Austin Theriault made the most of his ARCA Racing Series debut Friday afternoon at Michigan International Speedway. The Fort Kent, Maine driver pulled away from Mason Mitchell on the final restart with 17 laps to go and cruised to the checkered flag in the ARCA Corrigan Oil 200 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.
“This feels awesome,” Theriault exclaimed in victory lane. “Venturini Motorsports gave me a great car and I felt I could be in contention for the win.”
Theriault and Mitchell were the fastest two cars all day long. The two traded the lead back and forth throughout the 200-mile event. Mitchell showed he had a dominant car as he led 65 of the 100 laps, but Theriault didn’t let him get too far ahead.
After a caution for a blown motor with 22 laps to go, everyone came down pit road for fresh tires and fuel.
On the restart, Theriault got a great jump on Mitchell and began to pull away while Mitchell battled with a loose car to the checkered flag.
“We had a good car all day long and just wasn’t right at the end,” Mitchell said after the race.
Justin Allison, grandson of Donnie Allison, finished third with John Wes Townley in fourth.
Townley started at the rear of the field in a backup car after crashing his primary car in qualifying.
Spencer Gallagher rounded out the top five.
With his second place finish, Mitchell is the new point leader in the ARCA Racing Series standings.
The series will head to Elko Speedway in Elko, Minnesota on Saturday, June 21st for a 250-lap event.
