The Super Late Model portion of the CARS Tour Throwback 276 at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) proved to be a wild race – both on and off the track.
Matt Craig held off Bubba Pollard and Brandon Setzer on the track for the win in the event, with a dramatic finish as Craig and Pollard repeatedly traded paint over the closing laps.
However, the fireworks truly began after the race, when Pollard threw punches at Matt’s father, Jeff Craig, on pit road, before being restrained.
After getting out of his own car, Matt Craig would exchange words with Pollard before celebrating in victory lane.
There, Craig was able to celebrate taking his Robert Hamke tribute to victory lane.
“Man, I can’t thank Hamke Race Cars, Rowdy Manufacturing, my dad, my family enough,” said Craig. “Bubba’s, he’s one of the best there is out there right now. I had to drive for everything I was worth.
“If I wrecked it by myself, it was going to be alright, because I was hanging it out like a dirt car.”
Craig added that the win carried extra meaning, with the Throwback 276’s growing stature in the Late Model world.
This race has turned into a crown jewel of Super Late Model racing. I know when them guys raced back in the day, it was like that every week.”
Brandon Setzer edged out Pollard in the closing laps for the second position, while Pollard settled for third. Tate Fogleman and Donnie Wilson rounded out the top five.
