He may not be racing full-time anymore, but that doesn’t mean “The King” has left his throne at the top of Sprint Car racing.  20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion Steve Kinser won night number-3 of the Winter Heat Series on Tuesday at Cocopah Speedway in Arizona.

What makes this triumph even more impressive is that Kinser destroyed a car Saturday during Winter Heat competition.  The Tony Stewart Racing team flew two engines to Arizona and the crew put another car together for Kinser to keep racing in the January Sprint Car Series in southern Arizona.

Kinser inherited the lead after early race dominator and Saturday night winner, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year, Kyle Larson had to pull off the track with a flat right rear tire.  Kinser led the final 16 laps to pick up the $5,000 check for the 30-lap A-Main victory.

“Kyle got away from us early on; he really had it working on the top side,” the 60 year-old Kinser told the crowd and fans watching on National Speed Sport News TV.  “We got going on the bottom pretty good at the end of the race.  It got a lot better than it was the first couple of nights.”

Kinser last won a race at what’s known as the Diamond in the Dessert back in 1991 when is was called Yuma Speedway.

After his number-42 Sprint Car got a flat tire on lap 14, Larson charged back through the pack to finish seventh in the 22-car field.

Paul McMahan, who finished in the runner-up spot, is now the Winter Heat point leader after three events.  He has a victory on the opening night of the series, a second place finish and a ninth after three events.

Two more races will conclude the Winter Heat Series at Cocopah Speedway this Friday and Saturday.  Both races can be seen on SpeedSport.tv.
