Tony Stewart did it again. He surprised everyone by showing up Friday night at a dirt track in Michigan and won a Sprint Car race less than a year after devastating injuries suffered in a wreck in that same style of race car.
The three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion raced his Sprint Car Friday at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Michigan and thrilled the fans by dueling some of the best drivers in the business on the .354 of a mile dirt track to pull into victory lane.
What is remarkable is that Stewart did this after a horrific wreck in a Sprint Car last year that left his right leg snapped in two places. Yet, even after three surgeries and dozens of painful therapy sessions, Stewart was determined to drive on the dirt once again.
“There was no doubt in my mind I was going to be in a Sprint Car again; it was just a matter of when,” said Stewart in victory lane. “It’s been really tough to go to Sprint Car races and watch when you’ve been racing them (in the past).”
The win came on the Sprints on Dirt night at Tri-City Motor Speedway. This weekend is Stewart’s final off-weekend of the year from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit.
