(Pensacola, FL) – The Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco is back for its fourth year of action. The 2016 season for one of the premier Super Late Model touring series in America will consist of a 12-race schedule at six tracks in four different states.
The series will begin on March 20 at South Alabama Speedway and will end at the home of the Snowball Derby, Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida, on October 1.
“With 2015 in the rear view and Texan Casey Smith joining Daniel Hemric and Bubba Pollard as Southern Super Series Champions, we’re excited to look ahead towards the 2016 season,” said Tim Bryant, Southern Super Series promoter. “With the help of a great marketing partner in Green Oil and the Sunoco brand, along with a host of others, we’ll be offering some even more exciting things to a group of the best Super Late Model teams in the country.”
The Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Alabama will kickoff the series slate on the weekend of March 20. The Rattler 250 weekend will be one of just three multi-day events for the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco.
From there the series will head to its newest event, the North/South Super Late Model Challenge, at the historic Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee on the weekend of April 8 and 9. The North/South Super Late Model Challenge will be a combo event with the ARCA/CRA Super Series. It will feature a 50-lap points race for each series on Friday, April 8, and then a 75-lap showdown between drivers of both series on Saturday, April 9.
At the end of April, the Southern Super Series will make its traditional trip to the Gulf Coast for its only doubleheader weekend at Five Flags Speedway (FL) and Mobile International Speedway in Alabama. The series will race Friday, April 29 at Five Flags, and the very next day at Mobile.
The series will return to Five Flags Speedway just about one month later on Friday, May 27 for a 100-lap showdown. Just one week later, on June 4, SSS will pay its second visit to Crisp Motorsports Park (formerly Watermelon Capital Speedway) in Georgia following the success of last year’s race that saw a thrilling battle for the win between Daniel Hemric, Chase Elliott and Harrison Burton in the closing laps.
The Southern Super Series will visit Alabama’s Montgomery Motor Speedway twice in 2016, with the first visit coming on June 18 for the “Rumble by the River.” The series will return to Montgomery for its penultimate race of the season, the Alabama 200, the weekend of September 11.
South Alabama Speedway will play host to the Southern Super Series a second time in 2016 when the series returns on July 9. The series will race just one more time in the month of July when it heads back to Five Flags Speedway on July 22.
The Lee Fields Memorial 150 will be a Super Late Model race for the second-straight year and will play a deciding factor in the championship battle as the Southern Super Series visits Mobile once again with just three races remaining on the calendar. The Lee Fields Memorial will be held on Saturday, August 20.
For the third consecutive year the Southern Super Series will conclude its season at Five Flags Speedway on Saturday, October 1. The Deep South Cranes 150 will decide a champion and will serve as the final tune-up before the 49th Annual Snowball Derby.
“Our schedule will offer diversity in tracks, distance and even formats,” said Bryant. “We’ve worked hard to schedule with other major touring groups, to ensure that racers would be able to run multiple series if they choose to.”
