BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA – 2012 & 2014 SRL and 2013 K&N West champion Derek Thorn has announced his 2016 racing schedule, competing for both Byron Campbell Motorsports and Jeff Jett in a coast-to-coast campaign. Highlighting Thorn’s 2016 efforts will be the new partnership between Campbell and Carlos Vieira Racing. Campbell & Vieira will merge their racing efforts on the West Coast in support of the “Race for Autism” campaign.
Vieira and Thorn are both scheduled to race in the 2016 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour. Championship Crew chief Mike Keen will continue his role with the team as well.
“Adding Carlos to our program will be a great asset for our team going into 2016,” Thorn said. “It is great to give back to the community whenever we can so this partnership is awesome. I look forward to being a part of another championship effort this year.”
“I feel privileged to be teamed up with a race team like Campbell Motorsports,” Vieira said. “With their long list of wins and championships, I know I will do well and bring home some strong finishes.”
Thorn’s East Coast endeavors, primarily with Jett Racing, will increase substantially this season, racing in four rounds of the Southern Super Series including the upcoming Rattler 250 in Alabama. Thorn is also scheduled to race in the prestigious All American 400 in Nashville, Governor’s Cup in Florida, Alabama 200 in Montgomery, and Marion Edwards Memorial in Florida. He will also race in the West Coast’s two largest Super Late Model races with the Winter Showdown at Kern County Raceway Park in February and the Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway in June.
All told, Thorn will compete in nearly two dozen Super Late Model, Pro Late Model, and Tour Car races in 2016.
Campbell Motorsports first teamed with Derek Thorn in 2010, leading into the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown where Thorn qualified on the pole in the K&N portion of the event. Thorn has gone on to set records for the most career wins and most career poles in the SRL series driving the #43 Campbell Motorsports entry. In two trips to the Snowball Derby, Campbell Motorsports and Thorn have recorded a best finish of third. Thorn’s total 2015 efforts across Bryon Campbell Motorsports and also with Jett Racing included 22 starts, 10 wins, 14 fast times, and 17 top-tens.
Vieira will be aiming for the SRL championship in his tenth season of “Racing for Autism”. The Carlos Vieira Foundation holds many fundraisers throughout the year for families affected by the autism spectrum including Vieira donating his race winnings to the cause. The cause-based racing has excited team owner Byron Campbell going into 2016.
“I have heard great things over the years about what Carlos and his non-profit charity organization have done to help families with autism,” Campbell said. “I’m proud to play a part in helping this great cause”.
While both teams will be raising money and awareness for autism, they will continue to represent their current sponsors. CVR’s main sponsor continues to be 51FIFTY Energy Drink, while Byron Campbell Motorsports will continue to showcase their current sponsors including Four Star Fruit.
The first event for 2016 will be at the prestigious Winter Showdown February 27-28 at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, CA. The $30,000 to win, 250 lap Super Late Model race has emerged as one of the premier races in the United States in just its second year. Thorn qualified on the pole and finished third in the inaugural running of the race last season.
