Snowball Derby Sportsman Win 18 Years in the Making

November 29, 2018 • App, Archives, Other Cars, Region - Southeast, Snowball Derby

(Editor’s Note: Speed51.com has learned that apparent second-place finisher BJ Leytham has been disqualified for having a drag link that was two inches too wide.)

It took a while for Thursday’s Snowball Derby Sportsman feature at Five Flags Speedway to get going, but as the saying goes, “good things come to those that wait.”

B.J. Leytham led most of the 50-lap Sportsman feature but battled a race car that was looser and looser as the race neared its completion.  The loose condition and lapped traffic allowed Shanna Ard to make a three-wide pass for the lead off turn two with nine laps to go.  Lapped traffic continued to play a factor through the end of the race, allowing Ard to extend his lead and take his first Snowball Derby Sportsman division win.

For Ard, the victory was many years in the making.  It was hard for him to find the right words in victory lane when speaking with Speed51.com after his win.

“Well I’m speechless really, kinda unbelievable,” Ard said.  “Eighteen years of trying this and we finally won.  I think we’ve finished in every position there is to finish in, but tonight we came out number one.”

Ard let the crowd know he wasn’t sure how long it would take for the victory to sink in.

“I don’t know how it feels yet, but I’ll let you know later tonight.”

Action at Five Flags Speedway continues Friday night with one of the most intense qualifying sessions in racing, qualifying for the 51st Annual Snowball Derby.  Also on tap is the 75-lap Snowball Derby Modified of Mayhem feature.
