Silk Pockets $10,000 Icebreaker Victory at Thompson

There’s an old saying in racing: to finish first, you must first finish. The Outlaw Open Modified 125 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park certainly put that saying to the test, as Ron Silk won a thrilling race of attrition to close out the 2021 Icebreaker weekend.

In a race that saw only 13 of the 25 starters reach the finish, survival was key. Many of the field’s top drivers were involved in trouble of some sort, most notably Jon McKennedy and Eric Goodale. Both drivers had fast cars and were leading laps, but when Chris Pasteryak blew an engine in front of them heading into Turn 1, they were just along for the ride.

Silk himself had an eventful race, bouncing back from a penalty and a late spin to score the $10,000 victory in the inaugural Outlaw Open Modified event. His car came alive in the final laps, and when he took the lead on Lap 114, he never looked back.

Yeah, it really worked out perfectly, we got it right at the end. We were free that whole race, and when we took our three tires the car came to us. Just a great job by everyone involved, just really happy. This is my first win with these guys, I’m just pumped to finally get them in Victory Lane. I can’t wait to come back again. – Ron Silk

Keith Rocco, winner of Saturday afternoon’s Sunoco Modified race, was able to keep his momentum strong with a second-place finish. Bobby Santos III, who spun with just 13 laps to go, charged back to third after pitting for right side tires.

Craig Lutz, who challenged for the lead all race long but could never quite get there, came home fourth. Ronnie Williams, driving the fearsome No. 25 Casella Paving car, led a race-high 53 laps, but was only able to manage a fifth-place finish.

The next race for the Outlaw Open Modifieds at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park is Wednesday, June 16th, 2021. Fans will be able to watch every Outlaw Open Modified race live on Speed51.TV this summer.
