Tech has cleared. Chase Elliott is the OFFICIAL winner of the Allen Turner Hyundai 100
9:52
The valve covers are going back on the engine of Chase Elliott’s car.

9:51
There have been through the years quite a few tech disqualifications, which is why Speed 51 is so diligent about remaining at the track until tech clears.

Since the turn of the millenium, there have been two Snowball DQs:

2006 – Clay Rogers won after BOTH Johnny Brazier and Bobby Gill were thrown out
2008 – Augie Grill inherits after Brian Ickler was thrown out

9:51
Comment From Jane S
Was Brian Ickler the last driver dq’d for his win in the 41st Snowball Derby. The win went to Augie Grill. Ickler was found to have an illegal tire cooling device. Has there been any other winners dq’d after tech in the Snowflake or Snowball Derby??

9:50
The hood is closed on Kyle Benjamin’s car. There is not any active tech inspection going on with Benjamin’s #71.

9:47
Valve covers going back on Mike Garvey’s 2nd-place machine now in tech

TECH: The top three finishers have been over the scales and all of their weights are good. There will be more technical inspection coming up.

9:00
Thanks to everyone for their kind words tonight. Of course this wouldn’t be possible without the fine folks at Five Flags, our sponsors in JEGS and ARbodies, and the drivers who came from across the country to attend this race. We’re blown away to see multiple tweets from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, and Canada just to name a few faraway places all saying they are coming to the Derby.

As always, the best way to thank all of these folks for the effort this week is to show up in person at Five Flags Speedway for the Derby in 2013. We’d love to have you, it is definitely a week unrivaled in short track racing.

8:58
Comment From Jane S
You guys did a great job as always. Have worked with you before at the World Series and then the Legend Nationals and you were always quite the gentlemen. Good work and now on to the bigger race.

There is a packed house here tonight for the Snowflake 100.

Back in 1999, the Five Flags staff wanted to create a race that built up the buzz and atmosphere of the Derby. It was called the Snowflake. In its first year, it was a 200-lapper back in October and Gary St. Amant won the event. They moved it to a 100-lapper the night before the Derby in 2000 and it has served its purpose ever since, a fine prestigious model race in its own right.

Speaking of weather, tomorrow is predicted to have a high of 75 degrees. There has also been low humidity this week and no threat of rain is in the forecast for tomorrow. It’s just about perfect racing weather!

6:52
Driver introductions are underway in front of a packed house. The weather is great for racing – it has cooled off from being around 80 degrees earlier today. The atmosphere is electric and we are not very far from seeing 100 green flag laps of racing action in the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 – live from Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway.

Back in September ,Augie ran a Camping World Truck Series race for Turner Motorsports. The deal was Augie got to race the truck in return for giving the #112 Snowflake ride to newly-crowned Truck champ James Buescher. Buescher’s championship led to a sponsorship committment that prevented him from coming to the Derby this week. In his stead, Turner asked Kenzie Ruston, who will be racing for Turner in the NASCAR K & N Pro Series East next year, to pilot the car. Grill is in a Bragg entry for this race.

6:42
Comment From 21fan
Why isn;t Augie in the 112 this year…is that still his house car ?? Who owns the 22 he is in

5:16
Kyle Bryant has pulled down pit road.

5:16
LAP 47 – We’ve mentioned this a few times today, but Ruston’s team deserves considerable credit. They repaired this thing on the fly and it did not see the track before now. After nearly fifty laps, the repair job is holding up well

5:15
LAP 45 – FIVE TO GO – Dean may have indeed found a little something the last few laps, but it may be too little too late.

5:14
LAP 44 – Gus Dean trying a higher groove now to find anything that will let him catch Griffith.

5:11
Lap 34 – Rusty Sanford is now one lap down.

5:11
LAP 32 – Fleeman now lapping Sanford

5:11
Wolosek stopped on pit road and his car is being pushed back to its hauler.

5:10
LAP 30 – Griffith and Dean for the final transfer spot may be the best battle here in the closing laps. The top three have driven away from Griffith who is clinging to a 4-carlength lead on Dean

5:10

Kyle Wolosek heads to pit road. (SPEED51.com.Photo)

5:10
Lap 30 – Kyle Wolosek is pulling down pit road.

5:09
LAP 25 – HALFWAY – Fleeman has the biggest lead of the day, about half a straightaway up on Miller. Ruston and Griffith maintain the transfer spots but Gus Dean is not going away

5:08
LAP 22 – Miller is the most visibly loose car here, sideways off Turn Four every time

5:07
LAP 20 – Fleeman stretching it out now., Second through fourth all separated by about three carlengths betweenst them.

5:07
We have just confirmed with Technical Director Ricky Brooks that the top four finishers from the Snowball Derby Last Chance race have cleared technical inspection. The starting grid for the 4th Snowball Derby is now set.

5:07
LAP 18 – Griffith has lost contact with Ruston in third, but does now have about two carlengths in hand on Dean.

5:06
LAP 17 – Fleeman out by four carlengths on Miller already. Ruston seems settled in third, no clearly visible adverse effects from the qualifying wreck

5:06
Rusty Sanford has dropped to the rear of the field after the restart.

5:06
LAP 15 – There were no changes in the top five on the retart, but Dean is now on the bumper of Griffith

Let’s give Ricky Brooks a big high 5 for keeping it fair & level

5:02
CAUTION – Elliott Massey has spun on the backstretch

5:02
LAP 13 – Dean has got some cushion on Bryant right now. He rides fifth and is almost a full straightaway behind Griffith for the fourth and final transfer spot

5:01
LAP 11 – While the top four seem pretty set at the moment, Dean and Bryant are going hot and heavy for fifth

5:01
LAP 10 – Fleeman now pulling away from Miller. A four carlength lead at the line.

5:00
LAP 7 – Dean has re-caught Bryant and right on his bumper entering Turn Three

5:00
Kyle Wolosek is staying out on the track, but has dropped to the rear of the field. He is off the pace and appears to be very loose.

5:00
LAP 5 – Fleeman and Miller are pretty much clear of the field with a half straightaway lead on Ruston. She has Griffith not too far behind them but the top four have a nice margin right now on fifth place Bryant

4:59
Lap 4 – The #24 of Kyle Wolosek appears to have a tire going down.

Landon Cassill said his run pretty much summed up their weekend. The right rear tire that they replaced grew to a 3″ stager that made the car very loose. He may have a bad night but he is getting married on 12/28.

4:46
Track officials are discussing when to give him one lap to shake the car down.

4:46
News from the infield…

Snowball Derby pole winner David Ragan broke a ring gear in the rear end of the 77 earlier in practice. The team has made the necessary changes and are now talking with track officials to get an extra lap or two to shake the car down. We’ve got a reporter en route to get the scoop.

4:44
While it is hard to see talented drivers and teams leave this race, this shows the ultra-competitive nature of this race. Prunty (Slinger), Kyle Grisson (PASS South), Anderson Bowen (CRA JEGS Rookie of the Year), Spencer Davis (Gresham), and Brandon Watson (OSCAAR) all did not make the show after winning major titles this year

4:43
Comment From PauliePitStop
Heartbreak for Prunty letting a spot in the Derby slip slide away from him. It’s ashame there can’t be a provisional for drivers with multiple track championships this year (Slinger SLMs and Dells TUNDRA SLMs).

Performing in the clutch is what seperates a winning driver from the rest of the pack. Flexing muscle at the right time is something that true talents posess. Often luck plays a big role in winning versus losing, but being able to squeeze just enough strength out at the perfect opportunity is what separates winners from losers. Performing in the clutch doesn’t necessarily mean winning, however; it’s all about making the most from what you’ve got.

That’s why Quarter Master, providers of winning clutches & driveline components to racers from Super Speedway to the Bullring, from IRL to Rally, from NASCAR to the “Weekend Warrior,” is proud to honor a weekly “Clutch Performance of the Month” from the short track ranks of America. Each month, an esteemed panel of short track industry insiders will vote on which drivers came through in the clutch. The driver or team with the most votes will then be the “Clutch Performance of the Month.” At the end of the 2011 season, the driver or team that received the most votes throughout the season will then be the “Clutch Performer of the Year” and will be awarded a clutch kit from Quarter Master, valued at $3,500.

This week’s “Quarter Master Clutch Performance of the Month” is more of a “Clutch Performance of the Quarter,” as the season is just now getting fully ramped up. This award goes to …

Good job Austin Theriault!!!

A few of the cars that are in the Snowflake Last Chance race are getting staged on pit road.

4:39
Dennis Prunty is dejected that he didn’t make it in. He said he burned up the right rear tire which is something they need to work on for next year. Last word, “Me and my crew are going to drink some beer now and enjoy the rest of the weekend”.

Each day during Snowball Derby week, Speed51.com will award a Snowball Derby or Snowflake 100 driver a “Five Star Race Car Bodies ‘Tough Guy Award.’ This will go to a driver who showed some toughness or battled back from adversity in some way.

The Tough Guy Award is presented by Five Star Race Car Bodies. After years of research and development, Five Star’s engineers have uncovered the secret to Higher Performance Composites: ULTRAGLASS! For more on Five Star and its ULTRAGLASS line, visit www.fivestarbodies.com.

Friday’s “Tough Guy” was Brian Campbell and his KBR Development team. After a hard crash in practice Thursday, Campbell and his team spent until 4am Friday morning working on the car to make the repairs. On little sleep, Campbell went out and qualified his “How the Grinch Stole the Snowball Derby” No. 20 machine into the Snowball Derby on time Friday night.

AP Brakes will be presenting Speed51.com’s “Stop of the Day” Award each day during Snowball Derby week. This will go to the driver that puts the biggest stop to bad luck, stops to avoid some trouble or puts a halt to any kind of negative vibes that may be surrounding his car.

Yesterday, Speed51.com awarded the award to Brad Rogers. Just days before Snowball Derby weekend kicked off, Rogers crashed his No. 0 Super Late Model. Hours of repairs were made and not much rest was had by anyone on his team, but they all got the job done by qualifying for the Snowball Derby on time Friday.

Rogers joins Chase Miller, Thursday’s “AP Stop of the Day” winner.

AP Racing’s core product range includes clutches, calipers, discs, pads, master cylinders, pedal boxes and air jacks, as well as road and competition brake systems for motorcycles. For more information on AP Racing, visit www.apracing.com

The top four cars go straight to tech

4:29
Prunty gave it all he could that final lap, he slid way up the track in Turn Three trying to make his bonzai run, but couldn’t make it stick. After the checkered, he gave the top-four drivers a thumbs up after a good, clean race

4:28
LAP 50 – Paul Kelley wins over Brian Campbell. Austin Theriault and Jeff Fultz all ADVANCE to the 45th Snowball Derby

4:28
LAP 49 – WHITE. Kelley pulling away

4:28
Lap 49 – Prunty has dropped back slightly.

4:28
LAP 48 – Prunty with a phenomenal drive the last two laps is on the back bumper of Fultz

4:27
LAP 46 – Campbell, Theriault and Fultz are nose-to-tail for second through fourth, but it seems pointless for any of them to pull out of line at the moment and cause an issue

4:27

Second through fourth with four to go. (SPEED51.com Photo)

4:27
LAP 45 – FIVE TO GO – Prunty is the only one outside of the transfer zone with a shot it seems. He has four carlengths to gain on Fultz

4:27
Top Ten – Paul Kelley, Brian Campbell, Austin Theriault, Jeff Fultz, Dennis Prunty, Landon Cassill, Anderson Bowen, Kyle Grissom, Cole Powell and Kenzie Ruston.

4:26

4:26
LAP 44- Kelley seems to have suddenly squirrelled away a little, Campbell is behind by five carlengths with Theriault and Fultz right behind him.

4:25
LAP 40 – Prunty seems better than Fultz on corner enterance, but Prunty seems to lose that gain on corner exit

4:25

Separation from fourth to fifth. (SPEED51.com Photo)

4:25
Lap 39 – Dennis Schoenfeld and Roger Reuse have been racing very hard for the 13th position.

4:25
LAP 39 – Kelley has never really gotten away from the field, Campbell seems content to ride behind him at the moment, knowing there is no need to advance his starting position just one spot versus the possibility of not making the race at all

4:24
LAP 36 – Cassill seems to be losing his handle, he has fallen well back of Prunty who is the only other car in the zip code of the four transfer cars at the moment

4:24
Lap 35 – Junior Niedecken is off the pace and pulling down pit road.

4:24

Right front flat on Anderson Bowen’s car. (SPEED51.com Photo)

4:24
LAP 34 – The top four – Kelley, Campbell, Theriault, and Fultz have about three carlengths back to Prunty and the rest of the field.

4:23
Lap 34 – Spencer Davis has pulled into the pit area.

4:23
LAP 33 – Fultz trying to get some more cushion on the transfer zone, putting pressure on Theriault for third.

4:23
Lap 31 – The top three – Paul Kelley, Brian Campbell, Austin Theriault and Jeff Fultz, have broken away.

4:23

Dennis Prunty gets by Landon Cassill for fifth. (SPEED51.com Photo)

4:23
LAP 31 – Cassill nearly lost it trying to get a run on Prunty down the front. He’s trying the inside again now in Turn Three

4:22
LAP 30 – Fultz is now the fourth and final transfer spot. Prunty fifth, Cassill fell back to sixth but is back on the attack.

4:22
Lap 29 – Landon Cassill’s car appears to be tight.

4:22
LAP 29 – Just as we say that Fultz gets around Cassill and Prunty follows through

4:22
LAP 28 – Prunty was making a charge, but has been sliding loose off of the turns the last few laps and is losing a little ground.

4:22
Lap 28 – Ron McDonald is pulling down pit road.

4:21
There is a further gap back to Kyle Grissom, who currently runs in the eighth position. Cole Powell and Kenzie Ruston round out the top ten runners.

4:21

Leaders come flying by. (SPEED51.com Photo)

4:21
LAP 26 – Campbell and Theriault now opening a little gap between Cassill. Cassill, in the fourth and final transfer spot, now has Fultz all over him

4:20
Lap 25 – Paul Kelley currently leads Brian Campbell, Austin Theriault and Landon Cassill in the transfer spots. Just behind them are Jeff Fultz, Dennis Prunty and Anderson Bowen.

4:20
LAP 24 – Kelley has led every lap but he only has two carlengths in hand over Campbell

4:20
LAP 23 – Prunty clears Bowen for sixth

4:20
LAP 20 – Bowen throws his car into Turn Three, almost clears Prunty but Prunty keeping just enough inside of Bowen for Bowen to not be able to clear.

4:19
Lap 20 – Anderson Bowen’s car looks to be very tight coming off turn two. He is fighting for the fifth position.

4:19

4:19
LAP 19 – Prunty under Bowen for sixth

4:19
LAP 18 – Bowen trying to get some grip on the outside lane to get past Fultz for fifth. Dennis Prunty has joined the top-six.

4:18
Allen Karnes parked his car at his hauler, got out, said nothing to anyone and went into the hauler.

4:18
LAP 17 – Theriault again putting all sorts of pressure on Campbell for second. Campbell looks tight at the moment

4:18
LAP 15 – Kelley is committed to the bottom right now, Campbell running half a groove higher trying to keep pace for the lead
4:18
Lap 15 – Stephen McCurley is in the pits.

4:18
Watson’s crew had to go back to the hauler to get a replacement tire. Putting it on now. Engine refired and is back out.

4:17
Lap 14 – Ron McDonald is about to be lapped.

4:17

4:15
LAP 7 – Fultz under and by McCurley for fifth

2012 PASS South Champion Kyle Grissom is another driver with a major accomplishment who is in this Last Chance race.

4:08
On the first two rows alone, a mutli-time ARCA CRA winner (Campbell), a World Crown winner (Kelley), a PASS & ACT winner this season (Theriault), and a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver (Cassill).

This Snowball Derby Last Chance race is full of drivers will plenty of career accomplishments. There is a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver (Landon Cassil), a multi-time NASCAR Touring Series champion (Jeff Fultz), a driver who has podium finishes in the last two Oxford 250 races (Austin Theriault), a pair of Midwestern racing hotshoes (Brian Campbell and Dennis Prunty) and a score of other dirvers who have plenty of career victories and championships between them.

Those accomplishments mean little this afternoon. Only four of these drivers will gain entry in this year’s Snowball Derby.

Daniel Hemric just ran his fastest lap of practice, but he’s only 27th as his team is in the fortunate position of only having to worry about tomorrow’s race versus today’s Last Chancer.

12:48
With just a dozen moments remaining in practice, the track is a busy, busy, busy place. There are two dozen cars on the track and its making for some tense moments are cars are ducking on and off the track.

12:36
TECH: Still a relatively quiet Snowflake Qualifying Tech as Bobby Reuse, Rusty Sanford, Cody Coughlin, Chase Miller, and Daniel Hemric have all cleared.

12:33
Carlson’s car was very slow yesterday and he wants to avoid any possible carnage in the Last Chance race. If he feels after practice that he can not run well enough to compete for the transfer spots, he will go home.
12:33
Comment From Steve
why s carlson not sure if he is racing the last chance?

12:32
We are now to the point of another scheduled break in practice to allow crossovers. There will be a final 30 minutes or less of practice right after this break. The pressure is on for any team needing to be in the last chance race because this will serve as their final chance to fine tune their car for the last chance event.

There’s also pressure on the teams qualifies for the Derby because it is their final chance to fine tune their cars for the biggest race of the entire week here at Five Flags Speedway.

As a result, A.J. Frank will NOT compete in the Last Chance race today and his Derby is done.

There are two Snowball Derby provisionals available for those competitors who placed within the top ten of the Blizzard Super Late Model Series point standings. Those will go to Logan Boyett and Mike Garvey. Either driver could enter the Last Chance race to possibly better their starting positions slightly, but neither will elect to do that.

“We aren’t going to run the Last Chance race,” Boyett told Speed51.com. “We know that our car will race well, but it wasn’t so good for qualifying. This is what happens when the driver gets what he wants. They let me learn that the hard way.”

When asked if he was going to run the Last Chance race, Garvey was more direct.

“Nope, Nope, Nope,” was Garvey’s answer.

Steve Wallace is also eligible for a provisional into the Snowball Derby. He won the race in 2004.
