On this date back in 2011, Johnny Clark started from the pole at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway (ME) for the PASS North season opener. Clark joked with Speed51 before the race, saying he was unsure of what to do because he hadn’t started on the pole in quite sometime.
PASS has a rule where a previous winner can’t start in the top 10 for the rest of the season. Clark always won a race before getting the opportunity to win the first heat and gain the pole position.
Clark had won the last three-straight PASS championships and he was seeking a fourth straight heading into the 2011 season. Clark rolled off from the pole and led 143 of the 150 laps on his way to beating Donnie Whitten for the win. Clark won seven races in 2011 and finished every race in the top 10, while posting an average finish of 2.71 for the year.
It resulted in a fourth-straight title and sixth overall for the Farmingdale, Maine native. 2011 was by far the best season of his career.
Also on this day back in 2000, Clark won a Pro Truck race at Oxford Plains Speedway (ME). Clark was a regular with the Maine Pro Truck Tour before going back to the Late Model scene where he found loads of success.
1967 – Iggy Katona won the April 30 ARCA Racing Series event at Toledo Speedway (OH). It was his fourth win in the first 11 races of the season, as he would go on to win 11 times and claim his sixth and final championship.
1977 – Jerry Cook was victorious in a 300-lap Modified race at Bowman Gray Stadium (NC). Melvin Chilton finished second. Roger Hill, Ralph Brinkley, Paul Radford, Philip Smith, Bob Park and Puddin Swisher were just some of the names in the field that day.
1995 – Bobby Dragon won at Lee USA Speedway (NH) to open the Busch North short track season. Dave Dion was second and Robbie Crouch was third. This was the third overall race of the year for the series. Kelly Moore would win the championship that year.
