Picking the winners of big short track races throughout the country is a tradition that our staff at Speed51.com has enjoyed for many years. With one of Florida’s biggest Super Late Model races being held Sunday at New Smyrna Speedway, we decided to challenge our staff once again.

This week we asked members of our Speed51.com team, “Who are you picking to win the 53rd Annual Governor’s Cup 200?”

The answers we received varied, but when all the votes were tallied it was Jeff Choquette (seven votes) who was named the favorite to win the big race.  Overall, four different drivers received votes from our panel of 19 experts.

Check out our full list of staff picks for the Florida Governor’s Cup 200 below.

Aaron Creed, Speed51.com National Correspondent

Pick: Stephen Nasse

When you accomplish that first major win of the season, the odds of more to follow definitely increase. That will be the case for the 2018 World Series of Asphalt Stock Racing Super Late Model champion from February at New Smyrna Speedway.

Adam Mackey, Speed51.com Correspondent

Pick: Jeff Choquette

One guy that has won about every big race at New Smyrna is Jeff Choquette. That on top of his recent Winchester 400 win are reasons enough why Choquette is my pick for this year’s Governor’s Cup.

Allick Jorgensen, Speed51.com Florida State Editor

Pick: Jeff Choquette

No one’s been better at New Smyrna Speedway in recent years than Jeff Choquette. Though driver’s like Pollard and Nasse will be there to challenge, the Jett Concrete No. 9 will be the one to beat this weekend.

Bob Dillner, Speed51.com Executive Editor

Pick: Stephen Nasse

Stephen Nasse gets on a roll and gets his second signature win of the season. Sometimes all it takes is one big win to get it rollin’ and he got that in the Mobile 300.

Brandon Paul, Speed51.com Editor

Pick: Bubba Pollard

Pollard is determined to add more marquee victories to his resume this year. He has two more opportunities to do so, and both of those opportunities are in the state of Florida. He’ll add the Florida Governor’s Cup to this resume before heading to Five Flags Speedway and trying to claim the biggest prize of them all: The Snowball Derby.

Connor Sullivan, Speed51.com Northeast Editor

Pick: Stephen Nasse

While Nasse is always in the mix seemingly anywhere, you can always count on him to be up front at New Smyrna. Nasse has claimed his fair share of wins in the winter months there, plus he has some confidence after a recent Southern Super Series win in Mobile.

Dakota Geyer, Speed51.com State Editor (IN & MI)

Pick: Jeff Choquette

Choquette has been one of the best drivers at New Smyrna in recent memory and is coming off a thrilling Winchester 400 victory last month. Look for Choquette to keep it rolling with a Governor’s Cup win.

Pick: Bubba Pollard

With the 2018 short track season winding down, one man has a few big events circled on his calendar. That man is Bubba Pollard. Pollard has had an incredible 2018 picking up some big wins including his first attempt at the historic Oxford 250 and the Canadian Short Track Nationals. Pollard will certainly be looking to add the Governor’s Cup trophy to the collection before chasing his first Tom Dawson Trophy at the 51st Snowball Derby.

Pick: Bubba Pollard

It’s nearly impossible to not pick Pollard in any race he enters. He proves over and over that he is the guy to beat every time he hits the track. My money’s on Bubba.

Elgin Traylor, Speed51.com Southeast Correspondent

Pick: Stephen Nasse

Nasse has led over 300 laps in this race and he’ll be like a pitbull come Sunday. He’s overdue, past due and ready to check this one off his list.

Evan Canfield, Speed51.com / MoJo Photos

Pick: Corey Heim

Corey Heim has been competitive in almost every race he has entered in 2018. With a win at South Boston this past weekend, momentum is on his side. Look for him to beat the best and take a signature win at the Governor’s Cup.

Jeremy Anders, Speed51.com Northwest Editor

Pick: Jeff Choquette

In the history of of the Florida Governor’s Cup, Jeff Choquette has been one of the most successful drivers being a two-time winner of the race. New Smyrna and Choquette match up well as he will get his third win this weekend.

Kevin Peters, Speed51.com Southwest Editor

Pick: Bubba Pollard

Trying to go for the most wins in this competition, I can’t give anything back to my knowledgeable combatants. That is why I am going with Bubba Pollard. He was the 2016 winner, as well as the 2015 runner-up finisher. Despite a seventh-place effort last year, his 2018 stats are just too hard to pass up. Bubba will be playing the guitar again, and the tune will be sweet.

Madison Mabry, Speed51.com Southeast Correspondent

Pick: Stephen Nasse

With a big win finally under his belt, he’s on the hunt for more. Nasse will dial the No. 51 in this weekend and park it in victory lane at New Smyrna Speedway.

Mark Keeler, Speed51.com Operations Manager

Pick: Stephen Nasse

Stephen Nasse has turned more laps at New Smyrna Speedway than probably any track that he has run on in his Late Model tenure and even Pro Trucks before that. This will be his ninth start in the Governor’s Cup and much like Bob Dillner, I believe that his Mobile 300 victory will provide some momentum heading into the biggest race at his “home track.” I believe the reigning World Series champion has everything in place to pick up his fourth straight top 10 Governor’s Cup finish and etch his name onto the Al Keller Trophy with the win.

Patrick Hahe, Speed51.com Great Lakes Editor

Pick: Jeff Choquette

Choquette always runs strong at New Smyrna, so this seems like an easy pick, though I expect Pollard and Nasse to be very strong.

Rob Blount, Speed51.com Associate Editor

Pick: Bubba Pollard

I’ve said it a lot recently, but I’m done picking against Pollard. Every time I do, he wins.

Ryan McCollough, Speed51.com Southeast Correspondent

Pick: Jeff Choquette

The Jett team has been lightning fast in recent weeks no matter who is in these seat. I think Jeff Choquette will find his way to victory lane once again down at the beach.

Tom Ryan, Speed51.com Digital Manager

Pick: Jeff Choquette

My pick for the Governor’s Cup is the favorite from Florida. Jeff Choquette will pick up another Gov Cup trophy along with another win this weekend at 2014 Announcer of the Year Mark Keeler’s home track.
