Good night and we’ll see you tomorrow!
3:48
As the rain continues to fall here at South Alabama that brings today’s coverage to an end. There are some local races here tonight and we will hope to have the results for you tomorrow. If the weather blows through we will be on in the morning as we prep for a full day of practice, qualifying and of course the Baby Rattler 125. We will have information on our Five Star Race Car Bodies Facebook feed as it becomes available.

51’s Ryan McCollough took a full look into the preview of this year’s Rattler. Take a minute as we catch up with John Dykes, owner of SAS.

When race fans discuss the big time late model shows in the Deep South places like Pensacola, Gresham and Nashville are mentioned numerous times.
But this weekend over 50 teams will converge on the South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Ala. to battle for a $10,000 early season pay day in the Rattler 250 and $5,000 in the Baby Rattler 125.
Much like Rockingham used to do for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, South Alabama brings the drivers back to reality.
After spending a glitzy, glamour filed week at the beach in central Florida, the drivers head to an old school race track that gives them a cold, gritty reminder of what a long season lays before them.
“In my opinion a win in the Rattler would help a driver’s year out a lot,” said John Dykes, owner and promoter of South Alabama Speedway. “It is the biggest race we have all year and one of the last ones that has been around for a long time.”
The race began in 1974 as the Rattler Twin 50’s, and over the years has experienced a variety of different lengths. The event became a 250 lap race in 2006 when Ryan Crane took home the trophy.
In the 35 previous Rattlers some of racing’s biggest names have gone to victory lane including Pete Hamilton, Ronnie Sanders, Dave Mader III and Mike Alexander.
But only four men; Sanders, Wayne Willard, Augie Grill and Grant Enfinger have won multiple Rattlers.
“We have had a lot of tough competition come here over the years, and that’s the same this year,” said Dykes. “With tough completion, it is hard to win, just like with the Snowball.”
Sanders has captured the checkers three times, while Willard, Grill and Enfinger have each had visited victory line twice.
South Alabama Speedway is tucked away in southeast Alabama along state highway 52 and Dykes said that at times the location hurts his car count.
“If you cone here (Opp), you come here to race,” said Dykes. “We are not like Pensacola. They have all sorts of stuff for the wives and children and we have the track, but we are working on some things, a go kart track and goofy golf course that would help out some.”
In his 15 years at the helm of SAS, Dykes said he had seen his fair share of close and exciting finishes, such as last year’s battle between Enfinger and Donnie Wilson. But his most cherished memory is not assigned to a specific event, but to drivers.
“Meeting guys out here and making friends that you cherish forever is the best part,” said Dykes. “Guys like Augie (Grill), Bubba (Pollard), and (Jeff) Fultz put on some shows here and have earned a lot of fans and friends.”
The weather seems to plague Rattler weekend every year, but Dykes said the fans wanted to keep the event in its traditional slot as the Deep South’s first big money event of the year.
“We have been keeping a check on a weather this year, and it looks like the system will be out of here by the weekend.” Dykes said.
Dykes did say that if rain did force an adjustment to the schedule that he would not follow the 2011 procedure saying that was “once in a lifetime thing.”
Although he is the promoter, Dykes did make a prediction for this weekend’s race.
“A good side-by-side finish like they had at Pensacola (Snowball Derby) would be a promoter’s dream. Augie and Hunter Robbins had a great finish here a couple of years ago, so something like that would be great, except I don’t want them to tear their cars up.”
The 6th Annual Pro Rattler 125 is scheduled for Saturday night March 3rd, while the 36th Rattler 250 will go green at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
