The excitement of TBRA Late Models returns in one of the most anticipated template-bodied Super Late Model events north of the Mason-Dixon line is building.  “The Piney V,” September 7th and 8th at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton, PA, will be the fifth-annual running of the Piney Lasky Memorial.  The local favorites and TBRA regulars such as 2011 Piney Lasky winner Jimmy Carter and current TBRA point leader George Skora III will try to defend Motordrome against notable invaders such as 2010 Piney Lasky winner and Texan-turned-North Carolinian Colt James and others.  Also in action at Motordrome on “The Piney V” night will be the Super Cup Stock Car Series and the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program.  Motordrome Speedway is located in Smithton, PA, 20 minutes south of downtown Pittsburgh.  For more information on “The Piney V,” visit www.motordromespeedway.com

Five Flags Speedway Tech Director Ricky Brooks announced in today’s driver’s meeting that there would be a mandatory lead inspection on Thursday of Snowball Derby week this year. Officials have seen an increased number of cautions due to lead falling from cars in recent months and fear the possibility of injury caused by someone making contact with the debris. All cars are to have their numbers painted on the lead blocks, not just written on.

DJ VanderLey says he and his father Dan VanderLey have chosen to focus on their Super Late Model program and that is why he isn’t here with his PLM this evening. VanderLey is wrenching on the No. 18 car of Hunter Robbins, who is VanderLey’s roommate at Auburn University. VanderLey is currently second in Pro Late Model points just 36 markers out of the lead.

Super Late Models from throughout North America will battle on the fast Speedway 660 surface on Sunday, September 2nd for one of the richest Super Late Model events anywhere – the Auto Value 250.  It’s more than just a SLM event in Fredrickton, New Brunswick…it’s a can’t-miss event for any short trackers from the U.S. or Canada.  $15,000 is on the line to the winner and several drivers from the top Super Late Model series in the States will be trying to leave Canada with the big payday, but they’ll have to go through the local racers to do it.  For more information on the September 2nd event at Speedway 660, visitwww.speedway660.com.

Driver’s Meeting Notes:

As has become the pattern here in the Deep South, drivers who run both legs of this weekend’s double header between here at Five Flags Speedway and South Alabama Speedway tomorrow night will be entered into a drawing for a free set of tires to be awarded at the driver’s meeting before tomorrow’s Viper Series event.

Track owner and promoter Tim Bryant apologized to crews for the soggy condition of the grounds here at Five Flags Speedway citing the recent rains as the culprit.

In qualifying, Pro Late Models will receive the green flag to being their timed run the first time they cross the start-finish line after exiting the pits.

Local division Sportsman and Bombers will have six-lap heat races tonight (two per division). They are the only two other divisions running in addition to the Pro Late Models tonight.

Due to the summer heat here on the Gulf Coast, driver’s will not be required to strap into their vehicles until just before firing engines. Driver introductions will be out-of-car.

On the initial start, the leader starts the race at the second start line off of turn four. All other restarts will be started in the restart box off turn four by the leader.

Cautions will not count as we will run 100 laps under green tonight. When the caution falls, they will not race back to the caution but the field will be frozen instead.

If there is a caution on the first lap, the field will be completely reset except for drivers who may need assistance.

All restarts will be double filed and the field will double up one lap before the drop of the green flag.

Under red flag conditions, anyone coming to pit road will be penalized by going to the tail of the field.

After the white flag waves, the next flag will either be red or checkers.  If red, there will be a green, white, checkered finish.

Tech Director Ricky Brooks reminded teams that to change a tire during this 100-lap event, the tire must be on the wheel, sparking and seen by an official before a change can be made. Only scuffed tires may be put on as replacement. Teams making any other changes will incur a five-lap penalty.

Teams were warned stopping on track to cause a caution, which has been a growing concern on the Gulf Coast this season, will be met with a severe penalty.

Teams were also warned to watch their speed on pit road.
