It came down to the final two laps to decide the winner of the Snowball Derby. The thrilling finish and full race highlights can be seen in the video above.
The drama intensified as competitors reached the final laps of the Snowball Derby. That drama reached its peak when polesitter William Byron and Stephen Nasse made contact with less than 50 laps remaining. Nasse retaliated on the track before both drivers spoke to Speed51.com about the incident.
It’s a tradition every year to see Speed51.com’s Bob Dillner interview the Snowball Derby winner in the grandstands at Five Flags Speedway. That tradition continued in 2016 as Dillner sat down with Christian Eckes and the Tom Dawson Trophy after the race.
At the end of the Snowball Derby, there were more storylines than one could imagine. From Chad Finley’s heartbreak to Casey Roderick’s toughness, there were plenty of stories to catch up on in our video recap.
Wednesday is the day that officially kicks off the Snowball Derby each year. Track announcer Dave Pavlock announces the drivers and their haulers into the race track one by one. 51 captured the sights and sounds in this video posted on the Speed51 Network.
After Friday night’s intense qualifying, Speed51.com caught up with a few of the drivers locked into the show and a handful of drivers who still had work to do.
Preston Peltier entered the 49th Annual Snowball Derby as a driver many people had their eyes on. But his week took a dramatic turn for the worse when he crashed his No. 48 in final Snowball Derby practice. He spoke to Speed51.com about the crash and the work his team had in store to get locked into the big show.
Kyle Plott turned head in qualifying Friday night by putting his No. 4 fifth on the grid for Tuesday’s Snowball Derby. He appeared destined for a strong run early before being contact with another driver ended his Derby dreams. We had an on-board camera in Plott’s car during the crash.

Those locked into the show and those needing to go the the last chance qualifier had one final practice on Saturday afternoon. Speed51.com caught up with many of those drivers after the final session was completed.
