Derek Thorn is looking to add another big win to his resume this weekend when he makes the trip from Bakersfield, California to Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington for the 6th Annual Summer Showdown. While doing so, Thorn will be looking to join Bubba Pollard as the only drivers to pull off a West Coast “Showdown” sweep.

Thorn picked up the biggest win of his career earlier this year at his home track, Kern County Raceway Park (CA) winning the $30,000-to-win Winter Showdown.  With warmer temperatures and more sunshine in the sky, he now has his sights set on the Summer Showdown and another $25,000 prize.

300x250 Evergreen Speedway 2017.07.22 Summer Showdown“It was great to be able to win (the Winter Showdown) especially with the amount of talent that was there being Kyle Busch, Erik Jones, Bubba Pollard, Donnie Wilson,” Thorn said. “It was really neat to be able to get that win finally off of our chest and we have been really close the last two years and we have been working hard at it and it’s finally nice to have it pull through for us.”

With the Winter Showdown added to his name, Thorn now hopes to pick up his first Summer Showdown win this weekend, July 21-22 after coming up short the past two years.

“We have finished second and third at Evergreen (Speedway) and we have been really good both times we have been there, just not quite good enough to win,” Thorn stated. “So to be able to capitalize and get the Winter Showdown this year and come back and get the Summer Showdown I think that will be a really sweet victory for Campbell Motorsports.”

Thorn is no stranger to winning as he is the winningest SRL Southwest Tour driver and the defending and three-time SRL champion. When it comes to the showdowns he has been very fast the past couple years finishing second last year and third in the 2015 Summer Showdown.

Last year Thorn led the first 25 laps of the Summer Showdown before being involved in an on-track incident.  Following the incident, he charged all the way back through the field to post a runner-up finish.

After picking up the Winter Showdown win this year, Thorn looks to keep the ball rolling into Evergreen Speedway and sweep both showdowns in 2017.
