Kopec has had an interesting VMRS opening weekend. He blew an engine in practice Friday. A sponsor, Cliff Nelson, helped arrange a backup Bob Bruneau engine for Kopec to use the remainder of the weekend. Kopec borrowed headers for the 18-degree engine from fellow competitor Max Zachem.

In his heat, Kopec lined up in the wrong position and started ninth instead of his scheduled seventh. “He can’t count,” joked Chris Kopec, Dylan’s dad and longtime Modified campaigner. With six cars transferring from the heat, Kopec was behind the eight-ball and couldn’t get into a transfer spot in 12 laps. He was able to make the main event through the consi and will look to go to the front later today.

Max Zachem said he has been signing used tire sidewalls for the past few years and kids really enjoy getting one at pit parties like today.

“Our local dump doesn’t let us throw tires away and I was just cutting them up anyway, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ said Zachem. “I know how much kids like stuff like this. I was a kid once…I guess I still am.”

Zachem also said that here at Waterford, his home track, he “finally” had a good car in practice and qualifying yesterday. He plans to run full-time on the VMRS and the Tri-Track Modified Series. He is also the tire specialist on Justin Bonsignore’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour team, but hopes to make a couple NWMT starts if he can this season.
