Rochester Hills, Michigan — The Midwest Indoor Racing Series continues preparations for the 2016 portion of the winter racing season. This Saturday, January 9th, 2016, Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan hosts the 2016 Cereal City Winter Showdown. The traditional new year kick off for Motor City Racing Promotions has seen a slew of entries continue to pour into the home offices in Rochester Hills, Michigan as the fourth year series will once again invades southern Michigan.
The list of 600cc Non-Winged Mini Sprints entries continues to grow and is led by Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt star, Ryan Ruhl who finished sixth in his MIRS debut on Day I of the Thanksgiving Classic Weekend back on November 27th in the Friday Night Shootout. The Coldwater, Michigan driver then brought home a runner-up showing in the 50-lap headlining main event the next night on November 28th. The 28-year-old is looking to add an indoors victory to his list of outdoors accomplishments, all of which have come on the dirt in Winged Sprint Cars competition.
An impressive list of former MIRS winners will look to thwart the efforts of Ruhl as Clay Sanders, who swept Thanksgiving Classic Weekend, will look to complete the sweep of the season in Battle Creek with a third straight win. Former Kellogg victors and Indiana residents, Drew Dorsett and Jason Ormsby both look to add to their career win totals and so will 15-year-old Ryan Ball, who has one win in Go-Karts. Mini Sprints Track Record holder, Bill Dunham has also filed his entry while 17-year-old Tyler Fitzpatrick finished second in this event on year ago and looks to improve one more spot. Marv Hephner, Tyler Herschberger, Howard McCormick, Bobby Murany, Brian Nelson and Battle Creek native, Jeff Wolfersberger will all make the trip as well.
Three-Time Defending Kalamazoo Speedway Super Late Model Track Champion, Mike “Bubba” Brooks, a former competitor in MIRS with the Mini Sprints in years past, returns to competition as the 33-year-old Texas Corners, Michigan standout will race in the Go-Karts Heavy Clones division. Pavement Winged Sprint Car driver, Cody Gallogly will make his MIRS debut as the 24-year-old from Pataskala, Ohio will be competing in the Go-Karts 360s and Heavy Clones divisions. Six-time feature winner, Josh McKnight (360s & Heavy Clones) as well as former checkered flag holders Dylan Woodling (Heavy Clones and Senior Caged) are also doing double-duty.
More former winners in MIRS within the ultra competitive Go-Karts ranks that are entered includes a pair of three-time MIRS feature winners, Shawn Kluck (Heavy Clones) and 15-year-old Arron Vincent (Heavy Clones) are both in search of win number four. A pair of five-time winners in 13-year-old Victorya Truemner (Gold Plate) and nine-year-old Aiden Williamson (Junior Caged) will look to add to their career wins total while 14-year-old Kaitlin Randall (Gold Plate) has two wins and is in search of win number three. Her older brother, 19-year-old Nate Randall (360s) as well as 16-year-old Sam Weaver (360s) and eight-year-old Alex Geren (Purple Plate) all have one career win. A pair of females representing the Weaver Performance stable in 19-year-old Kelsey Ivy and Jada Weaver are both in search of their first ever MIRS triumph.
Six-year-old Brodie Wendel, already a two-time event winner, will pull double-duty in both the Go-Karts Kids Karts and Quarter Midgets Junior Honda divisions. Now five-year-old Oliver Osborne, while still just four years old, became the youngest feature winner in MIRS history during the 2015 Thanksgiving Classic Weekend, will go for win number two in the Kids Karts. All-time career MIRS feature wins leader, now 11-year-old Chase Burda will look to add to his total, currently at 25 features in the Quarter Midgets and so will fellow 11-year-old Casey Smith, who has six wins to his credit and will also look to add more trophies.
More former Quarter Midgets entries who have visited victory lane include five-time victor, Bobby Stanley and a pair of drivers with one win on their resume; nine-year-old Landon Hathaway and eight-year-old Alex Sexton. Sexton’s older sister, 15-year-old Taylor Sexton has also filed her entry as well as Hathaway and the Sexton siblings will lead an expected strong contingent of teams from near-by Little Kalamazoo Speedway into Kellogg Arena.
In the Mini Cups division, all eyes will be on Scott Quaal who has won the last four Features in a row dating back to this event one year ago. The Bridgeport, Michigan driver has been the man to beat since the series inception in 2012 with eight career feature wins including the last three in a row at Kellogg Arena. Fennville, Michigan driver, Kyle Trinklein, who finished second at the Thanksgiving Classic Weekend event to Quaal, will look to advance one more position with hopes of dethroning Quaal from the top of the mountain.
A trio of females will also try their hand at defeating the guys as 18-year-old Nicole Stanley, a five-time MIRS feature winner in Quarter Midgets, will make her second career Mini Cups start while 13-year-old Corey Smith, a three-time MIRS feature winner herself in Quarter Midgets will also make her second ever start. Central States Super Cup Series regular, 14-year-old Maggie Struthers, who finished third in CSSCS points, will make the trip from Shorewood, Illinois and make her MIRS debut. An 11-time MIRS Feature Winner, Jayson Mikula will lead the Lawn Mower entries into southern Michigan. The Sparta, Michigan rider is second all-time in career Feature wins in MIRS history behind only Burda’s 25 and will have two chances to add to that total by competing in the Lawn Mowers Super Modifieds and Stocks divisions.
A full 19-division lineup will race on the traditional opening weekend of racing to start the new calendar year in southern Michigan. There will be a Practice Day on Friday, January 8th as the Pit Gates open and load in begins at 12:00p.m. Rotating Practice for all divisions will run from 4:00-9:00p.m. Pit Passes are sold on Practice and Race Day only.
