That will conclude today’s (or yesterday’s on the East and Central coast) coverage from Five Flags Speedway. Friday’s Trackside Now coverage will kick off mid-morning on the day where we will qualify for the Snowball Derby and run features for Modifieds and Super Stocks.

Thanks to Paragon for being the presenting sponsor of today’s race, the Five Flags staff for being hospitable hosts, and of course you the fans for tuning in. We hope to see a lot of you here tomorrow night on the grounds or at the least on Trackside Now.

Good night!

We’ve spent part of today tracking down this question and according to track promoter Tim Bryant, the answer is this:
Tom Dawson, the original promoter of the Snowball Derby, used to promote a race in Ohio called The Snowball before moving down South. Even though it doesn’t seem to fit the location, the “Snowball” stuck to the event and it’s been that way ever since.
Dawson is the man whose name is now attached to the winner’s trophy for this event, though it was first named the Dawson Snowball trophy just ten years ago.
Hope this piece of interesting trivia can serve as a thanks to everyone who stayed up late tonight with us here on Speed51.com

Where/how did they get the name Snowball Derby – what I’m asking is why did they name it Snowball Derby in Florida? Thank you.

Steve Carlson is possibly the second only to Dick Trickle for the all time greatest short track driver in history…..it is a shame he has never run the derby

Gary Goodwin, 2011 track Bomber champ, sits now on the outside pole.
6:41
We have not heard one way or another about whether Mercer has officially retired or not, but he has not competed in a single 2011 race that we’re aware of. Mercer has 22 Snowball starts (including last year) with the 2005 victory and four other runner-up finishes.

6:31
No, Midwest racing legend Steve Carlson has never run the Snowball Derby. Hard to believe that “never” and “Steve Carlson” belong in the same sentence when talking about racing and career accomplishmenets.

Has Steve Carlson ever ran the Snowball before?

6:15

4:40
There is a new, slightly different tire compound here in 2011 compared to last years Derby, which is taking a while for some teams to get used to and simply may not have as much out-of-the-box speed.
4:40
Comment From Jimmy Spencer

What are the racers accounting the slight slow down in lap times to?

4:38
Unfortunately, the scoring today did not distinguish between Super cars and Pro cars. There will be one-division only practices tomorrow in which it will be easier to see how the competition stacks up in both late models.

Do they impound the cars after qualifying?

Ross Kenseth just pulled down pit road during this caution with a flat right front which was down to the rim.
3:38
Caution is out for Darin Matthews who spun in turn two. There is not damage to his car.
3:38
We asked Mason Mingus what happened and said a car was looking to come down pit road and the shot up the banking thus putting them in the wall. They have a backup car and will take it out, but it’s not as good as the primary car.

3:38
Comment From Ian

Augie still 112?

3:37
37 cars started last year’s Snowball Derby and a few times they’ve let 40 cars run. 36 were in the Snowflake last season. Biggest reason to cap around there is simply space. It’s only a half-mile facility. More cars isn’t always better on these tight bullrings.
3:37
Comment From Wesley_Motorsports

Has the Derby or Snowflake ever started with more than 34 cars? If not, why haven’t they tried to run NASCAR style 43 cars…

We just talked to Stephen Nasse as we saw him heading down to the tech line. They put stickers on their last run but have had issues getting the tread width to meet specs and Nasse sighed as he saw it registering as too wide again. Overall though Nasse’s pretty happy and they’re going to go straight from tech back on the track.

The concession stand located right next to Speed51’s backstretch location has just baked what we can presume from the smell is a fresh batch of cotton candy. We may have to follow our journalistic duty and sample some of the confection. And of course, just to be impartial, deep fried OREOs will be tested too.

The stand is at a good location too as all the drivers are ordering hot dogs and chili fries while they wait for a chance to look at the times posted on the tech building.

2:38
Earlier this morning, we said Randy Gentry described his car as “junk”. They’re slowly getting there now according to Gentry, but they’re still on old tires. How old? The tires they’ve been running on today were actually the tires Gentry had bolted onto his car at the North South Shootout at Caraway.
2:37
Johanna Long is happy with her car on long runs, but says they need to find speed on shorter ones. The are searching for speed for qualifying because Long says she wants to start near the front.

2:19
Erik Jones has just informed Speed51 that he will not be going out the rest of the day.
2:18
The top five in this practice remains unchanged.
2:17
Speaking of Thorn, he just went out on track for the first time since changing motors. The new motor is very different than the previous and lacks a bit of pure speed, so the team is going to be making major adjustments to the machine to compensate.
2:15
Derek Thorn’s trip is right around the 2,100 mile mark from Bakersfield, CA and we’re 99% sure thus the longest. The Canadians (specifically the Ontarians) of Cole Powell and Jerry Artuso actually have a fairly straight shot south down I-65 and treked about 1,400 miles.
2:15
Comment From San Diego Dave

What team made the longest haul?

2:12
VanDoorn added that he and his crew chief (himself) aren’t getting along at all today.
2:12
Derrick Griffin is struggling to get his car to turn so they’re making a front suspension change. Johnny VanDoorn is fairly happy but still thinks they can improve on the car on the exit of the corner.
2:11
Powell ran over 100 laps on his first set of tires but have just bolted on fresh ones and the Canadian will make another go of learning Five Flags.

Comment From Steven Blakesley

Derek Thorn is running a 9:1 tour motor this weekend and is probably one of the only guys doing so. He gives up a little bit on horsepower to the Supers but probably will benefit on tire wear. What do you think?

1:31
We will certainly do all we can.

Quite a few of our readers are asking this. The only difference of note is all under the hood. Pros run two-barrel or crate engine combinations wheras the Supers are allowed to run a little more distinctive and unique engine combinations.

Veteran David Rogers told us he had a “panic” after his first run on the racetrack today. He was coming up to speed when his #11 Super LM just shut off. He coasted in the pits and the car still had oil pressure, but then he noticed the car had no power. They found that the “kill-switch” on the car went bad and it cut all power to the car. David says he’s breathing a little easier now especially since the car was comfortable on the next few runs. He is planning to make a mock-qualifying run later this afternoon.

Check out this cool article written by our friends at the Pensacola News Journal:

In auto racing, physics is everything.

The science dictates car and track design, racing strategy, even tire selection. During the course of a race, drivers have to contend with all sorts of forces exerted on their bodies as they maneuver behind, beside and, hopefully, in front of other drivers.

A study conducted by the University of West Florida Society of Physics Students, in conjunction with the News Journal and Pensacola racer Johanna Long’s Panhandle Motorsports team, has shed light on the complexities of a sport that, to many, may seem like one long left turn.

No, Clay’s car was pretty destroyed at the World Crown and we have heard from a few people here that the car was not repairable in time.

We just saw Boris Jurkovic in the pits and he is still glowing after capturing the biggest racing victory of his career in October, winning the Winchester 400. He said if he goes on to win this weekend in the Derby, he must as well just retire since these are the two biggest races in his book.

A couple of clarifications on today’s practice sessions: They will mix Super Late Model and Pro Late Model practices all day today. They will practice in half-hour rounds with practice ceasing for a few minutes to allow traffic in. There will be a complete half-hour break from 12:30-1:00 for lunch.

Drivers have been asked with so many cars on the ground to both be patient in the pits and to travel in the same direction as the cars on the track in the pits

To further help the traffic flow, only 15 cars will allow to be on the track at the same time today.
