There has been plenty of action here at the track this morning.   The driver's meeting is happening now, but the big exit of the haulers has taken place.

Here for the Snowall Derby, all the haulers are taken out of the track to allow the fans better viewing of the track.

Comment From Buzz

Great job with the coverage all week long, it has been exceptional. I understand everything about the problems with last nights radio broadcast. Is there no way to get on an old reliable landline?

9:42

We have two back-up plans in case we have trouble again today.   Hopefully that will curb problems, but with technology, unless you are willing to spend a few million like ESPN or SPEED does at NASCAR tracks, sometimes these issues happen.   We appreciate the compliment and the patience from everyone.

9:44

The radio broadcast will start at 12:00pm Central / 1:00pm Eastern, two hours before the green flag drops.   It will be broadcast live on RaceTalkRadio.comand if you are at the track, on frequency 454.5000, courtesy of our good friends at Racing Electronics.

10:09

Tech cleared last night for the Snowflake 100 and Augie Grill was named the official winner.   Make sure to check out the Trackside Now coverage of the whole day's action (link is on the front page).

There were not any fights that we were aware of.

10:10

The morning Church service is about to start on the front stretch.   Fans can come down onto the track and sit to listen to the service, something that happens every year here at Five Flags Speedway.

what is the weather forcast?

10:25

It is supposed to be partly cloudy and get up to around the mid 50s by green flag.   Weather is supposed to move into the area tomorrow, but not today, so we do not see any reason why this race won't get in today.

10:39

There will be a number change this morning.  Danny Bagwell has turned his #10 into a #70 as to not conflict with the #10 of polesitter Joanna Long.

10:42

Augie Grill and his team have been relaxed all week long and that theme continued this morning.  After most teams had removed their haulers from the infield, Grill's toterhome and trailer were one of the last to leave.  In fact, the team even needed to be prodded along by the page over the PA system to be reminded to move it in a timely manner.

10:42

For those of you who are at the track today, you can listen to the track frequency at 461.200 on your scanners.

Any preliminary Counts on the Best Appearing Car Vote???

10:45

We aren't going to release that information until after the voting concludes at 12pm Central.   We will post the info as well as announce it over the radio before the Snowball Derby.

10:45

With rising energy prices, there have been plenty of pain at the pump for everyone in recent years.  But a fill-up at the racetrack is really painful.  The fuel prices here this week are $8/gallon for 110 octane fuel and $9/gallon for 112 octane.  Ouch!

10:47

Teams were told in the drivers' meeting that if they stop on the track to draw a caution today and then drive away, they will get a two-lap penalty.

10:48

We understand that Matt Kenseth, father of Ross Kenseth who is starting on the outside front row, is not here yet.   His plane is stuck in Wichita, Kansas.   He has been in communication with the team to find out what time the race starts and is hoping to get here on time.

10:48

Comment From Marc

Go get em Ross, from a very cold Wisconsin! Thanks for the coverage.

10:48

We talked to Justin Drawdy this morning and he tells us that the back-up car that he is using today is just as good as the primary car that he wrecked in practice on Thursday.

Standing around waiting for this morning's drivers' meeting was a lot like standing outside of school waiting for the opening bell.  Many drivers broke off into small packs and socialized while waiting.  We saw Ryan Lawler, Steven Wallace and Brian Ickler all hanging out together.  Bobby Gill and David Stremme were in discussions as well.  We also saw Johanna Long and David Rogers talking for awhile.  Were any deals being made for today?  Maybe... but it was mostly just small talk among a group of racers.

10:51

Everyone made roll call this morning for the driver's meeting, nobody will be sent to the rear of the field for missing the meeting.

Comment From Guest

10:51

Comment From Guest

I guess mike missed the world crown 300 where augie had them coverd until he broke

10:52

The last big rig to leave from the infield was the Hoosier tire rig.   We believe the last car rig to leave was Jack Smith's rig.   The officials were having trouble initially finding the driver to move it.

10:53

Ryan Lawler admitted to us this morning that he was pretty nervous about getting into the starting field of the Snowball Derby yesterday before the Last Chance race.  He did race his #49 Stanley Smith-owned Super Late Model in though and now tells us that he thinks they'll be fine for today.

10:54

Jeff Choquette is "real happy" with his car today.  He does caution though that the track can really change, so things are a bit of an unknown for the start of the race.

10:55

Kyle Busch's crew chief Boss Suss has quite a history here at the Snowball Derby.  He was involved with Country Joe Racing's assaults on this event earlier this decade with drivers Kevin Cywinski and Joey Miller.  Cywinski nearly won this race with Suss as his crew chief.  The CJR entries for the Snowball Derby were noted for their special paint schemes just for this event.

10:59

One very interesting thing that came out of this morning's drivers' meeting was that teams were told by Ricky Brooks that no burnouts are allowed after the race.  He explained to drivers that if they finish in the top three that they are to stop at the start-finish line.  They are not to do a burnout, doughnut or even turn the car around on the track.  If they do, they will be disqualified.  Brooks did tell drivers that they could do all of the burnouts that they wanted after they clear tech.

"You'll be doing your burnouts at 11 o'clock tonight," said Kyle Busch.

isnt seth holbrook crew cheif kyle's car?

11:02

Maine's Seth Holbrook is here working on the Kyle Busch Motorsports cars this weekend, but Bond Suss is the full-time crew chief for the team.

Holbrook worked with a number of different drivers as a consultant this year including PASS North race winner Chris Staples, Oxford Plains Speedway Late Model driver Tim Brackett and ACT Late Mode driver Joey Laquerre.  He has also had plenty of success through the year working with Maine racing legend Mike Rowe.

11:06

We have had plenty of viewers for our Trackside Now coverage this week including some well-known racing people.  One of those guys has been USARacing Pro Cup champion Clay Rogers, who has been asking questions about Bobby Gill using our interactive feature.

This morning, we asked Gill if he had any questions for Rogers - who might be reading along today as well.  Gill wanted to know how Rogers' infant daughter was doing this morning.  "How's the kid?" he asked.

But Gill warned us that we probably shouldn't post his question until after 1pm since Rogers isn't know for being a morning person.

11:06

Comment From Dave

Good luck to Brian Campbell and his Perfect Circle Racing team today!!!!

11:06

Last night, we had nearly 10,000 readers for our Trackside Now coverage of the Snowflake 100.  Thank you for tuning in!

11:08

Dennis Schoenfeld needed to earn a starting spot through the Last Chance race yesterday, but that doesn't mean you should count him out today.  The #43 team reports that their car is very good on long runs.  Schoenfeld is not known for being a great qualifier typically, but he is exceptionally good at getting through traffic and being around at the end of long races.

11:11

We caught up with ACT Late Model driver Joey Doiron this morning.  Doiron headed down from Maine and is working with the #51 BDI racing team of Bobby Gill this week.  He's very impressed with his first Derby trip, but told us that he thinks it is harder to win his own tour's marquee race, The Milk Bowl at Thunder Road Speedbowl (VT) than it would be the win the Derby.

Doiron points out that the Milk Bowl's three 50-lap segments, with a full field inversion between the segments, are grueling.

But Doiron cautions that his opinion is simply just an opinion.

"Then again, I'm not racing here today," said Doiron.

11:12

Pace car speed today is 30 miles per hour.  Ricky Brooks told teams in the drivers' meeting that as long as they didn't drag race down pit road, used their heads and didn't pass any other cars on pit road, they would be fine.

11:13

Teams were told in their drivers' meeting that there would be no limit on the number of Green White Checkered attempts if needed at the conclusion of the day's race.  That led to a humorous question by Kyle Busch.

"Where's the nearest hospital?" Busch asked.

11:14

Comment From Guest

Who is Mike Garvey there helping

11:14

Mike Garvey was helping the #41 team of Chris Davidson, but that team didn't qualify for the Snowball Derby.  This morning, he was in the drivers' meeting and we saw him giving some pointers to Hunter Robbins.

what time will todays radio coverage start?

11:15

Radio coverage is planned to start around Noon CT - in about 45 minutes from now.  We'll have a pre-race show, pre-race festivities and then lead into the race itself at 2pm CT.

11:18

Teams were told in the drivers' meeting that unless the track is totally block on the last lap, drivers will be racing back to the checkered flag.  If the track is blocked, a red flag will likely be thrown.

There were many questions as to possible situations on how that could unfold.  Finally, an impatient Bobby Gill paraphrased the rule to everyone.

"We're racing back to the checkered flag and that's all that there is," Gill said.  "It's on!"

11:18

We don't think that Mike Garvey is working with Ryan Crane anymore.

11:21

Ricky Brooks is holding an extended technical inspection before the race for all teams.  He is going to have his tech staff actually get under the cars to check things out and make sure that teams haven't "done anything stupid" since passing tech earlier in the week.  Brooks really wants to make sure that the race isn't won or lost in tech this year and emphasized that to teams this morning.

"We don't want to disqualify anyone," said Brooks.

11:22

There have been a few questions about the action from yesterday.   Make sure to check out all of the coverage on Trackside Now throughout the weekend as well as the videos by visiting the Speed 51 Snowball Derby index:

http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/Snowball_index.html

11:24

Since the field was shorted from 39 to 37 cars, an extra $2,500 that would have gone to the final two finishers under that purse structure will now go to the race winner.  The winner's purse now stands at $22,500.

Promoter Tim Bryant told teams in the drivers' meeting that the decision to put the field at 37 instead of 39 was made before the race week and it is being done because there isn't enough space on pit road.

Would be good in current economy if they would have spread that purse throughout the field rather than just race winner. Good luck to the Wisconsin drivers today.

There aren't going to be any New England racers in the field today, but there are several milling around the track watching the show.

We've already heard from ACT Late Modeler Joey Doiron, but that tour is also represented by Joey Laquerre and Jay Laquerre who are here today as well.

PASS Modified driver Troy Morse is also here.  So is PASS Modified car owner Dave Weir who fielded cars for Andy Shaw this season.  PASS Sportsman and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Pro Series (Super Late Model) ace Dan McKeage has also been spotted at the track.

A few of our friends from North of the Border are here as well.  We've seen Maritimes Super Late Model ace Lonnie Sommerville and also heard the Rollie MacDonald is here too.

2:24

Stephan McCurley appears to have a flat tire after contact with John Bolen.

2:24

Stephan McCurley has made it to pit road.

2:25

It is the right front tire flat on Stephan McCurley's car as his crew is changing it now.

2:25

Up front, Kyle Busch leads Augie Grill, Casey Smith, Johanna Long and Ross Kenseth at lap 17.

2:25

Ross Kenseth has worked his way by Johanna Long for position, bringing Eddie Mercer with him.

2:26

David Rogers is slow on the track.

2:26

David Rogers was able to turn off the track in turns one and two to the infield while slow.

2:27

We are still green flag racing at lap 22.

2:27

Through the field, we have seen some cars bouncing off each other a bit.

2:28

The leaders are now into lapped traffic, which should get a bit interesting.

2:28

27 laps are in the books.   Kyle Busch leads Augie Grill, Casey Smith, Ross Kenseth and Eddie Mercer.

2:29

Augie Grill has taken the lead from Kyle Busch.

2:30

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 31

Gary Helton and Bobby Gill had trouble in turns three and four.   We are not sure what happened, but it appeared Brian Campbell was slow and might have caused some drivers to check up.

2:31

Brian Campbell is on pit road.

2:31

Top five: Augie Grill, Kyle Busch, Casey Smith, Ross Kenseth, Eddie Mercer

2:32

Bobby Gill has made his way onto pit road as well as Gary Helton.

2:32

It is hard to tell, but it doesn't look like any of those cars have any visable damage.

2:33

Danny Bagwell and Ryan Lawler also pitted during this yellow.

2:34

GREEN FLAG

2:35

Augie Grill still has the lead.

2:37

Under caution, we observed from the tower something dangling from the left rear of Steve Wallace's car.   It appears to be the plug and rope used in the pits on the fuel overflow.   It might cause a problem since it appears to still be in there.   It could cause a vapor lock.

2:38

The top three drivers, Augie Grill, Kyle Busch and Casey Smith, have pulled away from the field a bit.   Ross Kenseth is fourth with Eddie Mercer fifth.

2:38

We are at lap 49.

2:39

Gary Helton was the lucky dog during that last yellow.   Even though he was near the wreck, he wasn't the cause, so he was able to get his lap back.   Bobby Gill appears to be a lap down.

2:39

Actually, Gary Helton is slow, so he has appeared to have gone down the lap again.

2:43

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 60

Jeff Choquette, Augie Grill, Brian Campbell and Scott Carlson were a few drivers that tangled in turns three and four.

2:44

Johanna Long, Brian Scott, Chase Elliott, David Stremme, Tyler Millwood, Ryan Lawler, Heath Hindman, Hunter Robbins, Randy Gentry and others are on pit road.

2:46

Jeff Choquette's car is heavily damaged on the right side door and there is a brake fire on his car.

2:47

Top five: Augie Grill, Kyle Busch, Ross Kenseth, Eddie Mercer, Cale Gale

2:48

Jeff Choquette is out of his car and has thrown some of his safety equipment.   He is frustrated after having high hopes coming into this weekend's event.

2:49

Jeff Choquette is done for the day as the car is being pushed off pit road in into the infield.

2:49

AUgie Grill's hood is a bit bent up, but his car looks ok to continue without a problem.

2:49

GREEN FLAG: LAP 69

2:50

Randy Gentry and Bobby Gill have both moved their way by the leader to get their lap back.

2:51

2:51

2:53

Josh Hamner, Steve Wallace and Bobby Gill are all in the pits.

2:53

Brian Campbell, David Rogers and Brian Campbell are all on pit road now as well.

2:55

There is one  lap  to go for the restart.

2:56

GREEN FLAG: LAP 78

2:57

Augie Grill still leads, but there is a lot of jumbling through the field.

2:57

It appeared Ryan Sieg scraped the inside wall going into turn one, but he has continued on.

2:59

Casey Smith has worked his way around Eddie Mercer for the  third position.

2:59

At lap 88, Augie Grill still leads Kyle Busch, Casey Smith, Eddie Mercer and Ryan Sieg

3:00

Casey Smith has worked his way to second and is trying to chase down Augie Grill.

3:01

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 92

Hunter Robbins went around in turn four within a group of cars that had been racing hard for the last five laps or so.   He has driven away and continues on.

3:02

Pit stops are going to occur here.

3:03

Augie Grill, Kyle Busch, Eddie Mercer, Tyler Millwood, Brian Ickler, Just Drawdy, Scott Hantz and others are on the pit road.

3:03

Augie Grill appeared to have some issues during his pit stop and lost a ton of spots on exit.

3:04

Bobby Gill will have to drop to the rear of the field for pulling up to pit too early.

3:04

Top five: Casey Smith, Ryan Sieg, Brian Scott, David Stremme, Grant Enfinger

3:05

Augie Grill is listed in 25th now after some of the leaders pitted.

3:06

This could get interesting with a lot of fast cars with new tires behind many of the drivers up front.

3:06

GREEN FLAG: LAP 99

3:06

Casey Smith is still leading.

3:07

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 101

Hunter Robbins spun on the back stretch and Bubba Pollard just piled in as he couldn't get stopped.   A few other cars were also involved.

3:08

Brian Ickler has rear end damage.

3:08

Bubba Pollard is out of his car and it will require the rollback to get it off the track.   Tough break for Pollard as the end of his racing season just hasn't gone his way.

3:08

Hunter Robbins has pulled his car behind the wall.

3:12

Top five: Casey Smith, Ryan Sieg, Brian Scott, David Stremme, Grant Enfinger

3:13

GREEN FLAG: LAP 109

3:14

Casey Smith still leads, but Ryan Sieg looks like he wants the top spot.

3:14

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 111

Augie Grill has backed into the turn three wall hard.

3:15

It appeared Justin Drawdy and Augie Grill got together, causing the issue.

3:15

Augie Grill was able to drive away, but the backend is heavily damaged.

3:16

Grant Enfinger is not a favorite of the officials.   They are claiming he is trying to get a few spots every caution that he shouldn't.

3:16

John Bolen has pulled on and off pit road, but pit road was closed, so he will get a penalty.

3:17

Augie Grill has been on and off pit road.   He appears like he will try to come back down pit road and try not to lose a lap.

3:17

Justin Drawdy has also been on and off pit road.

3:18

Augie Grill's rear end has been beat back into place by his team, but it is still pretty wrinkled and there are bars where they normally aren't supposed to be.

3:18

Bobby Allison has made his way up here to the booth.   We will try to get him on the radio shortly.

Kyle Busch has just worked his way back up to the fifth position.

3:27

Brian Campbell is back on pit road.

140 laps complete.

3:28

Augie Grill, who is at least a lap down, has worked his way to pit road.

3:28

Augie Grill appears to be done and will not win his third SNowball Derby.

3:30

We are at the halfway point of the event (lap 150).   Casey Smith leads Ryan Sieg, Brian Scott, Kyle Busch and Eddie Mercer.

3:31

There is a lot of drivers giving the bumper to slower cars out on the track.

It looks like most of the leaders will be pitting.

3:35

Over 18 cars are heading down pit road.

Eddie Mercer didn't pit, so he is the current leader.

Tyler Millwood has slammed the wall hard backwards in turn three after it appeared he had help.

3:41

Gary Helton is the lucky dog again.

3:42

Tyler Millwood's car is terminally damaged, and is being loaded up on a flatbed.   The good news is that he is ok.

3:44

Top five: Eddie Mercer, Scott Hantz, Steve Wallace, Kyle Busch, Brian Ickler

3:45

If Eddie Mercer leads past lap 181, he will surpass Bobby Gill as the all-time lap leader during the Snowball Derby.

3:51

Johanna Long got turned sideways in turn four, but was able to get it straight and we are still under green.

3:52

There has been a bunch of cars pushing and shoving on the track.   Hopefully it will settle down a bit or we are going to see another yellow soon.

David Stremme has driven his car to the infield.

4:07

Casey Smith's right side is flapping a fender.

4:08

THere is a big stackup around the fifth position as the lead lap cars are trying to work their way around lapped cars.

4:09

We are at lap 230.   Kyle Busch has a comfortable lead over Brian Ickler.   Ryan Sieg is third, followed by Eddie Mercer and Steve Wallace.

4:12

There are 60 laps to go.   Kyle Busch still leads Brian Ickler and Ryan Sieg, but the man on the move is Eddie Mercer, who is in fourth.   Steve Wallace is fifth.

4:14

4:27

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 260

Justin Drawdy got turned into the inside wall.

4:28

The restart was a mess as Brian Scott on the inside, a lap down, went well before the leaders on the outside.   It caused a bunch of cars to not know what to do, and it ended up with Justin Drawdy in the inside wall.   Chase Elliott was involved a bit but he appears to be ok.

4:29

Officials say this is a complete restart, so no free pass will be given.   If it would have, Johanna Long would have got it.

Officials also repremanded Brian Scott for that start and told him he doesn't start the race.

4:30

Comment From Guest

well i just logged on to check the race out and the 1st thing I see is the results!! no use in me reading about the race now.. Just a suggestion for future why dont you invert everything from the start and not just after its all done.. thanks..

5:28

For everyone who follows along live, it is much better to be able to read the latest update first.  I understand what you have suggested, but it would create more problems for everyone to have to scroll down through the pages each time we update something.

5:28

Comment From Foster

I am sure Dean Clattenburg had a hand in this Hamke chassis, great guy. Great coverage, and great race.

Congratulations Kyle busch. Thanks for the great race coverage today !!!!

Comment From Tom Hanley

Wonderful that Kyle Busch supports the short track racing. Feel really bad about all the wrecked race cars. When that many drivers are allowed "rough driving" it is the race directors responsiblity to park people immediately and hopefully the lesson is learned by the remaining field. Short track racing, the future (lifeblood) of NASCAR is hurting for two reasons (A) cost of participating in a race, tires, fuel, travel, after the initial equipment investment and (B) the cost of reparing a damaged or destroyed race car.

5:29

Comment From Tom

How many were on the lead lap?

5:29

13  - which includes the heavily wounded car of Scott Hantz that actually got to the finish lien a little bit late.

Comment From Sunny South Raceway

You folks at Speed51 did a GREAT job once again. Thanks for bringing it to those who could not make it to the race!

Comment From Brian

Awesome job by all the Speed51 Guys and Girls! Thanks for keeping us all up to speed on the Snowball week. Although I would prefer to be there, this coverage (with the chat and radio) is better than the major networks did covering the NA$CAR races. I loved it!

5:31

Comment From smokersracin

Congrats to KB & congrats to entire Speed51 crew. You guys did an awesome job ALL week!

Comment From Guest

best thing about Speed51's coverage over NA$CAR broadcasts??...NO COMMERCIALS 🙂 goo speed51.comyou guys rock!

5:31

We hope to change that on the radio show at least in the future.  More advertising equals more coverage.

5:48

We have just received word that everyone has cleared tech and the results posted below are now official.

5:49

We also caught up with Stephen McCurley in the pits and found out just how long of a day that he had - from lap seven on, he had no sway bar on his car.

5:50

Comment From slm fan

great news & congrats to all, have you guys ever considered the Peterbuilt 250 for trackside now??

5:50

We would love to.  That is a great race that we've been to before.  The difference in our data and wireless signals up in Canada have given us a challenge to overcome.  But Chris and his people up at Speedway are great to work with, so maybe that will happen in the future.

5:51

Comment From Lory

So will Rowdy do a burnout now?

5:51

We're waiting to see that.  if he does, we'll let you know.

5:52

Comment From Don

Thanks for everything;))) are there any photos to post from race???

5:52

There will be plenty of stories, photos and videos posted in the next few days.  We've got a lot of material that we gathered to sort though tonight, tomorrow and later this week.

5:53

Here are the final numbers - today's Speed51.comTrackside Now coverage had close to 10,000 viewers.  As far as the radio show goes, there were 38,000 live listeners on RaceTalkRadio.com.  We expect that many fans who were at the track will read Trackside Now in the coming days and also listen to a rebroadcast or archive version of the radio broadcast.

Comment From Race Fan from Wisconsin

I am very thankful for the Speed51 coverage and the Radio coverage since I could not be there, but is there any talk of televising in the future?

5:57

Comment From Teri

You t hink we could get Eli gold and Rusty wallace and DW to do track side live next year?

5:57

We'd need a much bigger budget for any of that.

5:57

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama

You figure that 48,000 fans listening and watching speed51.comand the I would say at least 20,000 at the track it is as big as a Nascar race Job well done % Flags Speed51.comand Race Talk Radio

race22 your sister site does the updates scolling the other way much better but thanks anyways

5:59

We aren't related to Race22.com, but we appreciate the job that they do for short track racing.  The majority of the fans who we have spoken to would prefer the latest updates to be up top.  But you can't please everyone all of the time.

Comment From Steve Neely

What are the chances that we could see Scott Speed try to run the race in the future, since was around watching/helping out Kyle and those guys? Has anyone asked him?

6:02

Scott Speed was here this week and he seemed to enjoy himself.  We might see him here in future years.

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama

Scott Carlson Racing wants to thank speed51.comand their crew for the fantastic coverage at Fast Eddies and invite all of you back in 2010.

6:03

We'll be here.

6:04

Here is a reminder, tech has cleared and the results below are official.  We're still going to chase down some stories and videos though - as well as to see if Kyle Busch is going to attempt a burnout.  Stay tuned for more.

6:11

We have also found out on the lap 252 caution, according to Stephan McCurley and Brian Ickler, Grant Enfinger dove low three wide into the corner, made contact with McCurley and knocked him into Ickler.   Ickler is a bit beat up and bruised, but is ok.

We are going to attempt to get Enfinger's side of the situation and get that in video format for next week.

6:27

Comment From Rhonda

Way to go Eddie Mercer for your 2nd place Win! Was hoping for 1st but 2010 will be here before you know it!

6:28

Eddie Mercer wasn't too thrilled with his second-place finish.   We will have a post-race video interview with him next week on Speed51Radio.com.

When asked at Nashville Fairgronuds Speedway why he runs super late models the morning after he won the Nascar Bristol night race Kyle Busch stated. If you want to run for all the money and be famous you run Nascar but if you want to run against the best drivers in the world you come run Super Late Models and run the All American 400 & the Snowball Derby.
