Great job Alan Bruns

8:55
Been told when the Modified feature begins that T.J. Zacharias will replace John Wilbur in the #5SK
8:53
LAP 25 – CHECKERED – Drew Brannon holds off Sergi, Stroup, Powell, Hermiller. Nathan Russell sixth, followed by Nutley, corcoran, Hooker, and Bruns
8:52
LAP 24 – WHITE – Russell will make a move on Hermiller for fifth
8:52
LAP 23 – POPSICLE STICKS – Sergi not losing ground to Brannon in the lead, but not gaining either. Brannon looking for three in a row.
8:52
LAP 22 – Hermiller tries the crossover on Powell, no luck. Brannon has a half-second lead on Sergi
8:51
LAP 21 – Stroup clears Hermiller for third and Cole Powell trying to follow through for fourth.
8:51
LAP 20 – FIVE TO GO – Brannon, Sergi, Hermiller, Stroup, and Russell your top-five. Cole Powell sixth, followed by Nutley, Corcoran, Bruns, and Hooker.
8:50
LAP 18 – Hermiller now challenging Sergi in earnest for the runner-up spot.
8:50
RESTART – LAP 17 – Drew Brannon gets the lead but Sergi keeps him honest entering Turn Three
8:49
One to go, doubling up. Brannon will again select the outside line for the restart
8:48
Rankin’s hard contact with the catch fence broke this pole. (Speed51.com Photo)
8:48
FYI, we are changing internet source on our radio broadcast so you may lose the stream for a minute or two.
8:47
Rankin’s car now on the hook.
8:46
Track crews are going to clear the grandstands where the fence is broken so as to keep the nights festivities moving and allow for a more concrete fix tomorrow morning.
8:46
Fence Damage from the Joe Rankin crash. (Speed51.com Photo)
8:44
Track crew reporting possible fence damage from the violence of the impact Rankin had in Turn One. From our vantage point, the hit and the damage on the car reminds me of Jeff Gordon’s 06 Pocono wreck
8:44
Gressel, Jarrell, and Davis pit under this caution.
8:43
LAP 17 – CAUTION – Joe Rankin slams the wall in Turn One. Driver okay but it came to rest at a bad angle.
8:42
LAP 16 – Sergi shuts the door on Stroup as Hermiller looks pass Stroup for third.
8:41
RESTART – Brannon away on the outside on the restart. Stroup now pulls alongside Sergi for second.
8:41
RUNNING ORDER UNDER CAUTION – LAP 15:

1 Drew Brannon
2 Anthony Sergi
3 Brandon Hermiller
4 Dakota Stroup
5 Cole Powell
6 Nathan Russell
7 Brad Corcoran
8 John Nutley
9 Kirk Hooker
10 Alan Bruns
11 Mason Mitchell
12 Bruce Bennett
13 Doug Sommers
14 Marc Jacobs
15 Zach Jarrell
16 Gary Padula
17 Jason Parker
18 Andrew Gressel
19 Joe Rankin
20 Brent Wheller
21 Spencer Davis (pitting)
22 Brandon Watson (out)

8:39
8:39
The team examines the right rear as Watson drives it back to pit road. Possibly the rear end as well.
8:38
LAP 15 – CAUTION – Watson stops as damage from that contact with the wall seems to have broken something on his car – either a tire or a suspension piece.
8:37
LAP 14 – Drew Brannon takes the lead as Watson looks to follow past for second.
8:37
LAP 13 – That did Brannon second and now Brannon nips Sergi’s back bumper.
8:37
LAP 12 – Watson whitewalls the frontstretch barrier trying to get a run on Sergi
8:36
LAP 11 – Stroup gives Russell a good shove into three and takes the spot.
8:36
LAP 10 – Stroup back under Russell for fifth.
8:36
LAP 8 – No active battles on the track. Brad Corcoran having his best run of Speedweeks at the moment in seventh.
8:35
LAP 7 – A quartet of teenagers nose to tail from first to fourth – Sergi, Watson, Brannon, Hermiler
8:34
LAP 4 – Stroup falling backwards as Hermiller by for fourth, Nathan Russell for fifth. Stroup crosses the line in sixth.
8:34
LAP 4 – Watson around the outside of Brannon for second.
8:33
RESTART – Sergi and Brannon side-by-side before Sergi gets away off of Turn Two.
8:33
Mazzagatti in trouble
8:32
If you are looking for the radio link, here it is:http://www.speed51.com/2012_Stories/Speedweeks/WS_Radio.html
8:31
Mazzagatti has driven away under his own power. The damage may not be as severe as we first anticipated but there is still some significant wrinkles to be addressed.
8:30
LAP 2 – CAUTION – Mike Mazzagatti, for the second straight night, torn up. He has come to rest at the exit of Turn Four.
8:30
LAP 2 – RESTART – Sergi easily clear into the lead as two-time defending winner Drew Brannon looks for second.
8:29
Sergi will choose the outside lane for the restart as we are one to go.
8:29
Swaim pulled down pit road and has climbed from his car as he is visually displeased with the penalty.
8:26
Travis Swaim, who was going to restart third, will be sent to the rear for his involvement in the crash.
8:25
Johnson’s car now sits against the outside wall in Turn One and will need a hook.
8:24
LAP 1 – CAUTION – Brandon Johnson slams the outside frontstretch wall as he tries to make a pass in traffic
8:24
REDEUX – Sergi gets the jump this time as Stroup tries the outside of Sergi. No dice, Sergi leads lap one
8:23
One to go to the redeux, Stroup will have to mind his Ps and Qs to not jump the start again.
8:22
Cody Coughlin and Team JEGS withdrew from competition today. JEGS became involved with David Stremme’s effort in the Daytona 500 and ultimately the team felt needed to support the JEGS effort in Daytona.

8:20
www.racecareng.com
8:20
There will be a complete redeux of the start since one lap was not completed.
8:19
CAUTION – Race control had told Stroup to give the lead back to Sergi for jumping the start but Stroup’s slowdown created an according affect, leaving Donnie Varcoe spun in Turn Three
8:19
START – Stroup blasts to the leaad on the outside but slows down the backstretch.
8:18
One to go. Sergi on the inside, Stroup on the out
8:18
Again, we can’t comment on the accuracy of such a check on the racing surface, but we’d be remissed if we didn’t point out the New Smyrna Victory Circle is on a flat paved area cut into the infield.
8:17
Comment From Guest

Shouldnt that been checked on a flat surface like tech not on bank track

8:17
Can’t say if Cramner left, but we believe mechanical failures have indeed sidelined him at least for tonight.
8:17
Comment From matty9x

I noticed the 59sk of cramner was not listed in starting line up for ttm/sk feature. did he leave?

8:16
There are some legitimate questions about how accurate of a measurement we can get on a frontstretch and some other questions about the general purpose of this rule. We can not answer those questions, we will try to direct them through tech at the end of the evening.
8:15
Lots of opinions being given to us from our readers. Here’s some thoughts: When your tech inspector is Ricky Brooks, you’d better make sure you’re on your A-game. If you’re close, it’s often best not to risk it.

Will these large amount of DQs this week scare away some competitor for next year? Possibly. But a level playing field will attract more competitors, not detract them. You’re only going to show up if you feel like you’re going to have a fair chance.

8:13
Word from the tech area: The measurement of the center line of the bumper to the track was too low
8:12
Comment From Margeaux

Good job Travis Cope!!

8:12
Comment From Guest

Is the front clearance Brooks’ check of the day? no DQ’s for this before tonight and now 3 in one night and another for weight? the weight i get but i’m sure the clearance isnt something that isn’t usually messed with.

We just talked to Joe Nemechek about son John Hunter’s condition after we heard that John may have been hurt in last night’s pileup on the start of Super race. Joe says John initially believed he had broken something in his right wrist but an examination this morning showed all bones okay. Just a sore wrist for John Hunter

Comment From Wesley_Motorsports

Man!!!!!!!! Ricky just doesn’t give any one – literately an INCH! Sorry, I just couldn’t resist…

5:35
We have just gotten word from tech that the entire top three in the Super Late Model division which includes Kyle Benjamin, Becca Kasten and Ryan Moore have all been disqualified in post qualifying tech. Benjamin and Moore did not meet fender height requirements on the nose. The ABC “A” measurement must maintain a minimum length of 11.5 inches and both drivers were at 11 inches. Kasten was thrown out for too much left side weight. All three drivers will start at the tail. Kyle Larson will now get the honor as fast qualifier.
5:27
Tracking a pretty major story going on down in the Super Late Model post-qualifying tech line. We’re confirming all the details before posting, stay tuned!

We should note if you haven’t been here that though the modifieds are indeed a bit down in the car count quality, the race for the lead has been pretty thrlling every night. Usually about five or six cars go into the final lap with a decent chance.

Donnie Nall and Chris Young’s machines were demolished last night. Ted Christopher has been gone for a few nights. So that explains the decline.

Comment From Andy S

Thanks for featuring Michael Seay – his story really is quite something. Bodywork salvaged from another team (hence the ‘censored’ sponsor logo), open trailer, asking for volunteers to be his spotter, no crew or mechanics, and running an underpowered car in the SLM division. But he’s finished every race and will be back supporting the track the moment the regular season starts. Every track relies on the Michael Seay’s that make up the backbone of the sport.

1:58
8 John Hunter Nemechek was out briefly but the motor sounds ill coming down the front stretch. He has pitted.

Comment From Andy S

Has anyone been caught soaking tires at all this year, or has that message finally got through to the teams? Seems like it’s been the big story the past couple of years, but don’t remember a mention of it this year.
