Camaron Hamilton led every lap of the Sim Auto Racing Association (SARA) Speed51 Super Series presented by EPYK Media event at virtual Five Flags Speedway Thursday night. However, Hamilton’s win didn’t come easily, thanks to a late-race advance from his teammate.
Hamilton held off Casey Kelley, winner of the SARA Speed51 Super Series season opener at Iowa Speedway, in the closing laps to preserve his victory in the 150-lap event at the famed Florida half-mile. As is often the case when Super Late Models race at Five Flags Speedway, whether real or virtual, tire management was key in the win.
“I think just keeping the tires on it, said Hamilton after the win. “I struggled pretty much all week being tight in the center and taking care of the tires during a long run. I’ve got to thank Casey for not running me over there at the end. He drove a good race, coming all the way from 10th. He did a heck of a job.”
Kelley had closed to Hamilton’s bumper late in the race after starting on the fifth row. Hamilton was unsure if he’d be able to hold off his teammate, as Kelley made a move to the outside in the closing stages but could not make it stick.
“Going into one, I saw him dart up. I honestly thought he was going to get to me on the outside, but I just faded and hoped he didn’t get that run, just tried to get into three and four the best I could.”
Kelley rallied from his 10th starting position for a runner-up finish. While qualifying outside of the invert hurt his chances for a win, Kelley enjoyed battling through the field during the 150-lap race.
“Yeah, that 10th starting spot, that hurt us tonight, but it was fun coming through the field. I want to congratulate my teammate, Camaron Hamilton, for winning the race tonight. We had some really fast cars, I don’t think it could have driven any better.
“Just not enough time. It was fun, though. I might could have gotten beside him, but it would have been really tough to pass him.”
The SARA Speed51 Super Series will be at another Sunshine State track next week, racing at New Smyrna Speedway on Thursday, April 30. Fans can see Speed51’s full sim racing broadcast schedule by clicking here.
