Rising to the challenge is what separates a top-notch driver from the rest of the pack. Whether it’s dominating a race, going on a winning streak or sealing a win with a late-race pass, drivers slowly rise to the top of the field and make a name for themselves.
That’s why the FK Rod Ends, who has nearly 10,000 combinations of rod ends and spherical bearings available and carefully crafts their products, is proud to honor a monthly “Team FK Driver of the Month” from the short track ranks of America on Speed51.com. Each month, an esteemed panel of short track industry insiders will vote on which driver had the most success on the track. The driver with the most votes will then be the “Team FK Driver of the Month” and will receive a $25 product certificate to use at FK Rod Ends. At the end of the 2019 season, the driver that received the most votes throughout the season will then be the “Team FK Driver of the Year” and will be awarded a (to be determined) prize from FK Rod Ends. The winner of the “Team FK Driver of the Month” for the month of May is…
USAC Midgets, Sprints & Silver Crown
Racing’s “greatest month” was clouded at times by the continuing intervention of mother nature. So, who better than the man called “Sunshine” to help blow away the rain drops? Tyler Courtney scored a win in all three of USAC’s national series during the month of May on his way to being voted the FK Rod Ends Driver of the Month.
It was in the USAC National Sprints where the month’s success began for Courtney, with the 2018 USAC National Sprint champion breaking through to victory lane for the first time in 2019 on May 10. He took the checkers in the Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway in dominating fashion for Clauson-Marshall Racing, winning by over eight seconds on a Friday night.
Courtney and CMR kept up their Friday magic one week later on May 17, this time in Illinois at Tri-City Speedway in USAC National Midget competition. Continuing his early season success, “Sunshine” took his fourth USAC Midget win of 2019 and extended his points lead in the process.
Six days later, winning would be the only goal for Courtney as he made his first start of the season in USAC Silver Crown competition for car owner Hans Lein in the final Hoosier Hundred on the one-mile oval at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Starting third, Courtney avoided early trouble when Chris Windom had a huge tumble on the frontstrech.
After running second to Kevin Thomas Jr. most of the race, Courtney got his opportunity following a red flag with eight laps to go. Going to the outside through the long turns, he took the lead for the late laps, with the Indianapolis-native claiming a thrilling, but bittersweet win in the final Hoosier Hundred.
Courtney ended the month with three wins, in three series, in three different cars, for two car owners, and at three different tracks. With this performance, Speed51 has named Tyler Courtney as the FK Rod Ends Driver of the Month for May 2019.
Other drivers receiving votes this month were: Ty Majeski (two ARCA wins), Chase Majdic (Speed51 Open prelim winner and second in Speed51 Open), Michael Brown (three FASTRAK wins) and Bubba Pollard (Midwest Tour and CARS Tour wins).
