The Skinny:

Twenty-six groundpounding asphalt modifieds pulled into the Holland International Speedway pit are to battle in the Thunder in the Hills 100.  Group time trials saw “The Hotshoe” Chuck Hossfeld set fast time of the day with a lap of 13.650 seconds. Three heat races would set the field for the night with Chuck Hossfeld, Jimmy Zacharias, and George Skora III claiming in those three qualifying events. A redraw for the top 12 starting positions put Brian DeFebo and Mike Leaty on the front row for the 100 lap main event.

At the drop of the green flag, Mike Leaty and Brian Defebo would battle up front with Leaty getting the early advantage. DeFebo would make a pass for the lead on lap 26 and Jimmy Zacharias was charging hard for battle for the top position.  On lap 30, Zacharias took over the top spot from DeFebo and would lead for an extended time.  A couple of crashes in the event would take out competitors such as Chris Ridsdale, Will Thomas, and Alan Bookmiller.  The fight for the top spot would heat up with 20 laps to go as Patrick Emerling was on the tail of the Zacharias 71. Emerling pulled to the inside of Zacharias and the two battled door to door for several laps until Emerling finally got the advantage. Patrick Emerling would go on to take his fourth Race of Champions Modified Tour victory over Jimmy Zacharias, Andy Jankowiak, George Skora III, and Mike Leaty rounding out the top 5.

Winning Quote:

“Things went very good for us and this is my home track and we only live about a mile and a half up the road, this is where i started out and I had a good idea about what the track needed. We came up with a strategy to make these 15 inch tires last 100 laps with no change, and that’s what we did.”
