Picking the winners of big short track races throughout the country is a tradition that our staff at Speed51.com has enjoyed for many years. With the biggest Big-Block Modified race of the year being held this weekend at Oswego Speedway (NY), we decided to challenge our staff once again.

This week we asked members of our Speed51.com team, “Who are you picking to win the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 during NAPA Super DIRT Week?”

The answers we received varied, but when all the votes were tallied it was Stewart Friesen (seven votes) who was named the favorite to win the big race.  Overall, six different drivers received votes from our panel of 17 experts.

Check out our full list of staff picks for Super DIRT Week below.

Aaron Creed, Speed51.com National Correspondent

Pick: Stewart Friesen

2017 was Matt Sheppard’s year, but I think Stewart Friesen will get back to what he does best – winning the big 200-lap event during Super Dirt Week. He has the most Super DIRTcar Series victories this year, that feat accomplished by running less races than the series regulars due to his full-time ride in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The sixth win will be his by the end of the day at Oswego Speedway.

Adam Mackey, Speed51.com Correspondent

Pick: Stewart Friesen

Stewart Friesen has won five Super DIRT Week main events, so he is the odds-on favorite every time he goes on track. He is my pick to win number six.

Bob Dillner, Speed51.com Executive Editor

Pick: Matt Sheppard

He’s Super Matt. Enough said.

Brandon Paul, Speed51.com Editor

Pick: Matt Sheppard

I tried talking myself into picking someone else, but I couldn’t do it. Sheppard has been the man to beat the last two years at Oswego. Not only did he win last year’s race, but he led over 150 laps during the first Super DIRT Week at Oswego in 2016. I expect the No. 9s to be parked in victory lane for the second straight year at the Clay Palace.

Connor Sullivan, Speed51.com Northeast Editor

Pick: Danny Johnson

The Doctor has shown time and time that he is back at the front in 2018, with three Super DIRTcar Series victories this year. He is a two-time SDW winner on the old Syracuse Mile and has had two years of experience now at the Oswego. It is all great potential for Johnson to make it three SDW trophies on Sunday.

Dakota Geyer, Speed51.com State Editor (IN & MI)

Pick: Stewart Friesen

The one they call “Mr Freeze” has been dominant in this race in years past. After not winning last year’s race, look for him to go back to his winning ways and return to Super DIRT Week victory lane.

Pick: Mat Williamson

There are plenty of big name stars to choose from in this unique event. Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen (past winners at Oswego) will be two of the favorites for sure, but Williamson has put up big win numbers in Dirt Modifieds the last two seasons, including an impressive victory at the World Finals in Charlotte last year. Williamson is my pick to hoist the Billy Whittaker Cars and Trux 200 trophy come Sunday at the Clay Palace.

Pick: Stewart Friesen

It’s hard to bet against Matt Sheppard, but if there is anyone who can stop him at Super DIRT Week it would be Friesen. He knows what it takes to win at SDW and he’s been in contention at just about every dirt race he’s attended this year.

Elgin Traylor, Speed51.com Southeast Correspondent

Pick: Matt Sheppard

“Super Matt” will fly to victory lane for the second straight year at Oswego.

Evan Canfield, Speed51.com / MoJo Photos

Pick: Erick Rudolph

Rudolph has been one of the best drivers on dirt all year. He is a guaranteed starter after winning at Weedsport earlier this year. Rudolph has recorded more top-five finishes than anyone else on the Super Dirt Series this season, and he sits second to Matt Sheppard in points, still within striking distance of the points lead. I think Super DIRT Week is where he will shine brightest and score the biggest win of his career.

Jeremy Anders, Speed51.com Northwest Editor

Pick: Matt Sheppard

I have to go with the defending Super DIRT Week Champion Matt Sheppard for the win. He has been so good in recent years that it’s tough to choose against him.

Kevin Peters, Speed51.com Southwest Editor

Pick: Stewart Friesen

Friesen finished fourth in last year’s event and has five wins in the Super DIRTcar Series this season. I see him stepping up and taking home the $50,000 check for the sixth time.

Mark Keeler, Speed51.com Operations Manager

Pick: Brett Hearn

It’s been six years since the six-time Super DIRT Week winner has visited victory lane in the big race, but I expect him to end that drought this weekend.

Patrick Hahe, Speed51.com Great Lakes Editor

Pick: Matt Sheppard

One of the key rules to life I have learned is to not tug on Superman’s cape, so it’s hard to pick against Sheppard.

Rob Blount, Speed51.com Associate Editor

Pick: Matt Sheppard

It’s hard to bet against the best in the business. He’ll get the job done at the Clay Palace on Sunday.

Ryan McCollough, Speed51.com Southeast Correspondent

Pick: Stewart Friesen

Stewart Friesen has been one of the hottest and consistent pavement and dirt racers in the country in 2018. He keeps his winning ways rolling with a big W at Oswego.

Tom Ryan, Speed51.com Digital Manager

Pick: Stewart Friesen

Friesen will return to victory lane at Oswego to make it three wins in four years in the biggest Super DIRTcar Series race of the year
