Chase Elliott on being the first driver to complete the unofficial “Grand Slam” with wins in the four major Super Late Model races.

“The bad thing was is I was so close here back in 2010.  I had a really good race with TJ (Reaid) and just came up a little bit short.  To come back and get the job done means a ton to me and my family.  We put so much effort into this and it’s great for it to pay off. “

12:15

“I guess it wasn’t meant to be.  We just had too many problems this year,” said Pollard about his late-race bad luck.  We’ll have more from Pollard shortly.

CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
Daniel Hemric has been declared the Southern Super Series Champion by one point over Bubba Pollard by series officials

11:45

In the final laps, Eddie Hoffman came back on the track after being in the same wreck as Pollard.  Hoffman made a few more laps, which jumped him over Pollard in the finishing order.  That could have helped settle the title.

11:44

By our unofficial calculations, Hemric is the champion by one point.  That is highly unofficial as we await official confirmation.

11:43

Chase Elliott emerges from his car. (Speed51.com Photo)

11:43

Officials are crunching the numbers.  It’s too close of a championship to call.

11:41

Hemric was second and Pollard was 20th.  We are checking with officials to determine the champion.

11:40

CHECKERED FLAG: Chase Elliott wins the 29th Annual All American 400 over Daniel Hemric and Hunter Robbins.

11:40

WHITE FLAG for Chase Elliott.

11:40

Lap 298: Two to go for Elliott.  It’s 1.4 seconds

11:39

Lap 297:  Three to go.  It’s 1.125 seconds from Elliott to Hemric.

11:39

Lap 295: High five from the flag man, five laps to go for Elliott.

11:38

Lap 294, six to go for Elliott.  The lead is 1.450 seconds.

11:38

Lap 293:  Hemric takes second from Robbins and sets his sights on Elliott.  He’s 1.5 seconds behind.

11:37

Lap 292:  Finley loses seventh to Peltier

11:37

Lap 290: 10 to go for Elliott.  Robbins is four car lengths ahead of Hemric in second.

11:37

Lap 289: Elliott leads Robbins by .942 seconds.

11:36

With Pollard scored 19th, if Hemric wins the race, unofficially Hemric would be the champion.

11:36

Lap 287:  Hemric inside VanDoorn for third.  He’s got the spot.

11:36

Lap 285, 15 to go:  Hemric takes fourth from Grill.  Now he wants VanDoorn’s third spot.

11:35

11:29

This, of course, is a huge swing for the championship.  Pollard needed to finish 18th or better to clinch the championship.  It appears that he won’t be in the top 18 of this race, so it’ll depend on how Hemric does in the final 17 laps to determine who will win the inaugural Southern Super Series championship

11:05

Per Southern Super Series rules, Johnny VanDoorn will get his spot back as the leader.  The cause of the caution was the spun car of Finley, not the Grill and VanDoorn contact.

11:04

The hood is bowed up on Grill’s car, but is shown in the lead for the time being.

11:03

YELLOW FLAG Lap 257:  Trey Mitchell goes around in turn two.  As VanDoorn and Grill approached the spun car, VanDoorn was spun with some contact with Grill.

11:03

Lap 257:  Elliott gets by Kenseth for fourth.

10:58

Lap 244:  Robbins has gotten to the inside of Kenseth for fourth and wants more.  He’s even pressuring Hemric for third.

10:57

Lap 241:  Kenseth looked under Hemric in turn two for third, but he got a little sideways and allowed Hemric to hold the spot.

Lonnie Sommerville- Two Time Auto Value 250 Winner, Atlantic Cat 250 Winner, and so much more. Maybe he’ll add the AA 400 to his win.

6:24

Garrett Campbell was disappointed with not making the show. He found a way to smile and said he hopes they can make the Myrtle Beach as this race cost them a lot to come and run. Campbell normally runs Late Model Stocks.

Comment From Guest

Great to see a shoestring budget team like Meyer’s get a chance to start in the All American. Joey must be elated.

6:22

There was big relief in the Lonnie Sommerville when they found out they are in the race. This will be his first All American 400.

6:19

Lonnie Sommerville and Joseph Meyer will receve the Promoters Option starting spots.

6:18

6:16

Officials are currently conferring to determine the two Promoters Options.

6:16

We’ve confirmed that both Trey Mitchell and Jordan Sims will take four sticker tires to start tonight’s 300-lapper.  That will leave just two new tires and two 20-lap scuffs in their pit for the race.  Tyler Speer, who finished third, is discussing what their best option will be, whether to take their four stickers now or to keep them in the pit for the race and start on their 20-lap scuffs.

6:12

Next on track will be the feature racing opening ceremonies, including the Southern Super Series Pole Award presentation.  Then, we’ll go green with the 100-lap Pro Late Model event, followed by the 300-lap Southern Super Series main event.

6:08

WHITE FLAG Lap 19: The top three spots are fairly secure barring anything unexpected.

6:07

Lap 17: Trey Mitchell leads by six car lengths on Sims. Speer has opened up a bit of a gap on Campbell for the final transfer spot.

6:07

Lap 15, five to go: Campbell rides on the back bumper of Speer for the final transfer spot. Sommerville rides four car lengths behind Campbell in fifth.

6:06

GREEN FLAG: Trey Mitchell gets away in turn one and SIms follows in second. Tyler Speer, who spun earlier in the race, now runs third with Campbell knocking on the door.

6:06

One lap to green. Half of the six cars remaining on the track will make tonight’s All American 400. Mitchell will lead Sims, Speer, Campbell, Audie and Sommerville.

6:05

As Sommerville came back down pit road from his pit stop, another team’s crew member, likely one from Oliver’s crew, came out to show his displeasure as Sommerville drove by.

YELLOW FLAG Lap 13: Contact for the third spot as Oliver and Sommerville tangle. Oliver took a hard hit on the inside wall. Sommerville continued on, but will be penalized to the rear of the field.

5:59

Lap 11: The transfer spot is in debate as Oliver has it, but Sommerville wants it with 9 laps to go.

5:58

Lap 10: Mitchell now leads Sims by three car lengths. It’s the same gap back to Chase Oliver in third. His rear view mirror is full of Lonnie Sommerville.

5:58

GREEN FLAG: Mitchell, who restarted second due to reverting back to the most previous completed lap, gets a good start on the outside to take the lead.

5:57

Campbell got caught up to the rear of the field. It appears that he did not make any contact with the wall and he did not go to pit road under the caution. He’ll restart at the tail, but that’s just back in seventh.

5:56

YELLOW FLAG Lap 9: Chase Oliver and Garrett Campbell get together off turn four, causing Campbell to spin.

5:55

Lap 7: Sommerville uses the inside groove to get by Campbell for third.

5:55

GREEN FLAG: Sims gets away, leaving Mitchell and Campbell to duel for second.

5:54

The scene is cleaned up and we’re ready to go back to green.  Now seven cars remain on track, with Sims leading Mitchell, Campbell, Sommerville, Oliver, Speer and Audie

YELLOW FLAG Lap 6: Artuso goes around with some contact.

5:49

GREEN FLAG: Another dead heat into turn one but there’s a wreck behind the leaders.

5:48

The track is clear and we’re ready to go back to green

5:48

YELLOW FLAG Lap 6: Just as Mitchell got the lead on the high side off turn two, the yellow flag came out for debris in turn one.  The debris appears to be the right-front fender off the already-damaged Tyler Audie car.

5:47

GREEN FLAG: Sims and Mitchell drag race to turn one.  Mitchell hangs tough and they’re door to door off turn two.

5:46

One lap to green

5:46

As they run under yellow:
1.  Jordan Sims
2.  Trey Mitchell
3.  Garrett Campbell
4.  Lonnie Sommerville
5.  Jerry Artuso
6.  Chase Oliver
7.  Tyler Audie
8.  Tyler Speer

5:45

YELLOW FLAG Lap 6: Tyler Speer spins off turn two all by himself.

5:45

Lap 6: Mitchell clears Campbell into turn one.

5:45

Lap 5:  Sims leads by two car lengths on Garrett Campbell, but Trey Mitchell wants that second spot.

5:44

Lap 3:  Trey Mitchell takes the third and final transfer spot for the time being with a pass of Lonnie Sommerville.

5:44

GREEN FLAG: Sims again gets a good start.  Garrett Campbell settles in second with Sommerville third.

5:44

All the cars in the incident, minus Meyer, continued on.

Still one lap complete in this 20-lap Last Chance Race.

5:40

YELLOW FLAG into turn one without another lap on the board.  Oliver tried to get out of the oil-dry and came down across the nose of another car.  Oliver spun and a few other cars, Jerry Artuso and Joseph Meyer, spun in the aftermath.

5:39

GREEN FLAG: Sims gets away as Oliver doesn’t get up to speed on the outside lane.

5:38

One lap to green.

5:37

Tyler Audie, without a hood, fender and door on the left side, returns to the track.

5:36

The cleanup crew is still addressing the dropped fluids on the front stretch as the cars pick up the pace behind the pace car to work in the oil-dry.

5:34

When we restart with one of 20 laps complete, here is how they will go to green in this 20-lap Last Chance Race.

1.  Jordan Sims
2.  Dillon Oliver
3.  Garrett Campbell
4.  Lonnie Sommerville
5.  Trey Mitchell
6.  Jerry Artuso
7.  Joseph Meyer
8.  Tyler Speer
9.  Tyler Audie (on pit road currently)

5:32

Eight cars remain on track, but a ninth, Tyler Audie even with all his damage, is attempting to join them.

5:31

Back under YELLOW FLAG conditions now that the track is just about race-ready.

5:13

The Hermiller team is saying the front stretch had oil from the 09 car.

5:11

Hermiller was blaming the transmission for his bad day that just got worse.

5:10

Reports from track crews is that the 09 of Bolden may have dropped some fluid that caused the stack up in turn one.

5:10

Both drivers are out and walking around.

5:09

RED FLAG for cleanup.

5:08

Hermiller’s car caught some air and landed on top of Audie’s No. 22.

5:08

YELLOW FLAG Lap 1: In turn one, Brandon Hermiller, Joe Ross and Tyler Audie tangled.

5:07

The field stacked up behind Bolden, but all cars got through the melee.

5:07

GREEN FLAG: Sims gets away at the start, but Bolden on the outside of the front row fails to come up to speed.

5:06

One lap to green in the Last Chance Race.

5:05

The track promoter, Tony Formosa, can add two drivers to the field at his discretion following the last chance race.  Two drivers who do not transfer can receive a starting spot at the tail of the field as decided by the promoter.

Sterling Marlin stated, “The car isn’t quite right from yesterday’s crash, at least for qualifying. But we’ll be ok in the race. We know what we have to do to win this thing.” If the two-time Daytona 500 Winner hangs on to clinch the title, he will tie his father, Coo Coo Marlin for all-Time track championships at four.

The Last Chance Race is tentatively scheduled for 5pm, in roughly one hour.

3:55

Drivers in the last chance race must start that race on the tires that they qualified on.  The three drivers that transfer into the feature have the option to start the 300-lap feature on new tires that can be purchased after the Last Chance.  If they start the race on four new tires, then they will only have two new tires in their pit stall for the remainder of the race, plus the scuffed tires that they originally qualified on.

If a driver who transfers chooses to start the race on their qualifying/Last Chance Race tires, then they will still have their allotment of six new tires in their pit stall at the start of the race.

Mark Kraus was actually surprised to make it by time. After his run, he went and sat in his motorhome thinking he had to run the last chance race. He came back out and his crew told him and was in shock. He is happy to be in the show. The last time Kraus was in this race was 2008 with his car owner Don Fanetti who passed away a few years ago. Kraus recalled he qualified 16th back in 2008. His crew chief this weekend is Toby Nuttleman. Krause and Nuttleman have been working together with the Decker racing team this year. But they rarely worked in he driver/crew chief roll. Recently Paige, Claire and Natalie Decker participated in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program.

3:51

Allen Karnes, by being the only driver in the top 20 of Southern Super Series points not to lock in on time, will get the only SSS provisional.  That means there are three drivers that will transfer into the event from the 20-lap Last Chance Race later this afternoon.

The mood up and down pit road is consistent amongst all of the teams; Jovial, but know the job at hand. Especially for those that were towards the lower half of the Practice charts.

Super Late Model tech is clear as there are no drivers receiving any sort of penalties. All 43 cars will get their allotted two laps of Qualifying. 8 Mark Day and 17 Bobby Wingo have officially withdrawn from the Super Late Models portion of today’s events. Day is however still competing in the Pro Late Models events later.

We’ve spoken with a few race fans around the track already today and a few have relayed a note that if other fans are en route to the track today, they should get here early.  There are a few slowdowns on Interstates 40 and 65 in the Nashville area this afternoon that are backing up traffic.  Therefore, if you haven’t left for the track yet, you may want to start heading out soon.

Just as about three quarters of the Super Late Model field had run through pre-qualifying tech, the skies opened up for a brief shower.  Looking at the radar, there is only one small blip of rain that is pushing through the area quickly.  Behind it, it’s nothing but clear skies.  In fact, looking on the horizon in turns three and four, the sun is out and skies are blue.  Come qualifying and race time later on, the weather should be perfect.

Due to the Drivers Meeting running a little long, Super Late Models Practice will start in about 10 minutes as the Drivers have rushed back to their trailers to put on their Drivers Suits and gather the necessary safety equipment.

9:32

The Drivers Meeting has let out. The Pro Late Models teams have been kept for a few more procedural explanations.

9:31

Five Flags Speedway General Manager and Snowball Derby promoter announced in the drivers meeting that the 2014 Southern Super Series schedule is currently in the works and they are working with CRA and other series to avoid conflicting dates.

Comment From Guest

Good luck to SSS drivers Bubba Pollard and Dan Hemric….time to settle the championship.

9:21

If there are 100 consecutive green flag laps, there will be a competition caution. There will not be a competition yellow inside of the final 20 laps. This is a rule enacted in last year’s Snowball Derby and at this year’s World Crown 300. There are no scheduled breaks in this event.

9:18

The leader can choose to restart on the inside or outside. From third on back, odd positions restart on the inside groove, even positions on the outside.

9:18

There will be a free pass given in every yellow to the first car a lap down. Lead lap cars will start ahead of lap-down cars on restarts.

9:15

The pit road speed, 30mph, will be enforced by radar guns.

9:15

Drivers can pull up to pit as they get to the start-finish line once behind the pace car under yellow. The first lap by, the pits will be open for lead-lap cars. The next time, pits are open for everyone.

9:14

70+ drivers between Super Late Models and Pro Late Models tasks listen in on the Drivers Meeting. (Speed51.com Photo)

9:14

Caution laps will count in the 300-lap feature.

9:12

36 cars will start the Southern Super Series feature.

9:12

The fastest 30 times lock into the race. Then there are two Southern Super Series provisionals open to drivers in the top 20 in points. Then there will be two from the 20-lap last chance race. If there are no drivers in the top 20 in SSS points that do not lock into the field, then another driver may transfer from the last chance race.

9:10

The drivers will get a “dead lap” in qualifying. The first time by the flag stand, a driver will get the one to go signal.

9:09

Southern Super Series race director Dan Spence will hold that same position for this event. CRA is handling the timing and scoring as well as their lead tech official Eddie Chew overseeing tech
