What Won the Race:

A great battle for the lead from front row starting spots between Jimmy Phelps and Mike Mahaney kept the fans on the edge of their seats.  Phelps was able to get the early lead and hold off several charges from Mahaney throughout the event to keep the lead.  Tim Fuller and Brett Hearn charged late, but could not challenge Phelps for the win.

Feature Notebook:

  • 30 cars come to the green flag for the 100-lap feature event.
  • The #11 of Anthony Alger will not make the call for the start of the 100-lap feature.
  • Mike Mahaney (88m) and Jimmy Phelps (98h) make up the front row and will bring the field to the green flag.
  • race time temperatures fell into the low 50’s
  • A great battle for the lead throughout much of the event and after several restarts between Jimmy Phelps and Mike Mahaney.
  • Lap 62 Matt Sheppard pulls high and stops exiting turn 2. Sheppard pits and takes a right rear tire. Sheppard is penalized 1 lap for an intentional caution.

The Skinny:

Mike Mahaney and Jimmy Phelps brought the field to the green flag for the Mohawk Valley 100.  The two battled door to door, lap after lap with Phelps finally getting the upper hand. Matt Sheppard kept close tabs on the front two until the half-way point of the event when he started to fade back through the field.  Sheppard pulled high off turn 2 and drew a yellow flag. During the caution, Sheppard went pitside to take a right rear tire.  Race officials deemed that the right rear was not flat on the 9s machine and ruled the caution as intentional.  A one-lap penalty was handed down to Sheppard.  He charged back through the field after pitting and crossed the stripe fifth, but was credited with a 17th place finish after the penalty.  Tim Fuller and Brett Hearn charged late in the race to come home with second and third place finishes, but could not challenge Phelps for the lead.  Jimmy Phelps drove his Teo Pro Car to victory over Fuller, Hearn, Mahaney, and Stewart Friesen.

Winning Quote:

“I can’t believe it. I really don’t know what to say. We have been here a handful of times and we haven’t run well here. I knew I had a good car, I just had to learn how to drive it. We had some good track position and I was able to get out front.”
