Kody Swanson wasted no time moving to the top of the scoring pylon at New Smyrna Speedway Friday to kick off the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
The five-time USAC Silver Crown Series champion posted the fastest lap in Pro Late Model final practice, with a lap time of 18.283 seconds around the high-banked half-mile.
Swanson was all smiles following the practice session.
“It’s pretty good, I think,” Swanson told Speed51. “These guys on Team Platinum are working hard, not only to help me adjust to a new type of racing. It’s the first time they’ve been down here with these cars, trying to get sorted out. Everybody is working really hard.
“That Pro car is a really good car. I hope I do my job and do it justice.”
Swanson is particularly excited by the strength of the Pro Late Model car off the Team Platinum trailer. He hopes to be able to compete for wins in that division throughout the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
“The Pro has a really good baseline on that car, and I know the team has been happy with that car for a long time. It seems to be friendly wherever they go. We’ve been working on it, trying to make it better, and keep learning every time I hit the race track. Hopefully, we learn enough to be competitive this week.
“It’s hard to know what to expect, really. I hope to do a good job. If we’re capable of winning the race, I hope I don’t mess it up.”
The learning curve has proved to be slightly steeper for Swanson while piloting the Super Late Model, where he was 14th in Friday’s final practice session. He chalks that up to learning the rhythm of the Super Late Model.
“The Super, we’ve been trying and learning a lot as we go. It’s just a different feeling out of that race car. The horsepower doesn’t bother me any. I’m probably used to that more than the Pro car. I’m just trying to find the balance and find what it needs, and what I need to do with the pedals and timing and rhythm of it. I’m enjoying it, having fun learning. Hopefully we can build on it from here.”
Qualifying for Late Model teams on World Series opening night will begin at 6 p.m. ET, with green flag racing scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET. Race fans can follow Speed51’s Race Day Now for updates by clicking here.
