The Rocket Shepp Launches to $10,000 Wild West Bonus

Brandon Sheppard once again visited FK Rod Ends Arizona Speedway victory lane on Sunday night in the Wild West Shootout 50-lap finale.  It was the third win of the week for the two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, who earned a $10,000 bonus and clinched the overall points championship in the process.

The New Berlin, Illinois driver started on the front row in his family-owned No. 5 and took command early in the race.  Sheppard would go on to lead all but one lap in the main event, with 17th-place starter Brian Shirley nosing ahead at the line just after halfway.

He and his fellow Land of Lincoln counterpart were the only two drivers to win during the Wild West Shootout, both scoring bonuses for their efforts.  However, it would be Sheppard on top of the standings after a week of racing.

“It’s been a heck of a week and for two people to get a bonus, that’s unheard of.  And it just so happens we live fifteen miles of each other,” Sheppard said on the DirtonDirt broadcast.  “It was a fun week, I wish we could’ve did a few things different, I knew we had a car that could win every night.  There was a few mistakes we made in the middle of the week and earlier this weekend that put us behind a few nights, but we’re definitely very thankful for what we have and what we’ve won and what we’ve done this week.”

Sheppard never finished outside the top three in the six features that were ran during the Wild West Shootout.  It took some adjustments late in the week to keep that streak alive after a dismal heat race that had him starting deeper in the field for Saturday night’s race, but he was able to overcome it for Sunday night’s finale.

“My car’s been coming off the corners all week and all weekend.  A few little things I found during the week that worked for me at the beginning of the week but didn’t work for me at the end of the week and I had to change up.  I figured that out in the heat race last night when I started on the pole and ran third. We figured out what we were doing wrong there and got that fixed.”

New Mexico driver Johnny Scott took the runner-up spot, just ahead of heavy hitters Ricky Weiss, Brian Shirley, and Bobby Pierce rounding out the top five.
