All the stars lined up to make a real snoozer of a race and one special day for the Elliott family. Up-and-coming driver Chase Elliott couldn’t help the situation. For him, it was a chance to race at Rockingham Speedway (NC), where his father had run so many times in his career. Elliott’s team, led by Ricky Turner, had the opportunity to run a new Ford EMustang Body in the ASA Sunoco National Tour race at Rockingham on this date in 2010.
The backdrop, Rockingham, was the site of Bill Elliott’s final NASCAR win in 2003. It was a chance for Chase to win his first race on a track over a mile at the place where his dad closed out his career.
What happened was magical and almost a page out of the Hendrick Motorsports playbook as the car never ran another race after the dominating performance that day. Elliott won the pole by over fourth-tenths of a second. He then led all 100 laps on his way to victory. It was hard for the dominating car to not show it’s power on a one-mile track with a field of only eight cars.
It was the only time Elliott ran the series. The car was put on display after the event, and we don’t think it ran again – at least not in it’s normal state with the Mustang body.
1965 – Ned Jarrett wins the NASCAR Grand National event at Langley Speedway (VA) on the way to his championship that year with 13 wins. All but one of those wins came on the short tracks where Jarrett was so smooth.
1971 – Jack Bowsher picks up a victory in the USAC Stock Car event at Tri-City Speedway (MI). Don White, Verlin Eaker, Norm Nelson, Chuck McWilliams made up the top five. Bowsher was a three-time ARCA champion and won 21 races with the USAC Stock Cars.
1983 – Mike Stefanik wins the feature event at Riverside Park Speedway (MA) on this date in 1983.
1988 – Jack Hewitt wins the Pole Night feature at Eldora Speedway (OH). Hewitt has 28 career wins at Eldora Speedway according to our records.
1994 – Tony Stewart wins a National Midget race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Tony has won 10 USAC events at the speedway in his career.
1994 – Scott Bloomquist wins a Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Race at Lake View Motor Speedway (SC). Bloomquist won three times at the South Carolina track. You can watch racing from Lake View Motor Speedway this weekend on Speed51 by clicking here.
