The Skinny:  Sheppard started sixth and was solidly in the top five by halfway.  He dispatched Tim Fuller for second on lap 22, then took the lead from fast-timer Rick Laubach on lap 24.  Laubach kept pace for a few laps, then Larry Wight took over the battle for the lead.  Laubach and Wight each struggled in lapped traffic, allowing Sheppard to pull away in the final handful of laps.

Winning Quote
: “It’s unreal,” Sheppard said in victory lane.  “It was such a crazy off-season for us with so much going on, building this team in such a short amount of time.  We could say I’m going out on my own, but not really.  I’ve got a ton of great people that stepped up and are helping out and everybody really came together.

Notebook: Rick Laubach set fast time overall in timed hot laps.  Tim Fuller swept SDCS events last night, now Rick Laubach looks to do the same after taking fast time and winning his heat.  Tim Kerr caught the wall during heat three following contact, but was able to continue racing.  The first caution for the big block modified came halfway through heat three after Eldon Payne pulled off track.  In the first Last Chance qualifier, Jessey Mueller and Jamie Mills made contact while battling for the third spot, which was the final transfer position.  Mills slowed to a stop to bring out the yellow.  Pete Britten won that LCQ over Brian Swartzlander, while Mueller held on for the final transfer spot.  In the second LCQ, Erik Martin brought out the yellow five laps into the 10-lap race.  Steve Bernard made a last-lap pass of Darwin Green for the win in the second LCQ.  Mat Williamson rallied late to take the final transfer spot.

In the 30-lap feature, Larry Wight leads the opening lap.  Yellow slows field lap 1 for multi-car pileup involving Billy VanInwegen, HJ Bunting, Brian Swartzlander and JR Heffner.  Laubach takes the lead on the ensuing restart.  Tim Fuller settles into second behind Laubach.  By lap 10, Laubach in lapped traffic.  At halfway, lap 15, Laubach leads Tim Fuller, Larry Wight, Matt Sheppard and Billy Pauch.  Frieden, Rudolph, Hearn, Dunn and Dippel round out the top 10.

Shepard moves to third, past Wight, on lap 17, only to lose it back to Wight a lap later.  Lap 19, Sheppard to third again around Wight.  Then on lap 22, Sheppard dispatches Fuller from second.  Lap 23, Sheppard, Wight and Fuller go three-wide for second.  Shepard comes away with it over Fuller and Wight.

Lap 24, lead change as Sheppard passes Laubach.  Wight to second around Laubach as well.  Laubach right on the leader’s back bumper with five laps to go.  Four to go, Wight’s advances for the lead slowed by the lapped car of Darwin Green on the high groove.

Sheppard pulls away in the final laps for victory over Wight, Laubach, Friesen and Rudolph

Who To Watch For: Tim Fuller set the stage for the four-race stretch of the Super DIRTcar Series at the DIRTcar Nationals Wednesday night with a dominating victory Wednesday.  Billy Dunn gave him a run for his money in the mid stage of the race, but Fuller pulled away late.  Matt Sheppard and Brett Hearn, who were two of the only drivers to make the inside groove work Wednesday night, will be out to better their strong top-10 finishes from Wednesday.  Tyler Dippel and Tyler Siri, who started on the front row of Wednesday’s event, each suffered tough luck in the 30-lap feature and will look for better results Thursday.

The Track: Volusia Speedway Park is a half-mile dirt oval.  The track opened as a 1/4 mile dirt oval in 1968, operating through 1969.  It expanded to 3/8 mile (still dirt) in August of 1969, operating through 1971.  It expanded again to 1/2 mile in February 1972, operating through 1989, when it was paved. It operated as a paved oval until 1997, when it was converted back to dirt.

The 3/8 mile dirt oval opened behind turn 4 of the original oval, operating from 1993 until it was paved in 1998, In late 2004 the paved surface was torn up and as of 2015 only the slight footprint of the 3/8 mile paved oval remains. A 1/8 mile dirt karting track is located inside the former 3/8 mile course. (From Wikipedia)
