Qualifying for the Snowball Derby is always a tense affair, with the best Super Late Model teams in North America battling against the clock for the 30 starting spots. For the 52nd Annual Snowball Derby presented by BJ’s Wholesale Club on December 4-8, there will be extra motivation on the line thanks to new Pit Pay mobile app.
The fastest driver in qualifying for the Snowball Derby will be eligible for the Pit Pay Pole Challenge, a $10,000 bonus courtesy of Pit Pay App. In order to claim the bonus, the pole-sitter must win the 300-lap Super Late Model race on Sunday, December 8. If that driver can win from the pole, they will claim the $10,000 bonus to go along with the $25,000 winner’s share of the purse.
Pit Pay is a mobile app being developed to help teams pay pit pass fees electronically to tracks, offering convenience for teams and tracks alike by simplifying the transaction process. Teams will be able to display a mobile pit pass, which tracks can scan to check in those crew members.
“Pit Pay is a mobile application we’re launching next year where you can buy your pit pass, sign the waiver, show up with a mobile boarding pass and get right in the track,” said Frank Bolter, developer of the Pit Pay App. “I think it will be really good to save you time. Guys are always short-handed at the race track and want to get in. When you get to the race track, you just want to get there and unload your race car. Ideally, we’ll be able to cut down the line, get in there and have some fun.”
“The concept of Pit Pay is another sign of modern technology moving short track racing forward and make the race experience easier for both tracks and competitors,” said Five Flags Speedway owner Tim Bryant. “With the Pit Pay bonus, our fast qualifier will now have an opportunity to pocket $35,000 at the Derby.”
The 52nd Annual Snowball Derby begins on Thursday, December 5, with the WCIParts.com Pro Trucks, the Dock of Pensacola Beach Sportsmen and the Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks competing in their feature events after the first rounds of practice for Super Late Model and Pro Late Model teams.
Friday, December 6 presents one of the most dramatic and intense days in short track racing, with Snowball Derby teams competing for a spot in Sunday’s race on Country Pleasin’ Sausage Pole Night. The Modifieds of Mayhem Tour 75-lap season finale follows qualifying.
Saturday is an action-packed day of racing, featuring the Snowball Derby last chance race, the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 for Pro Late Models and a 50-lap feature for the Faith Chapel Outlaws.
Finally, Sunday, December 8 brings the most prestigious event in Super Late Model racing, the Snowball Derby. Pre-race festivities begin at noon, with driver introductions at 1:15 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., the Snowball Derby begins, starting the 300-lap battle to see who will join the record books as a winner of the marquee event.
