WAUSAU, WI — State Park Speedway announces its 2017 race schedule. The track in Wausau, WI will see action a total of 16 times during the course of the year and welcome a number of touring series in addition to traditional nights of racing.
For the seventh straight year State Park Speedway kicks off its season welcoming the ARCA Midwest Tour to town on Saturday, May 20th. Ty Majeski won the last two straight Midwest Tour events, will someone else add their name to the trophy this year?
“Opening the season with the Midwest Tour has become something fans and drivers look forward to,” said State Park Speedway Owner Scott Wimmer. “Everyone is anxious to get the year started and there’s no better way to start things than by welcoming one of the best touring series in the Midwest.”
State Park Speedway then hosts its regular season opener on Thursday, May 25th before welcoming the newly revived Wisconsin Challenge Series (WCS) on Thursday, June 1st. The WCS will feature one race at State Park Speedway, Dells Raceway Park, Golden Sands Speedway and Marshfield Motor Speedway.
The track is back in action again the very next Thursday, June 8th as the Central Wisconsin Racing Association (CWRA) visits State Park Speedway for the first time. The Midwest trucks will make their first of two trips to State Park Speedway on this night as well.
“We are very excited to be part of the group that is bringing back the Wisconsin Challenge Series,” said State Park Speedway Owner Ron Wimmer. “To work with the other Wisconsin tracks and put this together is something we are really excited about and hope drivers are as well. This is also the first time we will have the CWRA, which we are excited about, and we are also happy to add a few more dates with the Midwest Trucks, they always put on a good show.”
After more than a week off, cars return to the speedway for the 14th Flip Merwin Memorial Race on Saturday, June 17th. This marks the first time the event will be held on a Saturday and not a traditional Thursday night. The evening will feature a four tire Super Late Model race and all support divisions.
“We are trying to give our fans and drivers as many options as we can this year,” said Scott Wimmer. “It worked out schedule wise and also makes sense for us to move the Flip Merwin Race to the weekend. We usually get some drivers that travel and this will give them an opportunity to come visit us for one of the biggest race.”
State Park Speedway closes out the month of June with regular race nights on Thursday, June 22nd and Thursday, June 29th before a two week break.
A regular race night gets things back on track on Thursday, July 20th before the much anticipated Detjens Memorial Weekend Friday, July 28th and Saturday, July 29th.
Once again the Big 8 Series will highlight Friday night racing with select support divisions. Saturday will feature the Super Late Model Detjens Memorial Race along with select support divisions.
The schedule keeps rolling for the next three straight weeks. The TUNDRA Series makes its return to State Park Speedway on Saturday, August 5th and then the track comes right back with corn night on Thursday, August 10th and then the 8th Annual Fighting Cancer Full Throttle Race on Thursday, August 17th.
After three weeks off, action returns to State Park Speedway with the Eve of Devastation on Sunday, September 10th before the regular season culminates on Saturday, September 16th with the Lodi Memorial Race and Championship Night.
“We definitely made a few changes to the end of our schedule,” said Ron Wimmer. “With the Lodi Race being one of our bigger events, it made sense to move it to a Saturday and pair it with the final race of the season. Now all of our memorial races are on Saturdays and we hope that will give more drivers an opportunity to come and race.”
The final event of the year will be the 3rd Annual Creepy Classic Enduro on Saturday, October 28th.
State Park Speedway is still finalizing its support division classes for the 2017 season. Once announced, all support divisions will race on every race night and, not including the Eve of Devastation or the Enduro, each night will be a point night.
Super Late Model point nights will be every race, with the exception of the ARCA Midwest Tour event, WCS event and TUNDRA race.
All rule packages are being finalized and will be posted as soon as they are complete.
