Our stats team high above the Room of Doom has been crunching the numbers. In addition to the 30 drivers who locked into the Derby through qualifying tonight, there are seven additional spots.

31 – 34 – Last Chance race
35 – 36 – Blizzard Series provisionals
37 – Past champion provisional.

PENDING TECH, those provisionals currently would belong to Mike Garvey and Logan Boyett (Blizzzard) and Steve Wallace (Past Champ). If any of those three drivers make the race via the Last Chance, their slots will not be filled as all the other past champions and 2012 Blizzard top-ten finishers locked themselves in tonight.

8:24
The command to start engines for the Super Stock race has been given – before the crossover gates were closed. So that led to some scurrying around to get across the track before the cars start rolling.

8:19
TECH: So far, all the drivers who were not in the top five are in a line to have their ignition boxes impounded. Then, they have their qualifying tires taken off and impounded. The top five cars have not yet started going through the tech process.

7:51
There are some posted awards for Snowball Derby qualifying. The polesitter will receive $1,750 from Hamner Racing Engines and WXBM. The 31st qualifier, who unofficially is Brian Campbell, will receive $250 from Hamner Racing Engines. The #31 is notable because it is the first position that is not locked in.

Keep in mind though that this is highly unofficial. There will be technical inspection after qualifying and in the past there have been a few drivers who have gotten disqualified for various infractions. This could move someone outside the top 30 into the top 30. The qualifying drama will continue here tonight until tech inspection is complete. We are following all of the developments and we will keep you posted right here at Speed51.com.

7:47
Just talked to Ricky Brooks. He said that when you get 30 cars within 3/10ths…we did a good job.

VDL Fuel Systems, of Theodore, Alabama, has quietly become one of the major players in the carburetion business – not because they try to mass-produce carburetors for everyone, but because they build them to customer need and customer specification. No matter what kind of engine or fuel you use, the real key to the combination’s performance is the carburetor bolted to the top of the power plant. Just ask us at VDL Fuel Systems. Good Luck Austin Theriault!!!

6:15
Logan Boyett only practiced his Snowball entry this morning, avoiding the afternoon heat that claimed a few cars in practice. Boyett actually favours his middle-of-the-pack draw – 47th – because he feels the dew will start setting in if you go out too late, costing those drivers a little speed.

Today’s Trackside Now coverage on Speed51.com is presented by VDL Fuel Systems of Theodore, Alabama.

The team has since changed wheels, tires and weights, but that was just about all they needed to do to get this in the Super Stock division.

You are partially correct. Austin Theirault ran a very limited schedule of PASS North races this year – winning the season finale at Oxford Plains Speedway (ME). He ran full-time on the ACT Late Model Tour. However, he races down South for the Vrad Keselwoski Racing team that is based in North Carolina and has no connections to the PASS North Tour. The other drivers that were mentioned were all looking at running their PASS North cars in this race.

Former Snowball Derby winner Clay Rogers was practicing Austin Theriualt’s Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model during that practice. With Theriault running the Derby for the first time, Theriault wanted to focus solely on the drive of his Snowball machine and didn’t want to confuse himself too much by having to constantly adjust his driving style.

Today’s Trackside Now coverage on Speed51.com is presented by VDL Fuel Systems of Theodore, Alabama.

Team chatter on pit road as they watch the Montineri car get the rollback is about the slickness of the track. Having watched Mingus, Boswell and now Montineri crash coming off of Turn Four within the span of an hour, you can definitely tell treacherous Turn Four is starting to get into people’s heads, some drivers thinking maybe some fluid or speedy dry is making it slicker than ever before, some just attributing it to the extra speed sticker tires entail.

We want to thank everyone for all of their comments and questions. We will try to answer all of them that we can, but please don’t be offended if we run out of time to get to yours. A few questions, such as how a certain driver did in practice, can be answered by looking through our early entries of the day. Some questions might take a little bit of time or research to answer – so please be patient. Also, any comments or questions that contain profanity or attack anyone will not be able to be posted. We try to keep this family friendly after all! Thanks for your input and keep it coming.

11:28
Brian Campbell says the car is real close to where it was yesterday. They made a few minor changes and are very pleased as to how things have gone after having had to put it all back together last night after the practice crash with oil on the track. The crew and driver still remain very positive

Man, tonights qualifing is gonna be intense. By the times already being set on mock qualifing runs, looks like there is a chance at another track record. I wonder what is gonna be the difference between 1st and 30th. Better bring your A game to qualify if you wanna lock yourself in.

Crew chief Joe Wood gave us an update on the number six Pro Late Model of Austin Luedtke. They had fellow Midwesterner Ross Kenseth shake the car down and they both were feeling the same thing. They tweaked on it and hope to find some speed as they need to lay down two solid laps to get into the show and then they feel they have a pretty good race setup.

Great job on the 20 car repair, congrats to all involved. With that type of effort and spirit maybe the Grinch will steal the Derby! While Cale Gale is not at the Derby I believe his 2010 pole winning car is the 9 of Brandon Watson.

Heading to turn paper in now. See you guys in a couple of hours. Also would like to pass on that NASCAR Nationwide driver Brian Scott is on his way to Pensacola to help out. Friend Steven Wallace. (per Scott’s twitter)

The Super Stocks division is similar to Sportsman and/or Pro Stock-type cars seen in the Great Lakes States. A variation of a more modern Street Stock but more hi-tech.

9:39
Mike Garvey’s team took their Snowflake car out of the track last night to look things over and make sure it’s good to go for this weekend. They made a few minor adjustments and returned this morning.

9:39
AP Brakes will be presenting Speed51.com’s “Stop of the Day” Award each day during Snowball Derby week. This will go to the driver that puts the biggest stop to bad luck, stops to avoid some trouble or puts a halt to any kind of negative vibes that may be surrounding his car.

Yesterday’s winner was Chase Miller, who got hard on the binders to avoid a spinning Tim Martin in turn two during Late Model practice yesterday. We’ll announce today’s winner later on.

AP Racing’s core product range includes clutches, calipers, discs, pads, master cylinders, pedal boxes and air jacks, as well as road and competition brake systems for motorcycles. For more information on AP Racing, visit www.apracing.com

The Snowflake 100 Pro Late Models will Practice today for an hour with the Snowball Derby Super Late Models from 10:00-11:00am before getting their own hour to themselves from 2:00-3:00pm. They will Practice again tomorrow morning before Qualifying in the Afternoon.

9:35
We checked in with Erik Darnell who battled Ignition problems yesterday for a better part of the afternoon. They never used any sticker tires in practice ether as they spend the whole time on scuff tires.

Today is perhaps one of the more intense days other than the Snowball Derby itself as later tonight will be WXBM Pole Qualifying. The Top 30 cars are locked into the 45th annual Snowball Derby and in addition, a total of $1750 is up for grabs in qualifying bonuses, including $1,000 from WXBM 102.7FM here in Pensacola and $750 from Hamner Racing Engines.

In addition, Hamner Racing Engines has put up $250 for the driver who qualifies 31st, the first to not lock in on time and having to run the Last-Chance Race tomorrow.

THURSDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Last night an unapproved lower control arm cost James Patrick a second-place finish in West Florida Coating Sportsman feature results. That was not the biggest story of the night as Gary Goodwin was stripped of his Butler U-Pull-It Bomber Division feature win for having springs outside the tolerance according to Head Tech Inspector Ricky Brooks.

Dennis Prunty, who is trying to make his fourth Snowball Derby, said they went through two sets of tires yesterday and doesn’t plan on using any sticker sets for practice today. They made two mock runs and said the car feels pretty good. Interesting note…Prunty said that when you walk around Five Flags Speedway, it has about the same look as his hometrack Slinger Speedway, but nothing close to it in his car.

They returned to the track at 3:30am and went to bed at 4am. Brian said they have a nap time scheduled from 12:30-1pm. The rear clip, back window, fuel cell and rear body was replaced. He said the motor did move an inch but think they have back in the right spot. The car just went through the referee and is on the scales. Passed but going to do some work. All smiles on the team.

The #26 is the Pollard family’s own car. They are being sponsored by JEGS – which is connected to Bubba’s role this weekend as driver coach for Snowflake 100 driver Cody Coughlin. In recent races where his time hasn’t been split between his own team and the Coughlin team, Bubba has served as Coughlin’s crew chief.
