Comment From Jesse

Wide range of culture in NASCAR nowadays. I like it 🙂

5:30
More follow up on the White incident. We earlier reported that White crashed on cold tires. While cold tires were part of a factor we understand, we also understand the front bumper of Denny Hamlin himself may have also played a rather large role.
5:28
Hear late models rumbling as they are ready to qualify.
5:26
We also got a word with Corey LaJoie, who paced K&N East practice. We chatted about his practice efforts and his trip up to Stafford (CT) for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race on Sunday.

5:24
Earlier today, we caught up with Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown Practice #1 fast timer C.E. Falk.

Not technically, but as NASCAR officials told us, the track likes to be a "good neighbor." RIR is placed in the middle of a neighborhood, for the most part, so they try to be done at a decent time on weeknights like tonight. But, there is still a commitment by all parties to get tonight's race in.
2:09
Comment From JC

ARE THERE ANY ORDINANCES IN PLACE THAT WOULD LIMIT HOW LATE THEY COULD RUN?

2:08
Comment From Elgin

Watching from the iPhone as I head south to prep for our Gulf Coast coverage on 51 for Friday and Saturday

2:08
Late in practice, it's still Boat, Wallace, Blaney, LaJoie and Elliott in the top five.
2:07
Kyle Busch on tonight's Late Model race:
"We won the first two, but I let Denny have one last year. It was the first one at Richmond, so I figured I'd give it to him."

Busch dominated last year's race, but the fuel cell was mounted backwards in the car, so he ran out of fuel just short of the finish.

2:05
Denny Hamlin on tonight's Late Model race:
"We got to run a little bit last week (in a test). We weren't as blazing fast as i thought we could or would be.

"People think Cup drivers are going to go into Late Model races and just dominate. It's not like that now. Those guys that run those tracks every week...it's hard to compete with these guys. When we have a chance to do it, it's a lot of fun."

2:04
Kevin Jones, Denny Hamlin's cousin, will give the command to fire engines for tonight's Short Track Showdown. Jones is a survivor of Systic fibrosis, a disease that the Denny Hamlin Foundation benefits, and had a successful lung transplant in 2006. Cystic fibrosis affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States; worldwide, about 70,000. Medical advances have dramatically increased the average lifespan for someone with the disease. About 1,000 lung transplants are performed in the U.S. each year; around 15 percent of recipients have cystic fibrosis.

As a reminder, tonight's Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races will be broadcast live on SPEED at 7pm. Speed51.com's Trackside Now will continue throughout the features so you can use it as an enhancement to the SPEED broadcast.

We also heard from one fan who will keep Trackside Now up on his computer while tuning in to the NFL Draft tonight, which is a pretty good sports fan plan.

1:35
There has been no movement on the time sheet for the top 10 positions in the last 10 minutes. Boat is still quickest over Wallace, Blaney, LaJoie and Elliott.
1:34
There was supposed to be a break in practice, but that does not appear to be the case now as KNPSE will go straight to 2:30 practice.

The remainder of the schedule for the day should still be the same weather permitting. The full schedule is posted at the 11:08 timestamp.

Comment From LMSC

NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars are perimeter chassis, very similar in design to a Cup or Nationwide Car. CRA & PASS Super Late Models are offset chassis.

Very much so. Everything is different, from the engines, to the carburetors, to the tires, to the shocks, to the chassis.
1:28
Comment From Kienan Hibbard

Is there much difference in rules between the Late Model Stock vs. the PASS or CRA?

The first caution of the practice a few moments ago was for the No. 51 of Stephen Nasse lightly grazing the outside wall. We're en route to his pit area for an update.
1:03
One driver definitely hoping the NKNPSE race gets in as scheduled tonight is Corey LaJoie. After tonight's event, he and his team will head up I-95 with their No. 17 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour car and make the 10-hour drive up to Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut, where "Supershoe" plans to compete in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event this weekend.
1:01
Like we said a minute ago, we don't have live timing and scoring up and running. Normally we have it on our own scoring monitor and the track has it for media as well, but it appears NASCAR does not have its feed available outside of their own scoring system at this point.

12:52
We at Speed51.com are working on our live timing and scoring feed, while the track staff is also trying to get their feed working as well. Hopefully we'll be able to give you some speed updates as practice goes on.

Victor of the inaugural Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway in 2011, Darrell Wallace Jr. is back to defend his checkers today. Wallace led 45 laps around the .75-mile facility a year ago, and as the winner of the previous NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race this year at Greenville Pickens Speedway, he’ll also look to become the first repeat event winner since Brett Moffitt won two races in a row at Dover International Speedway in 2009 and 2010.

Wallace will also be competing in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown tonight.

12:40
When Jesse Little makes the start tonight, he will become the youngest-ever starter in KNPSE series history at 15 years and 11 days old.
12:39
There are a few NASCAR K&N Pro Series East drivers making their series debut here today.

Jesse Little, son of former NASCAR racer and current NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Series Director Chad Little, is a graduate of the Late Model Stock Car ranks.  Meanwhile, Pinellas Park, Florida's Stephen Nasse is making his debut after a successful few seasons in the Pro and Super Late Model ranks throughout the Southeast.  Enrique Contreras, the 2011 NASCAR Mexico Series Rookie of the Year, is also making his series debut here today.

That said, still see some damp spots on the track from our vantage point so it will be a few more minutes of jetdrying.

12:17
Absolutely, Landon. We will be here with you all night.

Don't forget the Speed51 Draft is going on. While our panel of voters continue to vote, fans can vote to by going to Speed51.com's Facebook page (facebook.com/speed51) and let us know which 5 drivers they believe should be drafted.

12:16

You guys are going to continue coverage during the races right? The draft will be on the tvs at my household tonight.

It has been announced that the Late Models, like the K&N East cars, will have all drivers in attendance starting tonight's feature.

The Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown benefits the Denny Hamlin Foundation. The Denny Hamlin Foundation was created in 2008 to aid in raising awareness and funding for Cystic Fibrosis research and treatment, as well as to support other not for profit corporations that focus on aiding children with debilitating illnesses. 11:20
We spoke with NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Series Director Kip Childress just a few moments ago on a possible game plan should the event not get in due to rain tonight. He said there are several possibilities for the event to be held at different parts of the weekend here at RIR, but the track is going to make every effort to get both the Late Model and the East race in tonight.

Also, according to Childress, neither the Late Model race nor the K&N race are more important than the other to rush to get in tonight. Every effort will be made to get them both in tonight.

11:18
Things have gotten off to a soggy start here at Richmond. Overnight, a soaking rain came through the area. The rain dissipated to a slight mist around 10am and there is currently not anything falling from the sky. There are chances for more rain later in the day, but jet dryers are on the track currently and there are windows to complete some, if not all, of our on-track activity here today.
