Super Late Model Veteran Scores First Wheel Man Victory

He’s no stranger to wins — or a little controversy — when it comes to racing around Florida’s bullrings in a Super Late Model, but Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway (FL) veteran driver Jeff Scofield added something new to his résumé: A Wheel Man Racing Series victory.

Starting 10th and steadily working his way up through the field, Scofield took over the lead following a late restart, using an outside pass around Jesse Henley, with nine laps remaining of the 50-circuit feature.  Fingers crossed for no additional cautions, the rest of the race was smooth sailing to victory lane.

Post-race celebrations, which included cheers and a handful of boos from fans as he climbed out of his Sportsman, gave Scofield a welcomed case of déjà vu.

“I gotta thank the fans – the boos, man – it makes me feel like I’m in my Super,” Scofield said.  “I love it; you know what I’m saying?  I’ll give ‘em a Kyle Busch and bow down to ‘em.”

The win is especially sweet for Scofield following his last visit to Citrus, where the No. 07 machine was unable to start the race due to the top link ripping out during qualifying. Scofield is now the 18th different driver to claim victory in the series, a testament to the competitiveness of its drivers.

“This is a tough class,” Scofield said.  “I ran Supers all across the country, and man, you’ve got to run every lap of this thing, these guys don’t have no slack.  It’s fun.”

Henley, who Scofield praised as a “class act” for racing him clean during their battle, finished out the night in second.  Brooke Storer, who got tangled in a mid-race incident, rebounded to round out the podium.
