Performing in the clutch separates the best drivers from the pack. When the laps are counting down and the lights are shining brightest, the top racers thrive under pressure. Each month during the 2020 season, Tilton Engineering will honor a “Clutch Performer of the Month” from the world of short track racing.
The winner of the Tilton Engineering Clutch Performer of the Month Award for the month of July is…
Dirt Late Models
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader had to hold off Dirt Late Model racing’s best drivers not once, but twice to score Lucas Oil wins during the month of July.
The first instance was on July 4 at Portsmouth Raceway Park. With multi-time series champion Jonathan Davenport breathing down his neck, the “Newport Nightmare” had to fend off “Superman” over the final 14 laps for his sixth win with the series in 2020 by .7 seconds.
Fast forward to July 23 and he had not one, but two drivers to hold off to score the win at I-80 Speedway. Owens passed Josh Richards to take the lead on lap 27, then came Brandon Sheppard and Ricky Thornton Jr. He held off challenges from both drivers in the final laps to score a series-leading seventh win and extend his points lead.
For fending off Dirt Late Model racing’s best on two occasions, Jimmy Owens has been named the Tilton Clutch Performer of the Month for July. Owens will receive a $250 product certificate from Tilton Engineering for his clutch performances.
