Sammy Smith, 14, hailing from Iowa, holding a season of 23 victories, and Rookie of the Year at Elko Speedway, is now joining Nelson Motorsports Late Model Team. Prior to the start of the 2019 season, Sammy Smith had never been behind the wheel of a Late Model, but that doesn’t mean Sammy hasn’t been behind the wheel. Since the age of nine, Sammy has been driving Go Carts, Legends Cars, & now is joining the Late Model track.
“We knew we wanted to race Late Model, and we’ve always known Nelson Motorsports was a solid team,” said Smith. “We reached out to Timothy Peters shortly after. I’m very excited for this opportunity and I want to thank TMC Transportation and Nelson Motorsports for allowing this opportunity to happen.”
“I watched Sammy test drive our car and I was really impressed with how he held himself and handled himself behind the wheel,” said Barry Nelson, owner of Nelson Motorsports. “He’s a good young man, with a LOT of talent, and I believe he’s going to mature a lot with this team. You might even see this young man race on Sundays in the future.”
“From my stand point and everyone else, we’re just really excited to have Smith on our team and to start our six-race schedule with Nelson Motorsports,” said Nelson Motorsports driver Timothy Peters. “We’ve already got one test run under our belt with Smith and we’re all really impressed.”
Sammy will be joining Nelson Motorsports for six races during the 2019 season.
