Award Friday afternoon at Rockingham Speedway.

Even though Faison’s turning his luck around, even he didn’t think it had turned around enough to be quickest at Rockingham.

“Our larger track program is definitely on point right now.  To come out here today and to accomplish what I’ve accopmplished coming from the season that we had last year and then leading up to about three weeks ago is pretty well spoken.  New Hampshire didn’t go like we planned.  Dover went a little better.  Finished seventh there and got some momentum rolling and evidently it transferred over to today.

“I thought we had a 15th place car (before qualifying).  I came over the radio coming down the backstretch and I said the car’s way too loose in the center of the turn.  I thought I was scrubbing way too much speed off, but apparently that was the fast way around ‘The Rock.’”

So with a bumming driver behind the wheel, what did crew chief Mark McFarland tell Faison over the radio when he shot to P1 on the board

“He didn’t even tell me.  I came in the pits and I was a little devastated at first because I knew that the qualifying run wasn’t there.  But I knew we had a great car for our race trim.  For qualifying, I didn’t’ think we had it as well as we did.  Apparently the Lord works in mysterious ways.”

Darrell Wallace, Jr. qualified on the outside pole, followed by Coleman Pressley, Corey LaJoie and Brett Moffitt.  K&N East point leader Kyle Larson will start 11th in Saturday’s 100-lap feature.

UARA QUALIFYING STORY

Dillon Bassett Bites into Swaim’s UARA Point Lead

Dillon Bassett entered Classic 3 Championship weekend at Rockingham Speedway __ points behind UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car tour point leader Travis Swaim. He took his first step towards perhaps stealing the title away from Swaim by setting fast time for Saturday’s 75-lapper in Friday’s qualifying round.

“We are not going to give up until we see the checkered flag here tomorrow,” said Bassett who cut the point lead from 71 to 66 by winning the pole. “You can never give up when you have an awesome team. They do their part and it makes it easy for me to do my job. We struggled a pit in practice that hurt us speed wise. The team changed some stuff in the last practice that helped a lot.”

This time around, Bassett’s crew chief that he shared with his brother Ronnie Bassett, Jr. this year, Chris Lawson, is battling with him on the track.

“It’s a little different,” said Bassett of racing with Lawson. “We didn’t get around him too much in practice, but come race time we’ll have a chance to run with him and it should be a lot of fun. We know we can’t go out and run 75 qualifying laps tomorrow we have to save our stuff because we only get one set. Track position is key and we are not going to fall back any further then seventh or eighth. We are going to be smart about it and not race too hard. We’ll try for the win if we can, but at the same time if we wreck this car we can’t go to Myrtle Beach.”

Three-time Pro Cup Series winner at Rockingham, Clay Rogers, was second in UARA qualifying. Blake Jones, who changed an engine after practice, qualified third. Californian Brodie Kostecki was fourth and Scott Turlington was fifth.
