What Won the Race:

A late-race caution triggered by AJ Lesiecki was extended to a red flag to refuel after Trent Stephens slowed from second place.  Trent Stephens had run out of fuel with 11 to go, and was placed at the tail of the field following the refueling period.  The caution allowed Dave Shullick Jr. to make a winning pass on Mike Lichty to win the Hy-Miler Nationals 100.

The Skinny:

Early leader Mike Ordway Jr fell out of the race after 35 laps due to an issue with the car.  Mike McVetta inherited the lead, but soon followed Ordway Jr to the pits with an issue.  Dave Shullick Jr. assumed the lead for a majority of the race, before catching lapped traffic and falling back to third.  A late-race restart allowed Shullick Jr. to make the winning move around Mike Lichty to win the Hy-Miler Nationals 100.

Winning Quote:

“We just gave it everything we had.  That’s all we could do.  He (Lichty) probably had a better car than we did, but we had a better car on restart.  The car only goes on restarts.  Just gave it everything I had at the end.  I’d rather end up in a ball off one than settle for second.” – Dave Shullick Jr.

Ben Seitz, Moe Lilje, and Otto Sitterly won the night’s three heats.  The heats were relatively clean, excluding spins by Jon Henes and Justin Belfiore.

Qualifying Format:

Supermodifieds will receive two timed laps of qualifying, which will sort teams into heats.  Feature starting positions are based on ISMA rules.

Event Schedule:

Qualifying is scheduled to start at 4 PM, with heat races for both the ISMA Supermodifieds and Modifieds at 7 PM.  Modified heats will be first, then ISMA Supermodified heats.  Modifieds will run a 50 lap feature before the 100 lap Hy-Miler Nationals.

Who to Watch For:

Dave Shullick Jr won Friday night’s Hy-Miler Fast 40 in dominating fashion, and it’s expected that he will have a strong showing again.  Danny Shirey had a strong car in qualifying Friday, but will be looking to improve on a third place finish.

Title Fight:

Entering last night’s Hy-Miler Fast 40, Mike Lichty led the 2016 ISMA Supermodified championship over Dave Shullick Jr. by 50 points.

The Track:

Sandusky Speedway is a half-mile asphalt track located Southwest of Sandusky, OH.  While Sandusky may be known as part of “America’s Roller Coast” due to being the home of Cedar Point, many other speedy residents spend time in the city.  Sandusky Speedway is home to the Hy-Miler Nationals, one of three ISMA Supermodified triple crown races.  The Main Event Racing Series (Outlaw Super Late Models) finish their season annually at Sandusky.  Before NASCAR’s testing ban, several Cup teams spent time practicing for short track races at Sandusky.  NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team ThorSport Racing has their shop located just a few minutes from the facility.

Weather:

Rain fell after practice, but the track has dried in time for qualifying.  Rain is not expected to be a factor the rest of the night.  Conditions are partly cloudy with a swift breeze.  Temperatures are in the high 70’s.

Next Series Race:

The ISMA Supermodifieds will be racing next weekend with two stops in the Northeast.  On Friday, August 5th, teams will run the Ollie Silva Memorial at Lee USA Speedway.  Saturday, August 6th, focus will shift to the New London-Waterford Speedbowl for 50 laps.
