The Blackwell’s were pioneers in short-track racing supporting Big Bill France in the early 50s. Funeral arrangements are pending.

7:33

The crowd is pretty good here tonight for a Blizzard series event, especially when it’s supposed to get down to 40 degrees here tonight. It would be a miracle if the stands were full since this venue has many different grandstands to accomodate the crowds of the Snowball Derby.  Promoter of the Year, Tim Bryant, has currently got his electrician hat on and is working on the track PA system.

7:33

Comment From james Promoter of the year? How big a crowd is there?

1977 Snowball Derby winner, short track veteran, and car owner of Bubba Pollard’s #18, Ronnie Sanders is here with is in Pensacola tonight. This marks his first trip to the racetrack with his Super Late Model since he spent 5 hours in surgery to remove colon cancer in March. Sanders is on a long road to recovery and we’re glad to see him back at the track.  The Bryant family here at Five Flags Speedway was so glad to hear that Sanders would be returning that they spoke to fellow racer Eddie Mercer and arranged for Sanders to have a golf cart to use for the weekend. They didn’t expect the fellow short track veteran to show up with a golf cart with Sanders red #18 paint scheme on it.

Track crews have cleared Rogers’ #11 from the racing surface and the Super Late Models will now have 5 more laps before their final round of practice is concluded.

We will just be covering the Pepsi Max 100 Blizzard Series event here tonight.  We will also be covering tomorrow night’s Miller Lite Series opener at Mobile International Speedway with both Trackside Now coverage as well as a live radio broadcast of the race on RaceTalkRadio.com.

5:30

Comment From JBODDIE44 Will you be covering any of the local races live, or just the 100 lapper

5:24

David is certainly a favorite, always has a smile on his face and a pleasant outlook.

5:24

Comment From Steve Dang! David is one of my favorites!

5:23

That is true, Junior Niedecken is in Rogers’ backup blue #11. It will be interesting to see if Rogers will step into that ride.

5:23

Comment From Steve Just an FYI Jr Niedecken is in a backup car #11 which is actually a Pro latemodel. His primary car had metal shavings in the oil pan, so he elected to run this car in order to get some points.

5:22

You could hear the thud in turn three as Rogers his the wall but he has made his way out of the car and he is OK.

5:21

David Rogers has hit the wall hard in turn three. He will not race this evening as he has suffered major damage.

5:18

Several of the stout drivers that are planning to run all five of the Friday night Blizzard Series races will also head to Mobile International Speedway on the following Saturdays for the Miller Lite Series. The two series have combined to form the Gulf Coast Championship Series which will take into account both of the series results at the end of the season to crown a champion. Most of the familiar faces from last year as well as a few new faces will make a run at the Gulf Coast title but Super Late Model veteran David Rogers has confided in us that he will not make the trip to Mobile, he is going to focus only on the Five Flags Blizzard Series.

One of the new faces we have down here in the panhandle of Florida is really not a new face at all.  Mike Garvey, who was a competitor in both the ASA National Tour as well as the USARacing Pro Cup Cup Series and was also a regular in the Cup series for a while, has teamed up with former driver and local car-owner Tracy Goodson for the Gulf Coast season this year and will make a run at the Snowball Derby in December.

Garvey ran the first Super Late Model race of the year at Gresham Motorsports Park earlier this season with Goodson.  The trip was the Georgia driver’s first venture back in a Super Late Model in six years.  For the past several years his has been around the tracks just not in the drivers seat.  Garvey has been setting up late models over the past few years and is now doing his own research and development to start building his own racecars.

Comment From J123 WHEN DOES PRACTICE END

4:53

The second round has just concluded and those times are on their way.

4:53

Correction : They have merely combined the first and second rounds of practice and the third round will be scored separately.

4:47

Track scoring officials have chosen to treat the Super Late Model practice as one session and we will have all of the times for you when it completes.

The 2009 Blizzard Series season here at Five Flags Speedway was nothing short of dominated by the “Big Three” of Augie Grill, Bubba Pollard, and Johanna Long. This year it looks like they’re going to have some competition. We’ve got a lot of familiar faces from throughout the Super Late Model ranks like Chase Elliott, Ryan Lawler, Casey Smith, Mike Garvey, Jeff Fultz, and Josh Hamner that have committed to come down to Pensacola, Florida this year and make a run at the Blizzard Series Championship.

4:39

The gates have been cleared and the second round of Blizzard Series Super Late Model practice is now underway.

4:35

The first round of practice has concluded and track crews are clearing the gates. We will have the times from that round of practice up for you as soon as they become available.

4:34

We’ve had a few more cars come in and unload here at Five Flags Speedway :

10 Danny Bagwell
92 Ron McDonald
10 Johanna Long

4:19

Legends car Pro division National Champion and Charlotte Motor Speedway Summer Shootout Pro division Champion Daniel Hemric has been spotted in the pits here at Five Flags Speedway helping veteran Jeff Fultz’s #67 team.

4:16

The Blizzard Series Super Late Models are now on the track for their first round of practice.

4:13

Notes from the driver’s meeting :Track owner/promoter Tim Bryant has increased the bottom of the purse this season. Blizzard Series events will now pay $400 to start instead of the past $200.

Qualifying is scheduled to start at 6:45 pm CT but may be pushed back due to the position of the sun in turn three this evening.

Head tech man Ricky Brooks has announced that there will now be no penalty for an infraction in pre-qualifying tech. However, Brooks did strong word his warning to the drivers that if that was abused the punishment would return for the next race.

Many drivers and fan alike remember that after the Snowball Derby there were no burnouts our donuts allowed. Ricky Brooks has stood by that rule and once again said that won’t be happening out here tonight until after the cars have cleared tech.
