The only other driver with a mathematical shot at the Inaugural Southern Super Series Championship is Daniel Hemric, the 2012 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Champion. Hemric finished practice practice sixth overall.

“We had a good day today,” said Hemric. “We were able to make a mock run there at the end. We’ve got some work to do, but we’ll be there.”

As for his title chances, Hemric was hopeful.

“We can’t control what Bubba does, all we can do is control what we do and if things work out, we’ll be grateful. No matter what, it’s been a great year for Carswell Motorsports.”

Current Southern Super Series Points Leader Bubba Pollard didn’t hit the track today until after the lunch break. Even with not as much track time as others, the Senoia, Georgia driver was satisfied with his day.

“The car was decent, but this tire we’re on is so hard you just have to make the best of it,” said Pollard. “We’re all on the same stuff.”

As for any added pressure on what’s at stake tomorrow in terms of winning the inaugural SSS Championship, Pollard just smiled.

“We just keep doing what we’ve been doing all year long and we’ll put ourselves in good position. We just need to make sure nothing mechanical fails on us and the title will take care of itself.”

Preston Peltier turned in the fastest of the day in Practice for tomorrow’s All-American 400 and was very happy overall with the entire day.

“We didn’t expect to be the fastest car here today, but we’ll take it especially after last two weekends,” the Californian-turned-North Carolinan stated. “We made some changes after Winchester and New Smyrna the last two weekends. We didn’t do too well at either place, and now the car is back to where it needs to be. We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”

Earlier today, Speed51.com had a chance to follow-up with Johnny VanDoorn and Stephen Nasse after their altercation last Saturday night at the Governor’s Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway. The two cars made contact while battling for the lead going into turn one causing Nasse to spin and make heavy contact with the wall. This caused an altercation with the crews in the pits. VanDoorn later retired from the race as well.

Both said that they had a conversation after the race last Saturday night.

“Everything is good, we talked after the race, VanDoorn said. “He (Nasse) was pretty civil about it. He came down and wanted to know my take on things. When it was all said and done, I think he understood where I was coming from. We shook hands and told him we have to move forward and race each other down the road. We don’t need to be stupid about things. He understood where I come from and I seen his point of view. I understand he is upset cause he ended up with a wrecked racecar. I think we will be fine and just run the 400 and go from there.”

Nasse gave us his thoughts.

“Obviously he knows what he did wasn’t right there and like he said we have a wrecked race car,” Nasse said. “That is the whole point as that is a lot of money coming out of our pockets to fix somebody else’s mistake. But there is no reason to go into this race and be dumb about it. Obviously we are going to race hard and not race dumb to go out and flat out wreck him. But there is not going to be much give and take, but I am going to save my equipment and go and try to win this race here. You can’t hold grudges for too long or we will both end up with a wrecked racecar and I will have two wrecked racecars in the stable and that is something we definitely don’t want. That will cost a lot more money on us. I will race smart but I will also race hard and be smart about it to get my car to the end to victory lane like it should have been at New Smyrna.”

In the morning practice, Van Doorn was third quick with a time of 19.203 and Nasse was 15th with a 19.492.

But turns three and four are fine. Spencer Davis told us that he is going to wait a little bit because the weepers are in his racing line.

Jordan Sims team had an interesting trip bringing the hauler down from Canada. The truck pulling the hauler broke down three miles from the track. They were able to get truck and hauler towed to the track and the track helped get his hauler to his pit stall. The brand new truck is at the nearby dealership to get repaired by tonight or tomorrow for the trip back north. Sims will be heading back to North Carolina to complete his Fall internship in corporate sales for Speedway Motorsports at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

It’s a picture-perfect weekend weather-wise for such a prestigious event.  Skies are mostly clear with puffy, white clouds overhead.  It’s currently in the high 50’s and will climb to about 70 degrees later on today before dipping back into the 50’s tonight.

Tomorrow’s weather for the All American 400 feature day looks wonderful, as well.  The forecast is calling for mostly sunny conditions with a temperature of 62 degrees come feature racing time tomorrow afternoon.
