Dillon Motor Speedway in Dillon, SC held its 5th annual New Year’s Bash on Saturday January 10 due to a rainout the previous weekend. There was a record car count of 105 in the pit area for all divisions. 41 of those cars were Street Stocks ready to battle for the $2,000 to win prize.
After qualifying Jason Calhoun and Sonny Schoffen were the top two qualifiers, but a few competitors were not able to compete so track officials decide to start all of the remaining 39 drivers in the feature event. This decision proved to be one ensuring an action filled race.
When the green flag dropped Calhoun jumped to an early lead, but that was short lived due to hard contact with the frontstretch wall by Jimmy Penhe’s car to bring out the caution. The contact left as much damage to the frontstretch wall as it did to Penhe’s race car.
On the restart, Calhoun jumped out to an early lead where he stayed the majority of the race only to be involved in a few incidents ending his night early on lap 77. Sonny Schoffen , Jeff Melton, and Charles Hutto were also a few of the drivers caught up in the mayhem but all three also made many attempts to regain the lead making it anybody’s race with a ” Survival of the Fittest” type aura .
After heated battles with door-to-door action, which resulted in many lead changes and some of the top drivers making their way back through the field, it was Jeff Melton who came out the Victor and $2,000 richer.
Locklair Jr., Barnette, Schoffen, and Hutto completed the top five.
