You guys do such a great job, but I wish there was a radio broadcast of the draw!

5:57
We’re less than 3 minutes away from the Red Bull Qualifying Draw.
5:57
We are about to enter the qualifying draw at the top of the hour.

Some reminders about the draw. Both Snowball and Snowflake drivers will draw tonight. There will also be extra numbers in the draw bucket, so if no driver for example draws no. 1, the highest number will instead go out first.

In general, a later Snowball Derby qualifying spot is considered better because that is at night and speed tends to increase with cooler temperatures. The Snowflake quals are run from 2 to 3 PM on Saturday, so there is no considerable advantage to a slot in that division.

Ricky Brooks has told Speed51.com that this year’s day of pre-race technical inspection was the easiest opening day of technical inspection in the time that he has been here. He said that there were no major issues and described the day as “lovely”.
5:03
The technical inspection area is now officially closed for the day.

4:57
The Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51 has been cleared in tech and has been approved for practice tomorrow after addressing the earlier ignition wiring issues.
4:55
Looks like one Wisconsin driver helped another get passed tech today. Austin Luedtke noted this on Facebook. Thanks to Dennis Prunty for letting us use his spare crane ignition system, and being our pre-pre tech official! Making sure we are following the rules to the T.”
4:54
Ross Kenseth isn’t here at the track today. Where is he? Ross just posted on Facebook that he is busy taking a calculus exam at Clemson University. We expect him to be here to practice tomorrow.
4:50
Short track legend Dick Trickle ran in four Snowball Derby’s and finished fifth twice (1979,84) and 12th in 1980 and sixth in 1988.
4:50
There are remote parking areas and shuttles to the track, so I would think that your rig could be fit. But it would be wise to call the track office at Five Flags Speedway to be sure.
4:50
Comment From Kevin Pixley

I may be in the area on Saturday, is there any parking for a tractor trailer?

4:49
Just in case anybody was wondering…Ross Kenseth, who is hoping to win his first Snowball Derby after finishing third last season, has already had a better finish than his dad in this historic event. His father, 2003 NASCAR Champ, Matt Kenseth ran in the Derby in 1995 where he finished 40th and 16th in 1996.
4:49

4:43
Scott Carlson was not officially on the entry list until this morning. The odds were prepared earlier in the week.
4:43
Comment From Jdub74

How did Scott Carlson, N not atleast get on the 37 to 1 odds for the Snowball? He and Niedecken have more laps at this track than many of the youngsters have for lifetime laps anywhere. “Stat boy” needs to post some numbers for that home track advantage.

4:42
Chris Davidson’s Pro Late Model did – but it was in support of the larger hauler that hojavascript:void(0);used his Super Late Model.

Speed51.com’s broadcasters will then take over for the rest of the weekend with live broadcasts of the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 Saturday and the 45th Annual Snowball Derby on Sunday.

3:57
Currently there are no cars in the tech line but there is a long line for the carb inspection. Ricky Brooks is personally looking at each carb.
3:55
DJ Vanderley and Steve Wallace are only running the Snowball Derby and will not be running in the Snowflake.
3:52
Kyle Benjamin has also loaded up his car for today.
3:51
2012 Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series Champion Bubba Pollard, in addition to going for his first Snowball Derby victory, will be serving in a driver coach role for Snowflake 100 entrant Cody Coughlin.  Pollard has been crew chiefing Coughlin’s efforts in recent events, but because the Snowball Derby means so much to Pollard, he will be focusing his attention to his own JEGS No. 26 Super Late Model, while also consulting and serving as a driver coach for Coughlin.  Because both divisions practice together, it would be tough for Pollard to split his attention completely between both efforts.  Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Crew Chief Kevin Hamlin will be calling the shots during Snowflake 100 practice and more for Coughlin.  Veteran short tracker and NASCAR racer Scott Wimmer will be Coughlin’s spotter this weekend.
3:49
Speed51.com chatted with 1971 and 1973 Snowball Derby winner Dickie Davis earlier this afternoon and even though he is retired from driving racecars, we found out that he still keeps up with the sport. Davis told us that qualifying for the Derby is the biggest race of the weekend with “some really money cars” going home. He also pointed out a few young drivers – Kenzie Ruston and Ben Kennedy – as being very talented and capable of doing big things in the Derby.
3:44
Bubba Pollard’s team is loading up their #26 Super Late Model and are apparently finished working on it for today.
3:44
An update on the Kyle Busch situation.  The KBM team plans to keep the ignition box they currently have in the car and just change out the wiring to fit the approved wiring configuration as previously announced in a bulletin for this event by Ricky Brooks.  According to Brooks, Busch’s team simply “didn’t pay attention” to the bulletin.

Because Busch’s team only brought the wiring that is currently in the car, they are working with some of their friends in the infield to try to borrow wires to connect their current box with approved connections.

We also just finished talking to David Rogers, the cagy veteran still looking for his first Snowball victory after having been in this race some 27 times previous. Rogers, for the first time he can ever remember, rented out his home track of New Smyrna Speedway last weekend so he could shake down his #11 TM Ranch machine.

For Rogers it was a brand new chassis after he demolished his previous lead machine in the final Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series race here this season. Rogers said the car they just bought, a chassis from Eberstein Racecars, was built identical to the previous car, so they didn’t expect anything major to change with the handle, just wanted to shake it down.

When asked if New Smyrna was in any way identical to Five Flags, Rogers said that no, the tracks are completely different. But he figured the setup worked fine on both cars at New Smyrna, then he could take his usual setup from Five Flags and throw it on this new chassis without any real trouble.

We talked to Clay Alexander about being the first team to pull into Five Flags this morning. Says it was a happy accident, his team was just staying down in Destin, FL after testing here on Sunday and they left a bit earlier this morning than they probably needed to. Clay’s dad, former NASCAR All-American champion Mike Alexander, was the team’s hauler driver this weekend.

As for Clay, he says you obviously can’t attribute much race success to simply being the first one to pull into the track, but that it was very neat his team got to kick off Derby track festivities and it certainly can’t hurt in the luck department.

Word from the tech shed and Ricky Brooks is that Kyle Busch’s car has not yet passed tech.  There is an issue with the connectors on the ignition box of Busch’s No. 51.  The team just tried rolling through tech again and Brooks was still not accepting of the connectors to the box.  The crew has returned to their pit stall for further work to the ignition system.

Mike Garvey did a little bit of testing here for the Snowball Derby this past weekend, but it didn’t turn out well. Garvey wrecked his Tracy Goodson-owned #1 machine and had to piece it back together to get it to the track today.

Garvey was a little bit of a story teller when he described the effort that was needed to get back here.

“We worked for 48 hours straight without even a sip of water,” joked Garvey. “We had special tubing flown in from China to rebuild the car.”

In reality, Garvey told us that the car was not heavily damaged. It didn’t need a clip. It did require a workday until 11pm and then an early morning appearance at Goodson’s shop in Pensacola the next morning.

The experience did leave Garvey with one wish for this week.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a nice and boring week here now,” said Garvey.

Silas is driving an entry fielded by David Ragan.  The cars look identical, with Silas’ being a Snowflake entry and Ragan’s car being a Snowball car.  The only major difference in the appearance of the two cars is that Ragan’s SLM has his Ford dealership’s signage and Shriner’s Hospitals logos, while Silas’ Pro car has his family’s Palm Beach Grading signage on it.

While most of the drivers pulling double-duty this weekend have similar chassis in the two divisions, Chris Davidson will be wheeling two different chassis manufacturers’ machines in the Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby.

Davidson’s Snowball Derby entry will be a Hamke-chassis No. 41.  The Texan has a Port City chassis for his Pro Late Modle.  Davidson purchased a Port City chassis from fellow racer Mike Garvey earlier this season and the driver and crew have grown fond of the car.  They plan to make their entire racing fleet Port City chassis in 2013.

2:29
Another driver that is celebrating a birthday today is Chase Elliott. He turns 17 today. He is in school today and is heading down to the Snowball Derby after school tonight.

Great question.  Check out this story that we wrote on Speed51.com a couple weeks back about why Augie is driving the Stanley Smith Super Late Model, a Bragg Racing Pro Late Model and why Kenzie Ruston is driving Augie’s defending Snowflake 100-winning car.

Earlier today, we told you how the inspection team was doing safety inspections on the Snowball Derby cars in each pit area this year. We have been updated by technical director Ricky Brooks that the new procedure is working out and that over 50 Super Late Models have already been inspected.
1:44
Just checked in with tech man Ricky Brooks once again and still things are pretty quiet in the tech line.  Just a few minor things, such as trimming up of the spoilers and some minor body tweaks, have been reported.
1:38
He’s here with the Jeff Burton Autosport No. 12 Pro Late Model.  McReynolds, an ARCA Racing Series winner earlier this year at Talladega, is driving a PLM that will be piloted mostly by the NASCAR star Burton’s young son Harrison at tracks throughout the Southeast in 2013.

We have confirmed too that the Snowball Derby entry for Scott Mulkern was withdrawn and that the Maine driver will not be racing here this week. However, Mulkern is still coming to the Derby and will help out Austin Theriault – who drove Mulkern’s car in the PASS North race at Seekonk Speedway (MA) this summer. Theirault is driving for Brad Keselowski Racing this weekend here at Five Flags Speedway.

We just checked in with head Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 tech man Ricky Brooks.  So far today, there have not been any major issues for anyone in tech.  The most common issue so far has been that some teams have presented their cars in tech without a driver.  Each driver is being weighed both in the car and out of it, so those teams will have to present their cars again once their driver arrives either today or tomorrow before the car can go on track.

Not much work getting done here today, busy thinking about Sunday. Oh how I would love to see Cale Gale and and Kyle Busch side by side coming out of 4 on the last lap.

In talking to several of the teams throughout the pit area, the average tire bill is in the $3,000-3,500 range.

One of the more precious things for the weekend. An electrical outlet.(Speed51.com Photo)
10:25
Teams have just been reminded that they are to keep their trailer doors closed until all of the rigs are parked.
10:25
Although the haulers have entered the track, there are still 12 rigs that are still staged in the infield to actually take their parking spots. These big haulers take a little bit of time to actually get into place.
10:24
Only one toterhome and one open trailer with a covered race car on it remain in the outer parking lot. There are a number of support divisions racing here this weekend, so those teams might be here for those races. Only the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 teams are allowed to enter the infield today.

Just spoke to David Ragan. Looking forward to this weekend. He considers this to be a fun vacation.
10:22
Most of the rigs that are here today are now inside the track and are in the process of being parked in their assigned spots.
10:22
There is not a single cloud in the sky here at Pensacola. There is not any rain predicted for the rest of Derby week either – so it looks like this will be a very plesant place to be for the remainder of the race week.

When I win the powerball tonight I will be there and buy a shiny ride for the weekend.

10:15
Earlier today, and for much of this week actually, haulers have been staged in the parking lot of Five Flags Speedway. At this point, so many of them have actually entered the infield that the parking lot looks bare. That won’t be the case this week though as fans packed the parking lot for the Derby week races. Savy fans can actually park in a remote lot near the track and take a shuttle to the races. That makes getting to and from the track an easy experience.

It takes longer to actually back and jockey the trailers into their spaces than it does to get them to pull to the infield – so that has created a little bit of a traffic jam. Haulers are backed up through turns three and four and onto the backstretch as they gain entry to the infield.

If you are driving down the Interstate and the bright red Freightliner tractor trailer rig of Chase Elliott comes up behind you, you will know who it is – even though there are no decals on the trailer itself. “Elliott Racing” is neatly laser-etched into the chrome front bumper on what might just be the shiniest rig here on Derby week.

Nelson Piquet, Jr.’s entry is heading onto the track and the Five Flags Speedway PA system is playing the national anthem of his homeland Brazil as it heads down the backstretch.
9:21
Ross Kenseth’s team has pulled their rig onto the track. Despite winning the All American 400 and the Winchester 400 this year, Kenseth does not have a huge hauler. His racecar is coming to the track in a black gooseneck trailer behind a Ford dually.

Today is Mason Mingus’s 18th birthday.

Although the trailers are in the infield now, those gaining earlier access to the track will not really have an advantage. That is because no trailer doors – side or rear – can be opened until a designated time later this morning. Teams that are in the infield already are just milling around and chatting while they wait.
9:18
Kyle Benjamin is now pulling into the track with his rig.
9:17
Of the 14 rigs in the infield already, two are tractor trailer set-ups, five are pick-ups and enclosed traulers and seven are toterhome/stacker set-ups.
