Sweet, Larson Battle for Win in Pevely Family Feud

It was a ‘Sweet’ night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 for the Kasey Kahne Racing team as Brad Sweet found victory lane after fending off brother-in-law Kyle Larson.

“That was a lot of fun,” Sweet said. “Kyle is an unbelievable talent. He’s my brother-in-law, but he makes me earn these wins.  It’s a lot of fun to see fans back in the stands. It’s not a lot of fun to win in front of empty grandstands. Hopefully the crowds keep getting bigger and bigger.”

In qualifying, Larson set the pace overall and set a new track record with a lap time of 9.995. Logan Schuchart was quick time in his respective flight.

Despite the speed, David Gravel held off Larson in a heat race. Logan Schuchart fended off Brad Sweet in their respective heat race. Brian Brown and Jacob Allen went on to score heat race wins as well.

It was Jacob Allen who flexed his muscles in the dash taking home the win and starting on the pole of the 30-lap feature. Shane Stewart lined up to his outside and Larson and Sweet making up the second row.

Allen showed the way in the opening laps before a hard-charging Sweet made the pass for the lead. It didn’t take long for Larson to make the pass around Allen for second and the battle began. Sweet maintained his lead over Larson for several laps before he began to feel pressure from second-place Larson. Schuchart showed his hand in the mix, but was no match for the two leaders.

In the end, Brad Sweet held off the sliders from Larson and went on to win the first of two nights at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.

“There were some developing lines on the racetrack,” Sweet said. “With Larson behind me, I thought the top would be the place to be. But he found the middle and I got stuck behind in lap traffic there. Just need to do a little better job on my end. The Kasey Kahne Racing team gave me a great race car. It was a lot of fun to be back.”

The World of Outlaws will return back to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 tomorrow for the Drydene Double Down Showdown with an increased purse of $10,000 making the total purse $20,000.
