Word is the motor mounts are fine on Marty White’s car but not sure how much more will be salvagable. (Speed51.com Photo)

10:59
Shanna Ard just drove down pit road under caution, we will see if we can dig up what is going on with that top-ten competitor.

10:56
Five Flags general manager is a very hands-on track manager. An hour ago he was in the booth helping deal with the trash for the day. Now we see him at the accident scene, helping hook the McLendon machine onto the rollback

10:55

Ron McLendons’s car will need the rollback. (Speed51.com Photo)

10:53

Marty White’s car was actually pinned under the guardrail in turn two. (Speed51.com Photo)

10:52
We have been told by 51 staff in the infield both drivers have climbed out of their cars under their own power

10:51
Under this red we notice leader James Patrick talking to track officials. It may be about a flat tire, we noticed some tire smoke as he slowed down for the crash and red flag

10:49

10:39
Jimmy Thompson, the driver of the #77 Bomber, will leave the facility at the back of an ambulence to receive further medical evaluation. 10:31
LAP 20 – Buttrick now under heavy fire from Patrick as the lead quartet approaches lapped traffic.

This driver had never been here to Five Flags Speedway before. Sure he had won some big Late Model Stock races in his career and an ARCA race earlier this year at Talladega, but Five Flags and the Snowflake 100 are beasts all of their own. Driving a car for NASCAR star Jeff Burton, McReynolds shined on Thursday. He took the Jeff Burton Autosport No. 12 Pro Late Model to the top of the charts of all the Snowflake 100 Pro Late Models.

Performing in the clutch is what seperates a winning driver from the rest of the pack. Flexing muscle at the right time is something that true talents posess. Often luck plays a big role in winning versus losing, but being able to squeeze just enough strength out at the perfect opportunity is what separates winners from losers. Performing in the clutch doesn’t necessarily mean winning, however; it’s all about making the most from what you’ve got.

That’s why Quarter Master, providers of winning clutches & driveline components to racers from Super Speedway to the Bullring, from IRL to Rally, from NASCAR to the “Weekend Warrior,” is proud to honor a weekly “Clutch Performance of the Month” from the short track ranks of America. Each month, an esteemed panel of short track industry insiders will vote on which drivers came through in the clutch. The driver or team with the most votes will then be the “Clutch Performance of the Month.” At the end of the 2011 season, the driver or team that received the most votes throughout the season will then be the “Clutch Performer of the Year” and will be awarded a clutch kit from Quarter Master, valued at $3,500.

This week’s “Quarter Master Clutch Performance of the Month” is more of a “Clutch Performance of the Quarter,” as the season is just now getting fully ramped up. This award goes to …

AP Brakes will be presenting Speed51.com’s “Stop of the Day” Award each day during Snowball Derby week. This will go to the driver that puts the biggest stop to bad luck, stops to avoid some trouble or puts a halt to any kind of negative vibes that may be surrounding his car.

The first winner of the week is Chase Miller. Miller got hard on the binders of his Pro Late Model to avoid a spinning Tim Martin. It was a narrowly-avoided incident for Miller, a former short track regular who has spent some time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in recent seasons.

AP Racing’s core product range includes clutches, calipers, discs, pads, master cylinders, pedal boxes and air jacks, as well as road and competition brake systems for motorcycles. For more information on AP Racing, visit www.apracing.com

Each day during Snowball Derby week, Speed51.com will award a Snowball Derby or Snowflake 100 driver a “Five Star Race Car Bodies ‘Tough Guy Award.’ This will go to a driver who showed some toughness or battled back from adversity in some way.

The Tough Guy Award is presented by Five Star Race Car Bodies. After years of research and development, Five Star’s engineers have uncovered the secret to Higher Performance Composites: ULTRAGLASS! For more on Five Star and its ULTRAGLASS line, visit www.fivestarbodies.com.

The first “Tough Guy” of the week goes to Ben Kennedy. Kennedy crashed his Snowflake 100 car and had several headaches throughout opening on-track day of Snowball Derby week. Still, he and his BK Racing team fought through it all to get cars back on track and dialed in.

Check back during Friday’s coverage for that day’s Five Star Race Car Bodies “Tough Guy Award.”

Just cating up on what I’ve missed today. I hate seeing Brian Campbell’s car crashed after looking at the earlier practice speeds. Hope they get that good looking ride repaired throughout the night and bring that trophy back here to Michigan.

5:51
We see Chase Elliott’s #9 Snowball car at the end of pit road Chase’s team has fought a vibration since putting in their back up engine earlier today, so they want to make sure they fixed it before the end of the day. The track will thus give Elliott a courtesy lap here after Sportsman practice to shake it out before parking it for the day.

Not really to be honest. Sadly, the first day of Derby practice always claims a few cars. Campbell and Tuck were the only cars that really got torn up today, Kennedy and Griffith will need some work, but otherwise most everyone else leaves the track today unscathed.

We’ve been informed of a change of plans regarding Brian Campbell. Initially we were told his team would be performing their work at the Jeremy Pate race shop, but they are instead heading to Tracy Goodson Racing (the team that fields the #1s of Mike Garvey)

To put a period on the Brian Campbell story, the Wyoming, Michigan driver stated that; “We traveled 17 hours to get here. We were fast before we crashed, and we certainly didn’t come down here to not run! We get into the show, anything can happen. This entire KBR Development team doesn’t want to go home, so we’re fixing this thing and we’re going to see if we can come back home with the trophy, even with a bent racecar.”

Great to hear that the KBR team is gonna fix it! A great feel good story!

4:23
Update from Brian Campbell’s pit.

The team will attempt to fix their car overnight at local racer Jeremy Pate’s race shop. They’ve consulted with ARbodies staff members here at the track and new body panels will be put on the cars at Pate’s and the rear clip of the No. 20 Super Late Model will be repaired as well. Campbell’s car owner, Mike Bursley, also used to own a chassis-building shop. Armed with the people and the parts, the team will now look to make a return with a repaired car tomorrow for practice and qualifying.

4:22
Casey Smith’s car is also sitting with its hood up. The car is also on scale pads as well.

4:21
While most teams have loaded up for the day, Kyle Busch’s team is working under the hood of their #51 Super Late Model.

4:21
Mike Garvey’s team has loaded their Snowflake 100 car onto an open trailer to bring it back to their Pensacola shop to work on its set-up tonight. They just were not happy with the way that the car felt.

Regarding Fast Eddie’s, I believe it was originally founded by Fast Eddie Mercer, and Scott Carlson managed it for him before eventually buying him out. Don’t hold me to that, but that’s the way I heard the story some years back.

3:14
We are looking at roughly 30 Bombers and 30 Sportsman for tonight’s racing action.

Nelson Piquet Jr. just went to the top of the charts with a lap time of 16.923.

3:10
17.587 is the fastest time for a Snowflake car….that car is Austin Luedtke’s car that is currently being driven by Ross Kenseth. Kenseth is helping his fellow Pathfinder Chassis driver set up his car.

Brandon McReynolds is driving the #12 machine for Jeff Burton this weekend. Jeff is looking to get a late model program together for his young son, Harrison Burton, to pilot next year, so he turned to McReynolds to help get the program going.

Heard Jeff Burton has a car in the field. Does he have a driver development program?

sure will be hard knowing someone other than Augie in the red #112 machine. AHHHH!

2:53
Brian Campbell said that he got in some fluid and went right into the wall. He feels real bad. Mike Bursley just arrived at the track about 20 minutes ago. Bursley is the GM of Berlin Raceway and the owner of Campbell’s car.

2:52

Kevin Donahue gets ready for another run on track once cleanup is complete. (Speed51.com Photo)

2:52
Ben Kennedy said his spin was the result of whatever fluid was on the track in turn one. Unlike Campbell, Kennedy was luckily able to avoid severe damaged, just getting the left door. It was his Snowflake car and the biggest thing is that his engine may have shifted an inch or two from the crash.

Ben Kennedy told us that he got into some fluid on the track and the car got away from him. It was his Snowflake 100 car and he thinks it is fixable. There is damage to the left front suspension and the engine might have been shifted over slightly.

2:50

2:50
Brian Campbell does not have a back-up car. They are looking over the damage, but the team has told us that they are most likely done for the weekend.

any times for the supers and pros yet

12:49
We have seen Canadian driver John Fleming attempt to make the Snowball Derby and Mainers Johnny Clark and Cassius Clark run here in the past. Scott Mulkern is here and filed an entry for this year, but withdrew it this week. Mulkern had raced in the Snowflake 100 earlier in his career.

12:48
Comment From River Glade
Great coverage, as a Maritimer it would sure be cool to see some of our SLM teamsor those guys in New England have a budget to run this event. Pretty stout field!

12:48
Most of the teams are enjoying lunch right now, but we can see some activity down in the pit area. Ross Kenseth’s team are making adjustments to their #25 machine. The team of Jeff Fultz is working as well. Chase Elliott’s team is still completing their engine change on the #9 Super Late Model.

12:47
Ricky Brooks joins us on top of the Room of Doom, eating some delicious chili during this lunch break. He’s been in a good mood after the last few days of tech have been very calm. He even used the term “lovely” to describe Tech Day yesterday.

12:37
Ben Kennedy’s team has taken their Snowball Derby car out for just short runs thus far, they want to get some long runs in after lunch before they look at the Snowflake machine.

Bryan Silas is enjoying his first time here, says the track is a blast and compared it to Rockingham, the one-mile abrasive track up in the sandhills of North Carolina

Kyle Grissom was the first car out this morning but they discovered they had water in the fuel cell and has spent most of the morning cleaning out the lines. They said that this issue has put them way behind on what their plans and goals were for today. Hope to be back out soon.

12:27
Brad Rogers and team are throwing the kitchen sink at their race car, they are not thrilled with their #0 machine’s effort.

As for Matt Montineri’s team, they are still waiting their driver to arrive from central Florida, so the car has yet to see a lap of practice today.

Jeff Fultz’s team likes the speed in their car at the moment but not the front suspension, as the front keeps hitting the track. They’re going to raise the car up a bit for the next practice outing and will see if they can make a speedy car speedier.

12:18
Earlier there was a question about Canadian racing legend Junior Hanley. He has not won the Snowball Derby before as a driver, but has raced in this event. He finished 12th in 1990.

Elliott’s team, as you just saw the picture of a few minutes ago, is working on the motor change still. They are in no particular hurry. They do want laps today, but obviously the team is confident in their driver and general chassis being the defending winner of this race, so there’s no need to rush things and possibly harm the new motor

David Rogers is only making minor tweaks after his first practice runs today. The car could be improved he feels but he is hesitant to make too many changes. You get in trouble here if you throw the kitchen sink at it he says.

10:49

10:47
A.J. Frank’s team is thrashing around their car, discontent with how their Snowball Derby entry is running right now. For Frank (and for a lot of drivers here), the big thing right now is Snowball Derby qualifying. If you are in the top-thirty in time trials Friday night, you are in the show. Frank could care less about Sunday right now, just focusing on two laps of qualifying tomorrow.

10:46
David Rogers has been coming to this race for 30 years and now he is still doing things old school. His team has not been wearing any radios during this practice session – they’ve just been using stopwatches instead.

The Best Appearing Car winners will each get a one-page website design provided by 51 Sports, the parent company of Speed51.com.

Following up with Wes Griffith, who spun out right behind Anderson Bowen in the first practice. He never touched Bowen, instead getting his left front damage from the wall. He attributes his spin to Steve Dorer, who did not check up as quickly as he did.

10:43
Augie Grill is leaning against the quarter panel of his #49 Super Late Model in street clothes. Every year, we wonder when he will finally come out to practice and right now, it does not look like that will be anytime soon.

10:43
Brian Campbell is moved into the top ten and is currently tenth with a time of 17.159.

10:41
Kyle Busch is on track now.

10:41
Top five hasn’t changed. Every hour we will post the full practice time rundown.

Did Boris Jurkovic ever make it there?

10:40
Jeff Choquette has made only minor tweaks to his #29 Derby machine after the start of practice. It’s not perfect but he doesn’t want to do too much to it early in the morning since he says the track can “change 180 degrees on you.”

Steve Wallace quickly said his car is “real good, real good” and then hopped in to get another run going.

10:38
Logan Boyett appears to be changing the shocks. He is working on the left rear while a crew member works on the right side.

10:38
Anderson Bowen, who spun in the first half hour of practice, said he just plain lost the racecar by himself. Perhaps something to attribute to the “Snowball jitters”

10:36
Bubba Pollard has kept his Snowball Derby car sidelined for the first part of today as he helps out the JEGS team Snowflake effort of Cody Coughlin. Pollard is the driver coach for Coughlin for the Snowflake and says the first run for Coughlin’s team went well and the car is fairly neutral. Pollard does plan to practice the Super Late model today.

10:31

Kenseth team changing rear gear. (Speed51.com Photo)

10:30
This is a scheduled break to allow people to cross over from outside the track to the infield area.

10:30
Ross Kenseth’s team is making a gear change as Kenseth says the car just doesn’t feel right to him after a few practice rounds. That said, Kenseth is still relatively happy since he’s never had a car come off the hauler this quick.

10:30
The caution is now out.

10:30
One crew member is now working on Augie Grill’s Stanley Smith-owned #49 Super Late Model. It still does not look like Grill is planning to practice any time soon.

10:29
Jeff Choquette breaks into the top ten, currently ninth with a time of 17.158 seconds.

10:29
There will be five more laps of practice before a scheduled red flag to allow crossing over the track.

10:28
Piquet is up to 12th with a time of 17.239 seconds. David Ragan is 13th with a 17.268.

10:28
Ricky Turner, crew chief for the #9 of Chase Elliott, just told Speed51.com that when he went to fire the motor on their Snowball Derby car this morning, the team noticed smoke belching out of it. No need to take chances he felt, so he made the call to put in the back up motor.

10:25
Cole Powell is pretty happy after his first run of the day. His team bought their #73 Snowball Derby late model in North Carolina two weeks ago, took it straight down to Five Flags to test, and were honestly not pleased on that initial test day. They had to replace the rear end, shocks, and motor so for all intents and purposes this was a completely different car for them. Right now, this rebuilt machine is a bit tight but they are practicing on old tires so they are taking that with a grain of salt.

10:23
Austin Theriault still has the fastest time in practice with his time of 16.977 seconds. Not much change in the top ten with the exception of Chuck Barnes Jr. breaking into the top ten with a lap time of 17.057 seconds. Fifth quick so far.

We just talked to Chase Elliott, who said that Ricky Turner saw something that he didn’t like with the engine in the #9 car, so they elected to change it. Elliott did not know exactly what the issue was. We will attempt to talk to Turner when he is available, but right now he is busy changing the engine.

Comment From David
Wow .. I just learned that Casey Smith made the trip and his Dad stayed behind to run the business .. I have been following Casey since quarter midgets and I am pretty sure this is the first race Glen has missed .. Good luck to the 99 team

9:40
Track promoter Tim Bryant is a busy guy here this week. In the past ten minutes, we have seen him in the infield talking to teams, in the grandstand area talking to employees and now up in the tower operating the scoreboard.

9:38
So far, Kyle Grissom is the only competitor lined up for practice. Most of the other teams are trying to get all of their warm-ups and adjustments in before they hit the track for the first time of the week.

9:37
Five Flags Speedway promoter Tim Byrant is currently milling around the infield and talking to teams who are here for this weekend’s races.

Butch VanDoorn is assisting the Anderson Bowen team this weekend. His brother, three-time CRA Super Series champion, Johnny VanDoorn did not make the trip.

9:34
It appears that Kyle Grissom is the first entrant lined up for practice this morning. Grissom was recently crowned as the 2012 PASS South champion.

9:33
We just talked to Bryan Silas, who is here driving the Pro Late Model for NASCAR driver David Ragan. It’s the fulfillment of a business relationship Ragan and Silas made in ARCA a few years ago.

Silas had never seen much less raced at Five Flags before this week, so practice in half an hour will be his first time seeing this track. His goal is pretty simple – “Make the race”

9:32
Five Flags Speedway can be a tricky track to master on cold tires. Even some of the most veteran drivers have had issues, spins or wrecks while hitting the track for the first time of the day. We will keep that in mind during the opening minutes of Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 practice as those on track activities kick off in less than a half hour.

9:30

Love that pic seeing the #7 of Darnell and the #51 being unloaded of my bro Nasse

Some notes from the drivers’ meeting that just concluded:

The carburetor that teams will run today must be the same carburetor they run race day.

Ricky Brooks and the “Room of Doom” will take the ignition boxes of the top thirty qualifiers Friday night, test them overnight, and then return them, randomly assigned to the teams. Since Five Flags has a mandatory Crane Cams ignition box rule, all the boxes should be the same.

Teams will have transponders today but they must turn them in before 5 PM.

Yesterday was tech day at the Snowball Derby. Ricky Brooks said last night that in his time as the tech director for the Derby, this was probably the best tech day he had so far. Brooks said that one thing that really helped was that his crew did their safety tech at each pit rather than in the tech line and it made the line go faster.

As far as we know, there are no tech issues lying over to today. Kyle Busch did have a wiring issue with his ignition box that they said last night has been fixed. This issue stemmed from a bulletin that Brooks sent out prior to the Derby relating to the wiring connections he wants in the cars so that he can switch out ignition boxes if he wanted too. Busch’s car, from what we are told, is up to par.
