Hoping Todd Jones has a good run. I watched Riethmeyer cut his teeth in the ARTS trucks in Texas about 10 years ago… Dude’s got skills! He won a Romco Super Late Championship, All American Driver Challenge and has some championships in midgets. And he’s been in a hand full of Nascar truck races.

10:05
Yes, it cleared an hour ago. We will try to post the official Snowball Derby times one more time before we sign off this evening, but in the interim you can scroll down to the 7:35 PM post, you will see the times now.

10:03
We can confirm that Oliver did not have the ride in place til this morning. We’re not sure about Port City part as we have the Reuse’s cars listed as a different chassis, but based off what we’ve heard about the #89 car’s age and disuse in the last few years, it wouldn’t surprise us to hear that it’s a different chassis than the primary Reuse racing machines.
10:03
Comment From kentucky fan

Hey I just heard Dillon Oliver qual. 19th in a ten year old Port City chassis. For the Snowball Derby. They told me he didn’t even have the ride till Friday morning. Can yall confirm. That’s amazing. Go Dillon Go.

Still waiting clean up on the frontstrech to get rolling again.
10:00
We have been corrected that the #13 in the wreck was actually ian Webster, not Kevin Peel. There’s two thirteens at the track. Webster’s #13 was green, two of racer’s worst superstitions rolled into one.

I heard the announcers mention how modifieds went away for awhile and then Mr. Bryant brought them back. I believe the first or the second modified race during snowball derby weekend after we came back we had well over 50 cars show up. That was my first race ever at 5 flags.

9:34
LAP 5 – Nester by a carlength as the #5 of Donald Crocker pressures polesitter Melvin for third.
9:33
LAP 3 – RESTART – Nester gets another good jump and clears ruble into one. Melvin also clear in third.
9:32

Good luck to all the Texas Modified racers. They’re starting towards the back but they wont finish there. Watch that 39 car with Mark driving and JD calling the shots.

Some more info about a handful of drivers in today’s race:

Brian Nester (2nd) won four races on the USA Modified Series circuit this year, which runs mainly in the upper Midwest.

Mike Maddox (5th) is a former crew chief to 1989 Snowball winner Rick Crawford.

Jeff Letson (6th) has five career victories in the Southern Superstars Short Track Series, a pretty tough late model tour that races in Alabama.

Mark Chrudimsky (16th) is a driver who has pretty much competed at every asphalt track in the state of Texas in one machine or another.

Bradley Riethmeyer (17th) is the 2004 champ of the old ROMCO Super Late Model Series, which was the biggest thing in Texas for a few years.

Eldon Zacek, Jr. (24th) is a multi-time winner in the Rolling Thunder Modified Series, the only active series in the Carolinas that races the type of Modifieds we see tonight.

There’s also Augie Grill in tonight’s field. We don’t think he needs much of an introduction past “2-time Snowball Derby champion”

Steve Wallace told us they still have not diagnosed the problem with his #5 Super LM. The team is planning on tearing apart that racecar to ifhe to find the problem. They plan on replacing the distributor, the coil, the wiring harness, the fuel cell and more. They also plan on blowing the lines because a fuel issue is also something they suspect.

We noticed a few Pro Late Model teams in the pits working on their engines. Both Erik Jones and Daniel Hemric were doing so, in particular. Jones’ team had associates from McGunegill Engine Performance working on the #4. Turns out both cars were using 1.6 rocker arms that actually were read in Snowflake inspection today as 1.69, making them illegal. According to MEP, it was a manufacturer error from the rocker arm builder, Scorpion. Hemric’s and Jones’ teams are changing out their rocker arms as we speak. Both Jones and Hemric told 51 that they are glad they had their rockers checked tonight to avoid issues in Snowflake tech tomorrow.

Cale Gale truned a 16.335 last year almost got the overall fast time!

5:41
The track officially recognizes Cale Gale’s 16.335 as the SLM track record, both because of some of the rules that were in place when Balough ran a 16.33 back in 1980 and because electronic timing only went to hundredths of a second back then, so Balough’s 16.33 could have been a 16.335 or a 16.337 for all we know.

Could you re-post the Snowball qualifying order, please?

5:38
TECH UPDATE: Ricky Brooks has told us Danny Bagwell will receive both laps in qualifying because he was right on the 10-minute deadline.
5:36
Teams are pushing the limit all week so when they get the car taped up and set up for qualifying, they may go over the tolerances. Also, cars with minor tech issues are allowed on the track during practice so that the team may be allowed to “work” the issues out of the day during practice day.

Qualifying is the first time this weekend times count towards something official, so it is essential to make sure the playing field is even.

TECH UPDATE: Donnie Wilson, Hunter Robbins, Mason Mingus, Bubba Pollard, Ben Kennedy, Matt Smith and Casey Smith have all passed tech.
5:25
In tonight’s qualifying session, all teams who passed tech with no issues will get two laps. If they do not pass their first attempt at tech, they will get one more chance. If they fail that mulligan tech check, then they will only have one lap to qualify.
5:25
Comment From David

Why do some cars get two qualifying laps and others just one?

Balough was driving a machine referred to as the “Batmobile” both because of its paint scheme and – if we are being generous – “unique and unusual” body. This was during an era where souped cars and soaked tires were commonplace and odd modifications often allowed within a less-defined tech sheet.

2:38
We just talked to Ricky Turner, crew chief on the #9 of Chase Elliott, about why all the crew chiefs elected to strap on sticker tires this last run. The 51 crew was a little surprised by the sheer volume of teams that elected to do this considering this was pretty much in the heat of the day.

Turner said he didn’t anticipate the track tempature changing that much between now and qualifying and downplayed that the new tire compound had these teams any more nervous for sticker runs in these final practice sessions. He simply felt that this was the time teams were the most comfortable with their setups after two days of tuning.

Turner also said that Elliott’s car was phenomenal on long runs and that they decided this morning to buy an extra set of stickers for the mock run they just completed.

2:36
Steve Wallace has been fighting an engine skipping problem the entire day. Dewaine McGunegill made a carburetor adjustment and it fixed the problem. Steven told us, “I just wanna make the the race on time because I think we have a pretty good racecar.”

From the pits, you can feel the tension and anxiety mounting during this session. A good long run car may not help you if you can’t be one of the quick cars in qualifying tonight. This is the most intense, important practice of the week thus far right here.
1:17
We have received information that these sticker runs are all mock qualifying runs. The new tires have made teams a little nervous and unsure. So there are making these runs to gain a little more knowledge on how the car will react in qualifying.
1:16
Josh Hamner just shot to the top of the charts with a 16.684. He is the second car to break into the 16.6 second bracket this week.

The first “Tough Guy” award went to Californian Derek Thorn for just making a 36-straight-hour drive from California to Pensacola to this event.  He had to raise enough money from fans via PayPal just to support the trip.

When the 51 staff went to vote for Thursday’s winner, it was a landslide in the young Californian’s favor again.  Thorn’s team  went through two motors yesterday in first Snowball Derby practice.  They then spent all night putting in a new, but borrowed, Hamner Racing Engines power plant to practice with on Friday.

For his and his team’s gritty efforts on Thursday to overcome the engine problems, they win the Five Star “Tough Guy Award” for a second-straight day earning another $100 gift certificate from Five Star Race Car Bodies.

Some notes from this mornings Drivers Meeting:

Practice starts at 10:00a.m., for both Snowball and Snowflake cars. This will be the final Practice where both Super Late Models and Pro Late Models will Practice together.

At 1:00p.m., the FINAL Practice for the Snowball Derby cars (Super Late Models only) will start and run for 60 minutes with a small break at 1:30p.m., to allow for patrons to cross the track.

At 2:00p.m., the Snowflake 100 cars (Pro Late Models) are scheduled to have their first Practice by themselves. However there is a Funeral Service scheduled for the same time next door, so Snowflake Only Practice will be delayed for approximately 20-30 minutes.

The drivers meeting has just concluded.  The big story of last years pole day was who got penalized for tech infractions.  Several drivers were docked a lap and in some cases both laps of qualifying.
9:14
Cale Gale set the track record at last years Derby with a blistering lap of 16.335.  It looks as though it’s going to be extremely difficult to replace that record tonight.  Lap times in practice have been relatively slower compared to previous years.  David Rodgers did bust off a lap of a 16.638 yesterday.  He had the only car that ran a lap in the 16.6 second bracket.
