7:28

SK qualifying is underway.  Matt Hirschman will be the first car on the track.

7:27

Burt Myers was just interviewed by the track announcer about his Vintage Modified heat race crash.

"It was definitely one of the hardest hits I've ever taken," said Myers.  "The good Lord was looking out for me because it could've been a lot worse."

7:25

Next up will be SK Modified time trials.

7:24

USA Modified Qualifying is now complete.  Brad Springer has set fast time with a lap of 16.722, followed by Chad Poole, Mike Stacy, Brian Nester and Ross Klingelhofer.  Those drivers are locked into tomorrow's 50-lap feature, while the rest of the field will be set through heat races later tonight.

7:15

About halfway through USA Modified qualifying, series champioin Brad Springer of Hudson, OH is fast timer.  Chad Poole is second, followed by Brian Nester, Scott Tomasik and Ross Klingelhofer.

7:04

We won't be able to provide live coverage of the USA Modifieds time trials, but we will for the SK Modifieds, Tour Mods and SLMs.  We will have USA Modified qualifying results after this session.

7:03

Actually, the USA Modifieds will be first to time trials.

7:02

The SK Modifieds will be time trialing next, followed by the Tour Mods and the CRA Super Modifieds.

7:01

All of tonight's heat races have been cut from 20 laps to 10 due to the time constraints from the rain delays.

6:58

Johnny Sutton has won the Vintage Modified heat over Jim Lambert.  Burt Myers, despite crashing with a lap and a half to go, will be credited with third.  The final car on track, Bill Moffett will be scored fourth.

6:53

It appears that the entire wheel assembly broke off at the hub.  Word is Burt Myers is okay, and he is indeed climbing out of that car.

6:53

YELLOW FLAG:  Coming to the white flag, leader Burt Myers lost a left-rear tire and slammed the turn-three wall.

6:52

The eight-lap, four car heat race is underway.  Burt Myers leads Johnny Sutton with the other two cars, Jim Lambert and Bill Moffett, well off the pace.

6:47

Burt Myers will also be competing in the Vintage Modified division, pulling triple-duty between that, his #1 Tour-Type Modified and the Ricky Knapp-owned #1 SK Modified.

6:46

John Betts' #0 will be driven this weekend by NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver Johnny Sutton.

6:46

The Vinatage Modifieds are rolling out for their heat race.

6:44

While we still see some drops in the horizon, a Vintage Modified is taking to the track to see how damp the track is and to see if we can continue qualifying at this point.

6:39

Still sprinkling, still trying to dry the track.

6:31

For a while now, the Concord Speedway facility has been up for sale, but not a very highly-promoted sale.  Well, now we're hearing that there is a potential buyer that has entered into a preliminary agreement for the purchase of the track.

We have heard that NASCAR team owner Jack Roush will be the new buyer for the track, but both Roush and the current owners have a date of January 1st for cancelling the agreement or continuing on with the purchase.  We have heard estimates of the purchase price for the entire facility in the 6 million dollar range.

6:24

The SK Modifieds sit under tarps as the rain falls before their qualifying session.

6:17

It is sprinkling once again.

6:16

Willie Wall has won the 8-lap Vintage Sportsman heat over Jeff Melton, Marty Sprittle, Jerry White and Brian Helms.

6:07

The vintage Sportsman and Modifieds will take their heats first before time trails for the remainder of the divisions.  The Vintage Sportsman will line up first.

6:03

The SK Modifieds are lined up on pit road and the flagman is up on the stand ready to go.  We're just a few moments away from qualifying kicking off.

5:53

David Johnson also has been penalized a lap in qualifying per CRA officials.

5:51

Michael Pilla has been also docked one lap in CRA qualifying due to not completing fixes on items found in pre-practice tech before pre-qualifying tech.

5:48

Cars have been called to the staging area. The track is still a tad damp in turn three, but we're closer to putting racecars on the track.

5:45

Track drying efforts are still taking place. The track is still somewhat damp, so it'll still be a while.

5:37

Fat Boy Shootout podium finishers L-R: 2nd Matthew Dillner, winner Mike Stacy, 3rd place and event organizer David Sell. (51 Photo)

5:34

While we have a slight break in the on-track action, we must recap last night's kickoff to the North-South Shootout weekend.

Speed51.com's Matt "Duke" Kentfield and Matthew Dillner of SpeedEats.com competed in the Third Annual Fat Boy Shootout at Victory Lane Indoor Karting in Charlotte, NC. A field of 12 dudes weighing 245 pounds or more ran a 30-minute endurance race. Dillner led the way for the duo, finishing second to USA Modified driver Mike Stacy, while Duke was fifth.

Post-race, both Dillner and Kentfield protested Stacy's weight, and on the scales, Stacy was 244.6 pounds, which most in the crowd felt meant a disqualification. Stacy stood on the scales a total of five times before hitting the 245 pound mark, giving him the official win marred with controversy.

5:27

The rain has stopped here at Concord and the sun is shining brightly over the backstretch. Tow trucks are dragging tires to get the racing surface dried for qualifying.

5:27

A report from our roving pit reporter, SpeedEats.com Matthew Dillner:

A few drivers in the drivers meeting that will remain un-named were scratching their heads at Junior Miller's arrival at the North South Shootout.

When asked about what he thought about Miller showing up, arch rival Jason Myers responded, "Don't give him that much credit yet. All he's done is shown up."

5:23

As we reported earlier,Jimmy Blewett tried a new shock package in practice. That package was somewhat short-lived.

"We didn't have much time to work on it. So we went back to our other shock package."

5:22

Word from CRA offiicals is that former Concord Speedway Big 10 Super Late Model standout Dennis Schoenfeld will receive just one qualifying lap due to issues in tech. There was a list of things that the team had to correct after the #43 went through practice tech before going through qualifying tech, but not all of those items were corrected.

5:13

Another rain shower has fallen upon Concord Speedway.  This is perhaps the strongest shower we've had so far today.  The sun is still out in three sides of the track's horizon, but the rain is still coming down here at the track.

4:50

Today's CRA qualifying procedure will consist of one warmup lap and two consecutive laps for qualifying. Once a driver takes the green flag, that is their only attempt to time in. Qualifying will determine spots 1-10. All remaining cars will be staggered in two 20-lap qualifying heat races where the top-five finishers from each heat will fill feature starting spots 11-20. The last chance race results will determine starting spots 21 and 22. Spots 23-25 will be filled by CRA points, spot 26 will be a promoter's option (if not needed, they will be filled by the next finishing car in the last-chance race). If it is determined in advance that all cars will start the feature and no last chance race is needed, then starting spots 21-25 will be provisionals, 25-26 will be promoter's options and remaining cars will be additional starters (minus $800 to start).

4:43

Ted Christopher may have never won a North-South Shootout, but he has won a Modified race here at Concord before. He won the 2009 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season-opener here, passing Burt Myers on the opening lap and led wire-to-wire. (5

4:38

USA Modified practice has now concluded. Earl paules is back on track to shake down his #8 Modified after an earlier on-track problem.

4:35

John Betts' bad-a** looking Vintage Modified. Many Northeastern Modified fans recognize Betts' name as a longtime engine builder for some of the most successful Modifieds of all-time through his old business, McBetts Racing Engines.

4:33

After a brief shower and some pace-speed laps by the USA Modifieds, the track is back to full-speed action with the USA Mods.

Junior Miller and his crew change carburetors. (51 Photo)

4:33

Just a little bit ago, we caught up with Bowman Gray Stadium legend Junior Miller.  Miller reported to us that he was having a carburetor flutter problem when he drove his #69 Tour-Type Modified through the first turn earlier in practice.  So, he went to his fellow BGS standout Frank Fleming's pit area and borrowed another carburetor to use for the remainder of the weekend.

4:07

CRA practice has concluded just as a light sprinkle has fallen upon Concord Speedway. The sun is out on the horizon, so we expect a brief delay at the longest.

Vintage Modifieds are up next for practice.

2:29

Earl Paules hit the wall hard in the dog-leg during Modieid practice. His #8 had to get double-hooked to the pit area. Paules Is ok but the car isn't.

"We hit real hard," said Paules. "The left rear went. The crew said it was all the way down when I was spinning. I tried to keep 'er lit as long as I could".

It has been sunny most of the day, however an overcast has moved in and the speeds are begining to pick up.

2:21

The track is alive with action right now. Twenty Tour Modifieds are blazing around the speedway.

2:13

Earl Pauls Jr. after getting into the wall. His car had some smoke before the contact as well. (51 Photo)

2:10

Corey "Supershoe" Lajoie is back behind the wheel of a Mod again. His only mod start, at the 1/4 mile at Atlanta this spring, produced a win for the young third-generation driver.

So we asked if he was at all worried about the potential of ruining his win percentage (100-percent) if he wasn't able to pull off a victory this weekend. ".500 wouldn't be bad though," laughed Lajoie. "We're going to try real hard to make it two-for-two though."

2:08

Earl Paules Jr. has just made hard contact with the wall in turn two. The red flag is coming out for clean up.

2:00

Tour Modifieds are rolling onto the track for the second round of practice. Justin Bonsignore is the first car out.

1:51

Looking at the time sheet from the first Tour Modified Practice I think it’s safe to say the northern boys are really looking to take the trophy back across the Mason Dixon line this year. Burt Myers has won this event each of the last two years and each have been the only time the Southern drivers have won this event over the Northern boys.

1:50

We have a small break here at Concord as we get set to go for our second round of practice.

1:34

We are still working the USA Modifed practice and then we will have a second round for all the cars here today.

1:32

Looking down the entry we see Maryeve Dufault who hails from Sorel, Quebec. She is part of the FAZZT development program (IndyCar).

1:26

Ross Kenseth (CRA Super Late Models) is making his first laps at the tricky Concord track.
"Its rough," admitted Kenseth. "I've never seen anything like it. I only got a few good laps in because the track was real dirty. I'm getting through turn one and there (the dogleg) well. Getting through the final turn and off that corner and onto the frontstretch is the most important part of the track."

1:12

The USA Modifieds are out on the track. Everything has been smooth except for the 39 of Dave Christensien who made some contact with the turn 4 wall. We are now back to green.

12:37

CRA officials are now saying thier is oil on the track.

12:36

Randy Gentry has pulled into the pits, thier was smoke under the hood.

12:33

Comment From Guest

At the North Wilkesboro race, Junior Miller wore penny loafers while racing. Good to see him running the North South Shootout this year!

12:32

Thier has been an addition to the Super Late Model field. Michael Pilla out of Midland, NC will be the 27th car.

12:27

Its no shock that Jimmy Blewett is attracting attention at the North South Shootout. This time, the driver known as "Showtime," is doing it with what he's bolting on his #76 Modified. He's trying a new gas-shock from Pro Shocks.

It's the First time Pro's gone to gas power shock. Asphalt Mods are usually good on twin-tube shocks. Jimmie wants to try the difference between the twin-tube traditional shock and the mono-tube gas shock.

"Why not? I'm not scared," says Showtime. "We only got two-laps in practice because we had broken spark plugs. I want to see what these shocks do."

They have their other shocks on standby in case Jimmy doesn't like the feel of the new shock.

12:27

The CRA Super Late Models have been split into groups for practice. The second group is out now. 2009 North South winner Jeff Fultz is in this group.
