The fans in the stands at Lucas Oil Raceway on Sunday afternoon probably didn’t want to see the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour 100 come to an end. All 100 laps were thrilling as multiple drivers battled side-by-side, both for the lead and deeper in the field. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. However, for Jack Smith the fun didn’t stop as he narrowly edged out Tristan Van Wieringen for the win.
Smith started sixth and methodically worked his way forward. He had a great seat for a wild battle for the lead as the top five all were slicing and dicing to try to gain an advantage over the course of the first 40 laps.
Eventually the lead battle started to thin out and only two were left to fight it out. It was Van Wieringen and Smith at the top of the heap.
A caution with seven laps to go set up a showdown to decide the winner. For a few laps after the restart, it appeared as though Smith wouldn’t have enough to get by Van Wieringen.
Van Wieringen had the outside line and was making Smith use the bottom. Smith could get alongside, but couldn’t get the run down the straightaway to make the pass.
Smith finally was able to gain the position with just two laps to go. He cleared Van Wieringen going into turn one and was able to hold him off to take the win.
The win is the second straight for Smith. He won on Labor Day at the Winchester Speedway, but skipped the event at Michigan’s Springport Speedway due to surgery on his wrist.
“Right now I feel like I’m dreaming,” said Smith in victory lane. “I don’t even have words. I can’t explain how good this feels.”
